interior decorating: WHITE PLAINS 10601-WHAT A DIFFERENCE A CHANGE OF FABRIC CAN MAKE - 04/02/12 05:06 AM
Other than choosing paint colors, selecting fabrics for upholstered furniture can be a daunting and overwhelming decorating project.  Most people just don't know where to start-particularly when they are working on reupholstering a chair or sofa, because the sky's the limit and shlepping around those those fabric books and handles can get very heavy!
Unless a sofa is extremely well made (as in 8-way hand tied), a valuable antique, or holds some sentimental value, I don't  recommend reuphostering sofas because the cost of labor can really blow your budget.
But when it comes to chairs, now that's a horse house of a … (13 comments)

interior decorating: CHAPPAQUA 10514- THE BEDROOM, YOUR INNER SANCTUM - 01/26/12 02:11 PM
Your bedroom is your inner sanctum, a quiet haven for intimacy and reflection.  Since the bedroom is a private space, it invites both introspection and expression.  Here is where to surround yourself with things you love-color, art, textiles-to begin and end each day by a room that feeds your soul.Perfection should not be a concern here.  This is the space where you can relax and be yourself so forget about any complex arrangements or design by the book.  Start with the basics: comfort, warmth, soft light, and storage.  Dress at a mirror that gives you the best reflection, nestle in a … (15 comments)

interior decorating: Interior Decorating and Design-Using Texture Wisely-Scarsdale 10583 - 01/17/12 07:26 AM
The word texture derives from a Latin word meaning to weave.  Every material or medium has its own essential character.  Fiber and wood are warm and nurturing while glass is clean and utilitarian, providing a platform for color.  Stone is strong and stable, metal cool and decorative while clay is earthy and elemental.  And of course, within each material, there are infinite nuances of texture, from crystal clear glass to pocked and distressed.Rooms and vignettes in your home are compositions where furnishings, artwork and other objects complement and actually converse with each other.  Compelling textural relationships can make the difference between … (8 comments)

interior decorating: ATTENTION! ATTENTION! CALLING ALL FIRST TIME BUYERS - Chappaqua 10514 - 01/08/12 04:01 PM
Attention! Attention! All First Time Buyers
Buying a house and transforming it into a home, is no easy feat.  Especially the first time around. You’ve come from a rental or maybe owned someplace smaller, and while lucky and grateful to be in your new place, OVERWHELMED is also the operative word.
Here are Five tips from a seasoned designer, to make this process a little bit easier:
Color Confusion?  You bought red walls and realize that color is not your cup of tea.  Don’t paint first-That is the last thing you do.  Go rug and carpet shopping and fall in love.  Rugs are … (18 comments)

interior decorating: GREAT INTERIOR DESIGN IS LIKE A GAME OF CHESS-NEW YORK 10020 - 01/05/12 08:17 AM
Chess is an ancient game of strategy and power. It is based on geometrical and mathematical purities, making it one of the most elegant games ever conceived. And yet, it is a contest, and as with any conflict, the battle rages back and forth as two opponents struggle for dominance. This combination of purity and dynamic tension, mixed with a rich and varied history, makes chess a wonderful metaphor for great design and a chess set a personal statement and powerful accessory for the home.
Thirty four of the world’s most famous chess pieces, all part of a hoard unearthed in … (9 comments)

interior decorating: INTERIOR DECORATING-THE YOUNG FAMILY CHALLENGE ON THE UPPER WEST SIDE-10024 - 12/19/11 02:04 PM

It ain’t easy creating a sophisticated look for a kid-friendly living room in an Upper West Side, New York apartment.  Between the basketball hoop and the doll carriages, a sleep sofa, a coffee table, a side table and a few chairs had to work for a young family of four that like to entertain and need to sleep grandparents, visiting from out-of-town.

But we did it!! And while we were limited in our options (NO SHARP EDGES AND VERY DURABLE FABRICS) the tones are cool neutrals with punches of color and the look is fresh and exciting.

interior decorating: REDESIGN-ALMOST FINISHED AT THE BROADLAWN-WHITE PLAINS 10601 - 11/18/11 10:42 AM
The pace of our co-op renovation at The Broadlawn is accelerating.  The new kitchen cabinets have been installed, the bathroom tile is ready for grouting and floors have been laid and sanded and will be stained next week.  The original radiators, sandblasted and acid dipped, will be hooked up on Monday, sans radiator covers,  to give the rooms heat while the polyurethane is drying.  It's all so exciting and even though there is still much to do, the difference between that 70's flowered wallpaper in the kitchen and the dark and drab tile and bathroom fixtures is night and day. The … (4 comments)
