Columbia SC     The latest quarterly South Carolina employment data is a mixture of good news/bad news.  Unfortunately over 71,000 employees were laid off by businesses that could not afford to keep them.  Another 14,000 people lost their jobs due to businesses shutting down completely.  These figures do not take into account the number of out of work independent contractors who are issued a 1099 rather than a W-2.

A Baseball Fan's Analogy of Our Current Economy
According to the National Bureau of Economic Research the current economic expansion turns two years old next month. That's good to know.  Why don't we see it?  This is an attempt at a baseball analogy of our economy, so let's take a look at our roster, starting with the hitters:
Gross Domestic Product--increasing every month
Inventory Levels--improving
Banking--beginning to lend again
Corporate Profits--breaking records
Manufacturing--recent growth spurt
That sounds like a run producing line up.  So why isn't the team winning?  Take a look at the pitching staff:

economy: I Vote For An $825 Billion Bailout For US Taxpayers - 01/23/09 03:26 AM
The House has agreed to an $825 BILLION stimulus package that has numerous and varied trappings and once the monies are disbursed all we can do is sit back and wait to see if it all helps our economy.
I decided to try my hand at using these huge numbers for the purpose of assisting the working citizens of this great country instead of handing it to CEOs who already have shown their track record.

economy: Dillard's And Sears Stores To Close - 10/23/08 12:35 PM
Columbia, SC   The Dillard's department store located in Columbia Place Mall is closing the first week of November and the Sears store at East Pointe Plaza on Garners Ferry Road will close in January 2009.  This is a troubling sign for retailers and a strong statement of the status of our economy.
Sears moved into the building on Garners Ferry in 2005 after Wal Mart vacated and built their new location across the street.  It was plain to see by the parking lot traffic that Sears was not attracting any where near the volume of customers that Wal Mart did.  I had … (0 comments)
