antiques: Columbia PA Clock and Watch Museum - 02/12/09 12:23 AM
A most interesting place to visit in Lancaster County, PA is the National Clock and Watch Museum in Columbia.   Run by the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, the museum first opened in 1977 with about 1,000 items, but has expanded to over 12,000 items, from the most intricate pocket watches to magnificent granfather clocks and antique animated clocks.

A separate area features railroad watches from the long history of American railroads.  Other specialized displays feature French clocks, German musical clocks, tower clocks,  and American clocks from 1780 to 1880.  The museum is recognized as the largest collection of … (9 comments)

antiques: Marietta, PA Candlelight Tour of Homes - 12/03/07 06:55 AM
On Sunday, December 2, 2007, the 42nd Annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes took place. All week the Borough of Marietta held its breath for the weather report, which had for the previous four or five days been predicting a wintry mix of snow, sleet, ice and and rain.
The advance purchase tickets were probably not affected too much, but the on-site day of sale tickets definitely were down due to the dreary start of the day's weather.  As it  turned out, the temperature stayed just above freezing all day, so the on-and-off precipation was all rain - which failed to dampen the … (9 comments)

antiques: Eastern Division Toy Train Meet - 10/25/07 02:03 AM
If you are a collector, operator or admirer of toy trains, the biggest network of like-minded enthusiasts is the Train Collectors of America, or TCA.  And for myself and thousands of other toy train fans, the biggest event is the twice-annual TCA Eastern Division Train Meet, held at the York, PA Fairgrounds.
The Eastern Division York Train Meet is considered the Mecca of all train meets.  It's the largest and finest toy train show in the world.
The meet runs Thursday through Sunday every October and April.  It's been running every year since 1954, and every year gets a little larger.  This year … (6 comments)

antiques: Columbia, PA Bridge Bust - 10/08/07 12:49 AM
Columbia, PA Bridge Bust
Saturday, October sixth, a glorious day in the annals of weather history, was the date of the annual Columbia, PA Bridge Bust.

The historic Old Bridge over the Susquehanna River was entirely closed off to traffic between Columbia and Wrightsville.

The bridge, built in 1930 as a memorial to the sons and daughters of Lancaster and York Counties who served in the wars of their country, is a graceful deco art arched concrete structure.

The entire span, over a mile across, was taken over by gaily decorated tents and concessions selling and displaying … (8 comments)

antiques: Autumn's Almost Here! - 09/12/07 01:09 AM
I do like the autumn!  I’ll be happy to see a break in the heat.  I love country drives to areas with colorful fall foliage.  Two events that I like to be able to get to are the Fall Hershey Antique Auto Show and flea market, and the Fall Carlisle Classic Car Corral.  Each of them attracts RVs and people from all over the world.  There are literally thousands of dealers in attendance, selling everything from cars to auto parts to antiques, books, food, antique toys, and flea market items of all kinds.  It’s really a very exciting atmosphere.

antiques: Burning Bridge Antiques Market, Columbia PA - 06/11/07 02:06 PM
Burning Bridge Antiques Market, Columbia PA:
For over 100 years, Herr's Hardware Store stood on the corner of North Third and Walnut Streets in Columbia, PA.  When Herr's closed its doors a few years ago, it was hoped that the whatever new use was found for the building, its unique architectural features would be preserved.

And indeed they have been!  Burning Bridge Antiques Market is one of the finest dealer cooperative antiques markets in Lancaster County.  The ornate pressed tin ceilings have been preserved, as has the original antique elevator that runs from the basement to the second floor.  The … (2 comments)
