The West Springfield Rotary Club supports many local, national and international projects that are not instantly obvious to the public. One exception is its' participation in VDOT's Adopt-A-Highway program.
Every two months club members get out early on a Saturday morning and pick up trash along their assigned stretch of road - Rolling Road between Old Keene Mill Road and the Fairfax County Parkway.
Since this is a very heavily traveled road they usually come back with an abundance of "treasure" in addition to the usual collection of bottles, cans, fast food containers and the like. I am extremely … (6 comments)

I suspect many of you are familiar with the work done in your community by the Volunteers of America, a national, non-profit, faith -based organization dedicated to providing a wide array of services to the less fortunate among us. The Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center on Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge is one such facility. This 30-bed shelter has been serving homeless adults and their familiies for more than 17 years. It is transitional and provides both counseling and other support services with the goal of achieving permanent homes for those they serve. My wife and I have been active with Rotary International for many years.
In Karen's case it is the West Springfield Rotary Club.  She was invited to join because of her years of involvement as an effective and community active real estate broker in the Springfield, Virginia area.  These dedicated "West Springfieldites" actively and financially support both local and international projects.
A few weeks ago her photo was snapped in one of their more mundane, albeit important, projects - the club participates in the VDOT Adopt-A-Highway Program.
