Well Spring is certainly here in Arlington VA; in fact you could be excused for making the mistake that we are in early summer with the soaring temperatures the last few days.  All this nice weather has brought the flowers into early bloom in the Arlington neighborhoods and within the next couple of weeks the trees will be plentiful with green leaves.  In turn the grass will grow and with that Arlington homeowners will be breaking out the lawnmower, weather it be gas, electric or a push mower.
I have to admit I am not a big fan of the gas … (3 comments)

green homes: Brompton’s at Cherrydale, Arlington VA, Update. - 03/08/10 11:07 AM
Driving during rush-hour traffic in Northern Virginia is normally is not the most exciting part of my day, but recently when I drove past the Bromptons at Cherrydale in Arlington Virginia, it certainly lifted my spirits and put a smile on my face. Rather than seeing the half finished building, which has become a feature of this Arlington neighborhood and looks like something out of a warzone, I was pleasantly surprised to see that work had resumed.  I am sure most of you are familiar with the story behind this Arlington Condo building, but here is a short recap.  The Bromptons … (0 comments)

green homes: Green Flooring Guide - 02/25/10 09:18 AM
To be defined as “green,” or environmentally friendly, a floor needs to satisfy certain standards. Some of these standards include; sustainability, low VOCs (volatile organic compounds), recycling capability or creation from recycled materials, and carbon footprint. Over the past decade, major advancements have been achieved in creating floors using these standards. This has created a wonderful means of improving the environmental quality in your home, including the improvement of indoor air quality, reducing the depletion of our planet’s natural resources, and reducing the levels of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. Some of the common misconceptions are that "green flooring" is … (3 comments)

green homes: Wind Power to Supply the Whole of the UK. - 01/25/10 07:01 AM
Living in the UK for a large portion of my life I can only but agree when people say that the weather is generally windy and wet. For years I have wished that we could harness the weather and produce a renewable energy form. The population of the UK is around 70 million give or take, that’s a quarter of the population in the US living on an island around the size of Oregon. We use a lot of energy, and have little space to produce it, and trust me solar power is definitely out of the question.
After years of … (3 comments)

green homes: Dual-Flush Toilets Coming to a Restroom near You. - 01/07/10 06:52 AM
Dual-Flush Toilets are not a new idea; the Australians are credited with leading the way in the development of dual flush technology. In 1980 Bruce Thompson of Caroma Industries created the first two-button flushing system, which in 1993 was further developed into what is currently being used today.  During a recent trip to Europe nearly every bathroom I visited featured one. They work on the basis concept that you as the bathroom goers makes the decision on which of the two buttons you push. The smaller button is for water and paper and the larger button for everything else (I think … (5 comments)

When a home buyer or homeowner is looking at design elements to remodel, build or purchase, it is a good idea to understand the way that you live your daily life from the workspace you need in your kitchen, to the layout and design of your living room. Having a better understanding of the "way you live" will give you and your builder/architect/real estate agent a better direction of which to help you create a more livable space and even reconfigure what you already have to make it more efficient for you and your family.

As global warming continues and water levels rise, more and more homes will become displaced, or threaten by water damage due to hurricanes.
