It does make sense that how you start your day sets the tone for the rest of the day. So try it; smile early in the morning, laugh early in the day and it helps to make your day stay pleasant.
This can help set the tone for the office also. Have you been at work and watched someone come in who is in a bad mood? Deflates the entire office as everyone tries to avoid them or tip toes around.
