1766 Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster, PA
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, located at 31 S. Duke Street, Lancaster, PA, is a beautiful example of 18th century brick Georgian architecture.

The congregation first formed in a small stone church in 1730.  The present church, started in 1761, was completed in 1766.

Trinity Church has one of the most complete archives in the United States.  The archives include church records of marriages, baptisms, and burials.

Records earlier than 1825 are recorded in old German script.  Many have since been translated into English.

lancaster city: Clean-Up at Musser Park, Lancaster PA - 07/17/08 08:17 PM
In May of last year, I wrote an article about the renovations at Musser Park.

The park, located between North Lime, East Chestnut, North Shippen and East Marion Streets in Lancaster, PA had been closed for renovations since the fall of 2006, and was in the process of getting an extensive upgrade.

This year a beautifully improved Musser Park has been open to the public.  Saturday, July 19, 2008, a Neighborhood Clean-Up has been scheduled to take place between 9:00 am and 11:00 am.

If you would like to volunteer a bit of time to help pick up litter (really not … (6 comments)

lancaster city: Thaddeus Stevens - Lydia Hamilton Smith Historic Site, Lancaster PA - 07/02/08 04:15 PM
As the construction of the Lancaster PA Convention Center and Marriott Hotel reaches new heights, several historic buildings around it are being spared.  A $20 Million project is planned to preserve and restore the law offices of Thaddeus Stevens, and the next door home of his housekeeper and business manager, Lydia Hamilton Smith.
Thaddeus Stevens was born in 1792 and died in 1868.  He was a lifelong crusader against slavery, and is considered the driving force behind the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery, and the 14th and 15th Amendments, which granted equal rights, and the right (for all men) to vote.

lancaster city: Historic Lancaster Train Station to be Restored - 06/13/08 05:56 PM
Lancaster's Amtrak Train Station is an architectural gem.  Built in 1929, it is a familiar and dignified landmark in the city of Lancaster, PA.

Its Art Deco marble interior is reminiscent, on a small scale, of Grand Central Station in New York City.  Lancaster is the third busiest train station in Pennsylvania, after Philadelphia and Harrisburg.

The main lobby features a soaring ceiling with art deco lighting fixtures and a magnificent glass paned ceiling insert.

Over the past decade, restoration has been ongoing, including painting and improvements to the heating system.

The building will now be air conditioned.  Shops and … (10 comments)

lancaster city: Six-Pack of My Favorite Blogs - 06/12/08 04:38 PM
It's been a while since I've seen anyone do a "Six-Pack" blog of their favorite posts.  Since I've posted well over 200 blogs, it's hard to pick favorites, but many of my blogs do bring back pleasant memories of the days I visited and photographed them.  These six blogs were picked because they contain some of my favorite photos, taken on beautiful days...

Hospital personnel will soon have an easier time crossing busy North Duke Street to get to Lancaster General Hospital.  Additionally, traffic on North Duke Street will no longer have to be delayed by crossing guards.

A new pedestrian crossing is about to connect the hospital to Lancaster General's new Outpatient Services building, now under construction to the right of his photo, taken on North Duke Street facing south.

The pedestrian crossing will connect two levels of the Outpatient Services building directly to the Hospital, at left, which is itself undergoing major improvements.  The emergency room and main entrance have been moved around the corner … (6 comments)

The construction of the Lancaster, PA Convention Center and Marriott Hotel is really picking up momentum!

The tower emerges from behind the original art nouveau facade of the Watt & Shand building it is preserving.

The front entrance of the Convention Center is taking shape.

One of the new parking garages under construction.

From the side of the historic block, the new tower has reached the 12th floor!  The yellow loader sits where Reifsnyder Pianos once stood.  That building was lost in a fire.  The 200-year-old building to the left will be preserved.

Last Fall, Lancaster City Living was created.  This organization, formed to improve homeownership in the City of Lancaster, is composed of three facets.
First of all, a website was created as a resource for anyone wanting information about the history, cultural opportunities, restaurants, and residences of the city.

lancaster city: Eastern Market in Lancaster, PA - 10/02/07 05:46 PM
Eastern Market in Lancaster, PA
Lancaster, PA has several farmers markets.  The largest and most famous is the Central Market off Penn Square, which has been in operation since the eighteenth century.
A lesser known market is the Eastern Market, located on East King Street near Shippen Street.

Fresh produce and baked goods are as available in the city as they are in more rural areas of Pennylvania.

A beautiful mural frames the Eastern Market.

A hypnotic Caribbean rhythm lends a musical background on a recent Saturday morning.

lancaster city: Demolition Over; Lancaster PA Convention Center Full Steam Ahead - 09/30/07 10:05 AM
The demolition phase has been completed for the Lancaster, PA Convention Center.  The hodge-podge of additions behind the historic Watt & Shand facade, which has been preserved to be included in the new Center, are now nothing but a memory.

The buildings behind and next to the former Watt & Shand department store are gone as well.

The gigantic cranes that have been instrumental in the demolition, are now  lifting huge concrete footers and sections of preformed foundation wall into place.
It's an awesome sight to stand under the cranes and appreciate the gigantic size of this project.

Concrete subcontractors are busy … (6 comments)

lancaster city: Lancaster PA Latino Parade - 09/17/07 10:03 AM
Lancaster PA Latino Parade
The 27th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade was held in Lancaster September fifteenth on a beautiful, cool, sunny Saturday!

The parade started on South Duke Street, turned on Orange Street, then went up Queen Street to end at Binn's Park.

Music filled the air, and a the sidewalks were crowded with celebrants watching the dancers, marchers, and musicians.  It would have been hard not to get caught up in the Latin beat!

The parade theme this year was "Latino Youth: Nuestro Futuro Positivo" (Our Positive Future).

September 7, the first Friday of September, was a perfect late summer evening for a celebration of downtown Lancaster!  Temperatures in the high 70s and a soft, almost imperceptible breeze made for a most pleasant outdoor atmosphere, and Lancastrians took full advantage of the city's First Fridays program.

Cafes on North Queen and North Prince Streets were open for business with tables out by the sidewalks, and people took full advantage of the pleasant weather to have a light repast and watch the passers-by.

Street musicians were out in force, from Caribbean rhythms to folk, jazz and blues guitarists.
