central pennsylvania: New Airline Starts Flying From Harrisburg International Airport - 11/21/08 05:58 PM
One of the negatives about living in a smaller market is the lack of transportation opportunities when you just have to get out of town.
The Harrisburg International Airport is a very nice facility converted from the former Olmsted Air Base with a new terminal, very long runways and short security lines. The bad part is that it can be difficult to get anywhere from here.
This week, there were six airlines serving this area; Air Canada (2 flights a day to Toronto), Continental (a few flights to Cleveland and Newark), Delta (to Atlanta and Cincinnati), Northwest (to Detroit and Minneapolis), … (0 comments)

central pennsylvania: Lebanon Bologna, A Uniquely Local Food - 10/19/07 03:01 PM
What is Lebanon Bologna? No it's not the words spoken by local county and city officials.
Lebanon Bologna is, per Wikipedia "a type of semi-dry sausage similar in appearance and texture to salami, although it is somewhat darker colored. Made from salted beef, it has a distinctive smoky taste, owing to the smoking process by which it is cured. It is additionally aged for at least 10 days, which generally overlaps with the smoking."
And it is unique to this area. In fact, there are really only 3 major manufacturers of this product left in business:
Seltzer's is located in my home town of Palmyra, PA. Seltzer's … (2 comments)

central pennsylvania: Antique Auto Show In Hershey Next Week - 10/03/07 05:09 PM
The annual Fall Meet of the Antique Automobile Club of America starts next Wednesday, October 10, here in parking lots of Hershey Park and the Giant Center.
The automobile flea markets and car corrals are open every day at 7AM (thru Saturday) and feature literally thousands of vendors, new & used parts and collector cars on display.
As always, the toughest part of attending a big event here in town is the surface street traffic and the parking. In general, parking for the AACA events is in the grass lots on the north side of Hershey Park Drive and those along Route … (1 comments)

central pennsylvania: Management Shakeup in Hometown Hershey - 10/03/07 01:38 PM
I wrote quite a few blog posts last Winter and Spring about the Hershey Company's decision to cut jobs in the US and Canada in order to move them to Mexico. My articles mostly outlined my view that the company, in spite of the founder's desire to keep Hershey as a thriving community, was tearing apart the basic fabric of town and trampling on Mr. Hershey's Dream. And the object of my scorn was Richard Lenny (who I often refer to as Squiggy's partner in crime) who was the top manager (CEO) at Hershey.
Well, lo and behold, late Monday the Hershey Company … (0 comments)

central pennsylvania: Practice Good Gun Safety in Your Home - 08/08/07 12:29 PM
There has been a very sad storythe past few days of an 11 year old boy who was accidentally shot and killed, evidently by another 11 year old he was visiting.
This accident was 100% preventable... if only the homeowners had kept their guns (mostly hunting rifles) unloaded in a locked gun cabinet.
Hunting is a right of passage in Pennsylvania. Many youngsters learn to hunt and safely use a weapon at a very early age. But parents bear a responsibility to keep their homes safe by using good common sense with weapons.
May God Bless young Taylor Betzel

There are well over 1000 oval track speedways of all shapes  and sizes in the United States. There are more in Pennsylvania than any other state.
The South Central Pennsylvania area has several well run, weekly operations that provide a great deal of  contribution to the local economy. Within an hour or so of Harrisburg we have all of these dirt tracks:
Williams Grove Speedway- Is located about 10 miles south of Harrisburg off US Rte 15 or State Route 74. The track was built in 1939 by the Richwine family who operated the track for many years. The real growth here was when … (0 comments)

central pennsylvania: The Unique Streetlights of Hershey - 04/30/07 08:31 AM
I think everyone just takes municipal lighting of our streets for granted.
In an effort to make Hershey different and bring attention to the main business here in Chocolatetown, the street lights locally take on a whole new look:

Many years ago the street lights were changed to reflectthe look of the wrapped and unwrapped Hershey Kiss.
These extend from the intersection of West Chocolate and US 422to Mansion Road on US 422, the main street in Hershey.
Next time your visit Hershey, be sure to look up at the streetlights.

central pennsylvania: Hershey Job Losses - Part 5 - 04/26/07 02:22 PM
After a week or so the Hershey Company announced a new round of plant closing and job cuts. Chairman and CEO Richard Lenny (that's Lenny, not Squiggy) announced:
Hershey is closing the factory in nearby Reading Pennsylvania which will mean about 250 jobs will be eliminated.
Then this week, they announced a closing of a factory in Naugatuck Connecticut with about another 250 or so job losses.
Both of these plants were part of acquisitions from the 1980's.
So far, by my estimated counts:
Hershey  -- 1250 job cutbacks      Smith Falls Ontario -- 500 job cutbacks      Reading, PA  -- 250 job cutbacks      Naugatuck, CT  -- 250 … (0 comments)

