The Geography of Unemployment - Updated for 2010 - 02/25/10 10:30 PM

I posted this a few months ago, but this is the updated version. This is probably the scariest YouTube video you'll ever see.
LaToya Egwuekwe created this map as a graduate student in American University's School of Communication’s interactive journalism program, Egwuekwe created “Geography of a Recession,” a Flash graphic that tracks unemployment rates by county since January 2007. The dramatic graphic is a viral hit, racking up more than 243,000 hits in less than a month on the Internet and 45,000 hits on YouTube in just four days.
Egwuekwe created the graphic for Professor David Johnson’s multimedia class. … (2 comments)

Stop Doing Two Things and Save 12 Hours a Week - 02/25/10 09:54 PM
First, stop doing Open Houses. The way people buy houses has changed. 90% do research first on the Internet and when they are ready to buy they use a real estate agent and see homes through appointments. Your sellers won't mind, if they understand the security risks of opening their homes to the public combined with the low odds that their home will sell this way. Between driving to the listing (30 minutes each way), placing signs and removing them (30 minutes x 2), preparation (60 minutes), and the three hours sitting at the Open House, you've saved 6 hours a … (12 comments)

Think Before You Drip! - 02/20/10 08:32 PM
The other day I received an e-mail from a potential client and one of the first things she wrote was that she didn't want me to use her e-mail address for a drip campaign. She has a junk e-mail address for unimportant e-mails. Ironically, my firm has just revamped their automated drip e-mail campaign and I had just attended a rah-rah rollout session encouraging us to enroll all our clients into the program. Most of the agents in the room thought this was a great idea. Imagine you just put in an e-mail address and you can stay in touch with … (23 comments)

Powerpoint, Google Maps & Localism: What A Useful Combination For Real Estate! - 02/06/10 09:26 PM
Mike Jones has a  Featured post that is worth reblogging.  Google maps are awesome, but being able to make a few changes to them to illustrate a blog post are invaluable.  I can do the same thing in Photoshop, but for those who aren't familiar with Photoshop (kind of a steep learning curve), this is an easier way to do it.
Via Mike Jones (SUNSTREET MORTGAGE, LLC):
I'm always looking for ways to illustrate my topic with visual images.  The reason?  We think visually ~ in images, and an image conveys immediate understanding in a way that words alone cannot.

What to Do When Your Listing is Used in a Craigslist Scam - 02/03/10 10:43 AM
It's happened to others and it recently happened to me with one of my listings. I know that it's hard to believe that people will fill out a rental form and provide someone they've never met with their social security number, bank account numbers, and then send thousands of dollars via Western Union into a foreign bank account and expect that keys will arrive for their new rental which they have never even been inside of, but they do! Here's what I've found out along the way in trying to help the folks who got caught in this scam. First, of … (6 comments)
