Today, Saturday, Nov 13, 2010 is day 3 for the 24th annual American Sandsculpting Championship on Fort Myers Beach.  Locals know this event draws huge crowds to our island paradise.  Last year saw over 40,000 visitors stroll the beach in front of the Fort Myers Beach Holiday Inn to see the master and pro-am carvers.  I stopped by this morning to catch the progress of the carvings.  It was a beautiful morning, there were plenty of smiling visitors and the artists were busy demonstrating their considerable talents.  Enjoy !!!

fort myers beach: Got Oil ? Nope ! - 08/07/10 08:37 AM
Got Oil ?  Nope !  We've all seen that great ad campaign by the milk industry with a faceshot of a celeb and milk on the upper lip.  It communicates so much with so few words !  It certainly reminds us to pick up some milk on the way home doesn't it ?  One of my favorites is the Danica Patrick ad.  Great job of combining a very recognizable celeb face and the trademark milk on the upper lip !

So what is my point ?  Easy.  Check out this darling little girl playing along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline on … (13 comments)

fort myers beach: Fort Myers Beach Oil Spill Preparadness - 05/22/10 06:37 AM
This is the most recent NOAA projection for the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  While ocean currents, wind and weather make projecting the future path of the spill a bit tricky the map clearly shows the ever growing mass of the spill.
While Fort Myers Beach seems a long ways away our local response teams have been busy preparing for a problem which may never come.  Federal, state and local agencies are in constant communication.  Emergency supplies, contingency plans and early response orders are in place.

Estero Island, our other name, has grown … (4 comments)

fort myers beach: Wind mitigation insurance savings on Fort Myers Beach - 04/03/10 08:25 AM

Last year I read about a State of Florida sponsored program to encourage homeowners to have their home inspected to determine readiness for a windstorm.  The state would pay certified wind mitigation inspectors to inspect homes and provide a written report of all aspects meeting or exceeding current construction standards relating to wind ratings.  The program recognizes that certain construction techniques and methods make a dwelling better able to withstand the damges incurred during a windstorm.
I was skeptical but the certified inspector was very thorough, explained the program in detail and pointed out some additional things which I could do … (4 comments)

fort myers beach: Fort Myers Beach - Just a quaint little beach town ! - 03/29/10 08:24 AM
Fort Myers Beach used to be home to dusty fishing shanties.  The dirt road along the Gulf of Mexico was subject to being washed out during high tide.  The tourists visiting the area came mostly for the chance to catch fish from the waters off Estero Island.  The name would later be better known as Fort Myers Beach.  The local Indians who shared the island would provide needed supplies when possible.
The fishing shanties would be replaced by larger and more permanent structures as the island became known.  Visitors from Canada and Europe became more common and the permanent island population would … (2 comments)
