San Antonio has always been a military town. It is steeped in its history. We support our military, honor our military and hated to see any of our bases shut down. The picture above is on Fort Sam Houston and has a historical marker stating "Fort Sam Houston National Landmark Historic District Designated by the United States Department of the Interior Infantry Post 1855-1906" This tradition has gone back for many years. Fort Sam Houston known around here as "Fort Sam" has always been a landmark in the San Antonio area. The U.S. Army has been present in the Alamo City since 1845. In 1876, the Army moved to the present location gradually increasing its size to the 3,000 acres today. It has always been one of the Army's most important commands. For a number of years in the early 1900s it was the largest Army post in all the continental United States. Many distinguished American soldiers have served here, including no less than 13 Army Chiefs of Staff and two United States presidents. Military aviation was born here (2 comments)
