Last Saturday, Barkland had its grand opening. The park is over two acres in size. There are two separate areas: one for large dogs and another for smaller dogs. There is also a dog washing station, water fountain for both pets and humans, covered pavilions to cool off, walking trails, benches and picnic tables, and dog play equipment that includes tunnels and agility elements.

The Heron Bay Men’s Club will host a candidates’ debate at 7 p.m. on Jan.11 at the Heron Bay Club, “Plaza del Lago,” featuring Stacy Kagan and John Willis who are seeking the vacant District 1 seat. The special election to replace late Commissioner Jay Smith will be held on Jan. 31.

Developers who have land in the Wedge, the 1,900-acres of land that was once in Palm Beach County before a boundary change made it part of Parkland, are now busy either annexing into the city or moving forward with their plans for construction.
At a City Commission meeting, officials approved, on first reading, the master plan for Debuys Property Investment Group's project in the wedge. The project envisages 526 single family homes, 250 multi-family homes, park space and 110,000 square feet of commercial space. Chinese Drywall manufacturer, Knauf and its Chinese affiliate Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin, recently agreed to a settlement that would give cash to help replace the Chinese Drywall in affected homes.

The inaugural Parkland Dash 5K Run and 2 Mile Fun Run / Walk, that was in October and more successful than expected, has left city officials with a happy problem. The event raised $8,443, with 248 people participating. At a recent workshop, city officials discussed whether to use the money to continue funding Family Central and Area on Aging, the two nonprofit organizations that currently receive city grants, or to spread the money around to other groups. The decision to use the money for the city's grant program was made in April this year.
