Mortgage Rates Hit Record Lows
Freddie Mac, who started surveying mortgage rates in April 1971, states that thirty-year fixed rate mortgages have reached new all-time lows in six out of the last seven weeks.
According to the survey, interest rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 4.49 percent for the week, down from 5.22 percent a year ago.
The Mortgage Bankers Association said this week that mortgage applications to purchase homes rose last week for a third straight week as rates have dropped. Someone out there is catching on that this is a once in a lifetime deal.

Back in 1969 this neighborhood sprang up on the outer edge of SE Columbia. Berkeley Forest was built in 4 phases if I remember correctly, and all the homes were sprawling solid brick ranches. How about asking Santa to drop a smart washer/dryer combo down your chimney? General Electric announced this week its plans to build millions of "smart" appliances, capable of measuring how much energy they're using and powering down in response to customer or utility commands.
They recently completed a pilot project with Louisville Gas & Electric, and plan to manufacture their line of smart clothes washers and dryers at the Louisville GE plant in 2012. The U.S. Federal Reserve Board announced that household debt had its biggest ever decline in the third quarter, down 2.5% with mortgage debt falling 3.5% and credit card debt falling 3.25%.
It was the fifth consecutive quarterly decline in U.S. household debt, the Fed notes. At the same time, the difference between assets and liabilities, households' net worth, rose 5% to $53.4 trillion, the second consecutive quarter of expansion.
It looks like some stabilization is finally taking hold. The economic picture for 2010 is looking better all the time.

I have not been an advocate of this Federal tax credit because I don't believe in government handouts.....receiving tax dollars for doing nothing. But I'm changing my mind.
After completing a recent short sale with Citi Mortgage I began to examine where all this money was put to good use.

That didn't last long. Bank of America posted a $1 billion third-quarter loss due to delinquent credit card and mortgage payments.
GE reported weaker-than-expected quarterly revenue which was disappointing after such strong reports by some other companies earlier in the week.
Closing at 9,996 is not a bad way to end the week, though. More earnings reports are on tap for next week and any good data should move us back higher. This has been a tremendous rebound from the first week of March when the DOW slipped below 7,000. Hopefully everyone's IRA and 401K holdings are looking much better than … (7 comments)

Columbia SC This past weekend McEntire Joint National Guard Base sponsored an airshow that featured dozens of military planes and ground vehicles and the Golden Knights paratroopers.
About 1,200 men and women train at the base that is the home of the 169th Fighter Wing.
The SC Air National Guard has flown F-16s since 1983, with over 2,600 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Saturday was a beautiful clear sunny day for the event but unfortunately I went on Sunday with a 900' cloud ceiling and the air show was limited.

On March 22, 1786 a bill was approved by the state legislature to create a new state capital. This bill was introduced by Senator John (Gervais Street) Gervais. Washington was requested as the name for the new town, but Columbia won by a vote of 11-7 in the state senate.
Columbia was laid out as a 2 mile square running beside the Congaree River. This square was divided into 400 blocks containing ½ acre lots. All residential lot buyers were required to build a minimum 540 square foot house within 3 years of their purchase.