central pennsylvania: You Might Be from Central Pennsylvania If: - 04/15/07 10:11 AM
You might be from Central Pennsylvania if:
Your favorite time of year is Funnel Cake Season
You consider Pittsburgh to be somewhere out west
You go on vacation "Down the Shore"
You can dodge potholes at 55 mph
You know the lyrics to the Chicken Dance song
The first day of deer season is a school holiday
You don't freak out when you see an Amish buggy on the road
They sell ten kinds of pierogies in the local supermarkets
You celebrate Fastnacht Day
You don't even blink when some shoppers are wearing camouflage clothing in the checkout line

central pennsylvania: Our 28th Anniversary Is Tomorrow - 03/27/07 01:58 PM
                             Our 28th Anniversary is Tomorrow
No, not a Wedding Anniversary, the 28th Anniversary of the Nuclear "Accident" at Three Mile Island.
Many of the Active Rain contributors were not even born in 1979 when this "event" occurred and a lot more were still in school way back then. The atmosphere in the Harrisburg area was very tense for a long time even after it was declared "safe" There were lawsuits ongoing for at least 15 years by people who felt their illnesses were caused by the "accident". A percentage of the population just left town and headed west toward Pittsburgh or south toward … (5 comments)

central pennsylvania: Update #3 on Hershey Job Loss - 03/27/07 12:06 PM
Well, they came up with some numbers the last couple of days. The plan is that there will be about 650 manufacturing job cuts spread between the 3 manufacturing plants here in town. Since two of the plants are unionized, there will be voting on Thursday & Friday by the union membership about accepting the company's offer in regards to wages and benefits in exchange for allowing the company to cut the workforce.
The company is putting on the "most losses will be from retirement and normal attrition" spin on the whole process. Most employees are not really confident that it will … (2 comments)

central pennsylvania: More to Rant About - 02/17/07 10:42 AM
After posting yesterday (My Turn to Rant) I was utterly amazed this morning when I left to go to Harrisburg that no additional ice and snow removal had occurred in the area.
And the state still has not opened Interstate 78 or Interstate 81 for traffic. This event ended on Wednesday afternoon. We had our driveway cleared by 5PM on Wednesday. If two senior citizens can clear a double wide driveway by hand, certainly heavy equipment can clear a highway.
And the governor says he's "embarrassed" by the reports. And the reason, the DOT decided to NOT plow on Tuesday evening because the … (0 comments)

central pennsylvania: Layoffs Come to Hershey? - 02/17/07 05:45 AM
On Thursday, the Hershey Company announced they are building a new plant in Mexico and will be closing some US based plants and laying off about 1500 workers. On Friday that changed to possibly 3000 workers.
There has been no formal declaration that any of these will be here locally, but since the "original" plant on East Chocolate Avenue is very old, and the workers are unionized, the local speculation is that many of the layoffs will happen here. Hershey also operates two other plant in town, the Reese's plant on Rte 422 west of downtown and the so called "west" plant … (5 comments)

central pennsylvania: My Turn to Rant - 02/16/07 08:29 AM
One of the real problems with this week's storm has been the inability of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to keep up with keeping the roads open.
Interstate 78, which starts near here in Lebanon County and goes into New York City has been closed since sometime on Wednesday (it's now Friday morning) and Interstate 81, which provides the best alternative has been closed from Pine Grove (just north of the I-78 junction) through to Wilkes-Barre for almost as long.
I understand that the storm was different, with first snow, then rain & sleet, then more snow, and the bottom layer was heavy and … (2 comments)

central pennsylvania: Show the Outdoors - 02/03/07 10:21 AM
The Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show opens today at the State Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg and runs through next Sunday February 11.
The show has been an annual staple to cure the "Winter Blahs" in Central Pennsylvania for longer than I can remember.
Major sponsors include Bass Pro Sports, Yamaha and Chevrolet as all will have large exhibits along with hundreds of additional exhibitors in the fishing, hunting and camping fields.

central pennsylvania: Elvis is coming to Hershey - 01/14/07 07:40 AM
Hershey manufactures a lot of limited edition versions of their standard products for particular markets or events.
In an announcement in today's Harrisburg Patriot-News, they portrayed a limited edition Reese's Elvis bar which will be debuting this summer. It features Elvis' favorite food combination:
                     Peanut Butter and Banana Creme
I looked for a link in the Hershey website or a copy of the photo from the paper, it just isn't available today.
So Elvis fans, be on the lookout for this - You too can eat yourself up to 350 pounds like Elvis did.

central pennsylvania: What's In a Name - 01/12/07 08:45 AM
Does anyone remember the All In The Family episode where Archie was disciplined at work because he sent a shipment to London England instead of London Ontario.
I've often wondered if the similar sounding names around here would cause the same kind of problem.
Middletown,Middleburg
Middletown is a Harrisburg suburb most famous as being the dateline location for TV and newspaper reporters during the Three Mile Island "incident/accident" 30 years ago. It is also the location of the Harrisburg International Airport.
Middleburg is located about 60 miles north of Harrisburg. Best know as being the home city of Middleswarth snacks (potato chips mostly). And the … (3 comments)
