Indian Summer neighborhood, Olympia WA ... A Trails Runs Through It - 11/30/11 11:57 PM
The Chehalis Western Trail is a 22-mile paved trail that runs through the Indian Summer residential neighborhood.  Although the trail is a public trail and part of the Thurston County Parks system, Indian Summer residents can access the trail from the southern part of the neighborhood on Prestwick Lane SE, between the townhomes on Fairway Lane and The Links (the newer development of Indian Summer).
Because the trail was a railroad where the Chehalis Western Railroad operated from 1926 to the mid-1980s, the trail is level and is great for walking, running and bicycling.

Google Chrome saved my 10-year-old laptop from Cyber Heaven on Cyber Monday - 11/28/11 02:50 PM
I know that today is Cyber Monday and I know there are terrific deals to be had especially on new computers BUT before you purchase a new computer, try downloading Google Chrome first.  Google Chrome not only saved my 10-year-old laptop from destruction but also saved me several hundred dollars.   Because of this, I need to sing the praises of Google Chrome and its lightening web browsing speed!
But first, I want to thank ActiveRain for turning me into a geek.  I never was like this before and now here I am all excited about a web browser!  (If I end … (54 comments)

“Is it standard or is it an upgrade?” Buying new construction in Olympia WA - 11/22/11 11:31 AM
When buying new construction in Olympia WA, sometimes the hardest part is figuring out what is NOT included in the purchase price.  Or, in other words, what is considered an upgrade and what is considered standard with the purchase price.
For example, as a buyer of new construction, you may assume that windows screens are included in the sales price.  Sometimes they are not included, and if you want screens, you would have to pay extra for this “upgrade.”   (Yes, keeping flying bugs out of your home is, by some, considered an upgrade.)  But don’t despair if you are buying … (2 comments)

Buying new construction in Olympia WA - get a home inspection! - 11/17/11 05:26 PM
It can’t be said enough but if you are buying new construction in Olympia WA or anywhere in the country, get a home inspection.
A new home is NOT perfect.  Most common issues with new construction are pipes and vents that are not connected.  These things can happen.  It doesn’t mean you have a bad builder or the builder intentionally didn’t connect the pipes.  Sometimes these issues are missed.  Don’t rely on city and county inspectors to discover these things, either – they are human, too.
No matter if you are buying new construction or an existing home, do … (5 comments)

What is a sewer line inspection and do I need this when buying a home in Olympia, WA? - 11/04/11 03:05 PM

I asked George Sharrett of Sound Choice Home Inspections to do a demonstration of how he does a sewer line inspection using a line with a camera at the end to see the inside of the pipe.  In the video, he accessed the sewer line by opening the clean-out pipe, … (2 comments)
