parks: Big Band Blast at Nissley Vineyards, Bainbridge PA - 08/10/09 04:25 PM
The Blue Moon Big Band makes an appearance on the beautiful grounds of the Nissley Vineyards in Bainbridge, PA Sunday evening. Entering the grounds of the vineyard - an eighteenth century stone mill. The original farmhouse of the vineyard. A storage barn on the premises. In spite of rain predicted for the evening, lots of folks bring their picnic tables and chairs in preparation for the concert under the stars. Some regular attendees go all out: tablecloths, gourmet food and even candelabras! The band starts out well protected from

parks: Lancaster PA Buchanan Park Historic Restoration - 07/22/09 03:27 PM
If you've passed Lancaster PA's Buchanan Park, located on Lancaster's West End at Buchanan and Race Avenue, you may have wondered why the small historic building, of almost doll house proportions, is located close to the middle of the park. I had originally guessed that it might have once been a small schoolhouse. In fact, the building is a miniature reproduction of the old Lancaster Courthouse. During World War I, war bonds were sold from this small edifice, at the time located on Penn Square. In recent years, the building has sat unused, its paint peeling and and its cupola leaning unsteadily. Now Lancaster

parks: Lancaster PA Fireworks! - 07/06/09 07:42 PM
Cannons, a marching band and fireworks capped off the Fourth of July weekend in Lancaster, PA this year! Long's Park was the focal point for an estimated 35,000 Lancastrians to celebrate our country's birthday! The festivities were scheduled to officially start at 7:30 pm. Knowing that the crowds would be large, we arrived an hour and a half early - only to be turned away at the lower entrance to the park, which was alread full. We were guided into an upper meadow, where the overflow cars were parked. Those who came too late to park inside Long's

parks: Linear Park, Lititz, PA - 05/16/09 05:35 PM
One of the most pleasant and historic towns in Lancaster County is the borough of Lititz, PA, founded by the Moravians in 1756. Besides the wonderfully preserved architectural heritage and rich history, there are well-tended parks and green areas which add to the quality of life. Linear Park is one such area. Running between Market Street and Brookview Drive, it symbolically connects the historic town with the modern surrounding suburbs. Children have plenty of available activities, while the paved walking trails are ideal for cyclists and joggers. A wide variety of scenery passes by in

parks: Caring Singles Picnic, East Lampeter Township, PA - 07/21/08 05:46 PM
On Saturday, July 19, Caring Singles held its summer picnic. This year we held it at the East Lampeter, PA Township Community Park, a beautiful park located between Routes 30 and 340. The weather was ninety-five degrees and muggy, but we had electric service to our pavillion and several members brought electric fans. Coupled with an occasional breeze and the shade of the pavillion, we were all quite comfortable! Setting up for the picnic. Lots of cold drinks and salads refrigerated in ice chests. Hot dogs starting out on the grill.

parks: Clean-Up at Musser Park, Lancaster PA - 07/17/08 08:17 PM
In May of last year, I wrote an article about the renovations at Musser Park. The park, located between North Lime, East Chestnut, North Shippen and East Marion Streets in Lancaster, PA had been closed for renovations since the fall of 2006, and was in the process of getting an extensive upgrade. This year a beautifully improved Musser Park has been open to the public. Saturday, July 19, 2008, a Neighborhood Clean-Up has been scheduled to take place between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. If you would like to volunteer a bit of time to help pick up litter (really not

parks: East Lampeter Township Community Park - 05/23/08 08:59 AM
Of the many parks in Lancaster County, PA, one of the prettiest but less well known is the East Lampeter Township Community Park. Although the park is located between Route 340 and the outlets area of Route 30, it's off Hobson Road, a country road, and it has a quiet, private atmosphere. There's a well-equipped playground for the kids. There are beautiful picnic groves. A baseball diamonds sits in the middle of the spacious park. Several well-equipped picnic pavillions are available for reservations. All have electric outlets and charcoal grills. The largest pavillion even has a gas

parks: Cherry Blossoms - 05/02/08 04:13 PM
This spring has produced a magnificent crop of cherry blossoms! I have always been fond of cherry blossoms ever since as a small child I played under the canopy of pink trees in front of my parents' home. The problem with cherry blossoms is how fragile they are. They bloom in late April and early May for only a few weeks, and then are blown away by the wind and rain. As I walked in Musser Park in Lancaster, PA today, I saw a beautiful tree with many of its blossoms still intact. The wind and storms of the last few

parks: Breezy View Overlook, Columbia, PA - 11/27/07 07:10 PM
On a windy late November day, I passed over the Chickies Hill between Marietta and Columbia, PA. Shortly before Columbia, I stopped at the Breezy View Overlook. Just off Pennsylvania Route 441, the Overlook offers a spectacular view of the Susquehanna River. "Breezy View" was an understatement on this windy November day - I had to stay away from the edge to make sure the wind wouldn't blow me over the precipice, which is steeper than it looks in the photograph! The Susquehanna Heritage Trail runs along the overlook. A picnic area serves as a pleasant place for a repast in warmer weather. Copyright2007BrianSchulman©

parks: Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia PA - 09/26/07 07:14 AM
Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia PA Located on Chickies Hill between Marietta and Columbia, PA, Chickies Rock County Park offers some of the most spectacular views of the Susquehanna River available anywhere in the Susquehanna Valley. Located off Route 441, the park starts with a parking area. Walking trails meander west toward the river... Although the river can be seen from Columbia, it's farther away from Route 441 than it appears. The hike to the overlooks is a little over a mile, uphill but not too difficult. After you break through the woods, the trail opens wider.

July Fourth at Lititz Springs Park, Lititz PA This year marked the 190th Independence Day celebration at Lititz Springs Park! Events were planned from July First all the way through July Fourth. July 4th started out with a Tang Soo Doo karate demonstration, followed by an accoustic guitar program from Corty and Scott from the Green Onions. A national bell ringing ceremony was followed by Lititz's eighteenth annual baby parade. parks: Lititz Springs Park, Lititz PA - 06/22/07 04:23 PM
Lititz Springs Park, Lititz PA The first Independence Day celebration in Lititz Springs Park was held July Fourth, 1811. Apparently the Moravial board of overseers disapproved of all the merry-making and noise! It wasn't until 1818 that Lititz held another community-wide observance on July Fourth. Since then, there hs been a continuing tradition of patriotic demonstrations at Lititz Springs Park every Independence Day. On July 4, 1843, a feature was started which has become a unique tradition ever since. It was decided to light 400 candles at night, described as a "general illumination of the grounds". At the

parks: Long's Park, Lancaster PA Gets a Makeover - 05/18/07 06:43 PM
Long's Park, Lancaster PA Gets a Makeover Long's Park was created at the beginning of the last century from farmland bequeathed to the city of Lancaster by Judge Henry Long. In recent years there had been some problems with an ever-increasing population of ducks, geese and other water fowl polluting the pond and the surrounding area. Last year a concerted effort to reduce the paddling polluters has made the center of the park much more inviting. This year the park is undergoing an additional makeover, largely due to help from the Sertoma Club of Lancaster. The Sertoma Club, named as an acronym for Service

Musser Park, located between North Lime, East Chestnut, North Shippen and East Marion Streets in Lancaster, has been closed for renovations since November, 2006. The park has been fenced off during the renovation work. The $550,000. project is being financed through a combination of public and private money, with about three quarters of it being funded by the city.
