Dubbed Plantation's green family of 2009, the family of five recycles at every opportunity and also uses solar energy to power their home.
"We recycle everything. As a matter a fact, we don't take out our trash very often. Maybe we take out trash every month, and we're taking out recycling every week," Gabby Koster said.

Teenage explorer program begins in March Teens ages 13 to 18 are invited to join Plantation’s Teen Explorer Program.
The course is open to teens who live, work or attend school in Plantation and have an interest in law enforcement. The free, eight-week course begins March 20.
During the program, participants will be exposed to the workings of the K-9 unit, firearms instruction, explorer program information, crime scene investigation, participating in a DUI scenario, gang awareness and more.

Inocentes is a junior in the Fine Arts program at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek. The 16-year-old student partnered with the nonprofit Music 4 Miracles through her school to teach Leah, who is in the organization's Harmony Hope program.

With Christmas over, Broward County Parks and Recreation is offering a free disposal service for when those trees lose their color and fresh scent.The county's annual Chip-A-Tree service began Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 22 at 14 county parks. Residents can drop off up to two trees, which are ground into mulch for use as landscaping material in the parks. In 2010, the county received more than 9,200 trees, weighing a total of 115 tons. The Margate City Commission will receive commendation from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for passing an ordinance prohibiting devices to train circus animals considered cruel. Within the last few months, animal rights activists protested the Cole Bros. Circus, having picked the show in West Palm Beach and appealing to Margate city officials for a ban.
On Dec. 14, after lobbying from activists, Margate officials banned devices such as electric prods, bull hooks, chains and other devices used by circuses to control animals.
