How My Mom Shaped me to be an Excellent REALTOR - 01/29/09 11:37 PM

This ode to my Mom, Helen, is long overdue and having just celebrated her 80th birthday, I feel there is no time like the present.
I took this picture of my mom and dad on their 59th wedding anniversary in August '08.  My dad turned 88 in November and as I already mentioned, mom turned 80 this month.
My mom still dresses hip and "puts on her face EVERYDAY,"  (the putting on the face everyday thing is something that didn't carry over to me).  She is an awesome example, both my parents are, of what it means to love and support … (10 comments)

Shift by Gary Keller, His Tactics are Bringing Results - 01/27/09 03:04 PM
I haven't been blogging much lately. No, I didn't quit real estate. The thought has never occurred to me. When things get tougher, so do I.
What am I doing to deal with the market down turn?
First and foremost I got a black lab puppy, Jack, for Christmas.  I am spending more time walking, enjoying the spectacular scenery in Del Norte County and I'm making it my mission to share what my county has to offer longtime residents and newcomers alike.
Second, I read Gary Keller's new book, Shift.  I have implemented only a few of his suggestions and they … (83 comments)

Fence sitters, your fence post might have broken from under you. If you were waiting for rates to drop to 4.0% or 4.5% because you read it in the paper or heard about it in the news, don't look back wishing. It's still a great time to purchase … (3 comments)

Lake Tolowa State Wildlife Area - Absolutely Breathtaking - 01/19/09 07:24 PM
The Lake Tolowa State Wildlife Area in Crescent City, CA is stunning in it's beauty. The mix of colors, the abundance of wildlife and the nonexistence of anyone else the entire time we were there, made this the perfect place for Jack's (our new puppy)first visit to the ocean.
I have lived in Del Norte County almost 20 years and although I've been to the Kellogg Beach area many, many times, I have never been to this location where Lake Tolowa breaches itself into the ocean.

Over Christmas vacation, Del Norte County had some major storms and Lake Earl and Lake … (5 comments)

Now is the "Perfect Storm" For Buying Real Estate - 01/18/09 10:01 PM
What, now a good time to buy real estate?  We all know prices are going to go lower.
"I'm going to wait FOR THE BOTTOM," you say.
Well, that might not be the most advantageous thing to do and here's why.
First of all, we are all aware that housing prices have declined...a lot, especially in California.
Second, you know that interest rates have hit a 25 year low.
Third, I'm sure you are aware that it's a total buyers market and sellers are HIGHLY MOTIVATED.
We only know that the bottom has hit when prices start to trend back up.
At that point, all … (12 comments)

Mother a Hero, Dies Shielding Her Son in House Fire - 01/16/09 12:35 PM
Victoria Di Silvestro "died a hero," firefighters said Tuesday.
At 5 a.m. Sunday morning a fire broke out in Di Silvestro's apartment, started by a heating pad that was left in the on position on a couch downstairs.
Firefighter's later determined the smoke alarms were not working in the apartment, despite a form signed by the tenant that the alarms were in working order upon her occupancy.  Di Silvestro and her son, Anthony Bookhamer were found in the upstairs of her two-story apartment.
When firefighters found Di Silvestro, age 36, they rolled her over to get her out and discovered her 6 … (3 comments)

Need Buyer's? - 01/13/09 12:15 AM
Need Home Buyer's?
If you are a real estate agent, even if you have 100 listings, YOU NEED BUYER's and if your market is like mine, THERE AREN'T MANY.
So how do you find buyers when business as usual isn't working, when the days of "listings are king" are dead?
If you are reading this post, you are probably internet savvy and doing most of the suggestions I am going to give in this post.  However, if you found this post out of total desperation to learn how to, or why to, tap into the internet, read on.
I have been a … (16 comments)

The State of California in Meltdown? - 01/11/09 11:36 PM
Is the State of California in meltdown?
The State of California will close most state offices on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month beginning in February and continuing through June of 2010 due to a $42 billion budget deficit.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger projects this will save the state approximately $1.3 billion.  Employees of prisons and a few other agencies will be furloughed on a rotating schedule for obvious reasons.
DPA Director David Gilb announced the schedule in a memo to agency secretaries and directors Friday.
Some of the reasoning for closing offices on Fridays: closing entire buildings will save … (9 comments)

Are You For Sale? - 01/11/09 10:15 PM
Do You Know What You Stand For?
How much is your reputation worth?  Is it for sale?  If so, can you put a price on it?  Are you principled enough to keep your integrity for $1000, but would cash it in for ten?
I traveled out of town this weekend and caught up with an acquaintance over a brief meal. I told her how I have a very difficult escrow that has taken a huge amount of energy, caused much grief and frustration and grayed my hair.  The client came to me through a referral from an out of state Remax agent and he … (15 comments)

I'm Being Trained by My Puppy and What I've Learned so Far - 01/09/09 10:42 AM
This is Jack my puppy.  He is 8 weeks old and I have owned him for a little over 2 weeks.  I have never, in 48 years, owned a dog before.  I wish I had taken the plunge into dog ownership earlier, because I'm sure enjoying it now.
My husband, Garry and I, are taking dog ownership extremely seriously, like we do most everything.  We do not want an annoying, out of control dog.
Garry owned dogs when he was growing up, so he has already established himself as pack leader with Jack and they have a wonderful relationship.
I can … (5 comments)

Crescent City/Del Norte County Market Wrap Up for 2008 - 01/02/09 11:19 PM
Crescent City/Del Norte County Market Report for 2008 -
Let's get started.  I'm not going to bore you with December's market report. It was about what you would expect, 11 residential listings sold, median price $144,000 and 36% of the solds were REO's (bank owned or foreclosure properties). December was the third straight month foreclosure sales have increased and I'm sure that trend will continue.
What happened in my market for the year?  Let me point out a few things before I dump my stats on you.  Our MLS posts sold sales in the year they open escrow, therefore, there are some pendings and contingency sales … (4 comments)
