Who needs javascript - 03/22/08 08:01 AM
Something that people might not be aware of is that Javascript is required to run an ASP.net web page.  Without Javascript the ASP.net does not work at all.  Most modern pages are built in either ASP.net (if your a microsoft development shop) or PHP (open source).
All the nice dynamic activities on the web are done through, either Javascript or Flash.  Some people have even started accessing data from the database (indirectly) using Javascript.
This means that browsers that don't allow Javascript to run, are being minimized by my industry, and shunted off to the side.  If you don't allow javascript in your … (2 comments)

Technical Tip - Send to Menu - 03/21/08 10:05 AM
Have you seen the send to menu in XP Pro? This is the right click button that shows you the applications you can use to "Send an Item to". The list is usually "compressed folder (zipped)", "mail recepiant", "desktop",  and "my documents".  But this menu can be changed to include some extra items. This  is how. Go to "Start" then "Run", in the little dialog box type in "sendto" this will open a folder containing the list of "send to" items.  You can add shortcuts to your most used applications to increase your computer use effeciency.
My favorite to add to this … (1 comments)

DNS Look ups - 03/14/08 10:36 PM
Today I had to call my ISP(internet service providers), because they mucked up the DNS (Distinguished Name Service) of my mail server.  I went to whois and reverse IP my mail servers external IP and got a different name.  I was alerted to this problem because my mail was starting to get placed in SPAM traps.
After that sinking feeling of knowing that I had just lost my morning, I decided to make sure that nothing else was stepping on my DNS, could this just be a bad record in another DNS server? I asked myself.
So I opened up the "CMD" window … (3 comments)

WHO IS? - 03/14/08 10:31 PM
A WhoIs lookup is part of any site owners Domain Stategy.  Whois Services are offered by many sites that allow the purchase of Domains.  I buy my Domains from Godaddy (maybe I will blog about why I hate on netsol, but latter for that), but I do all my lookups on www.whois.sc.  There interface is easy, and they have very nice reverse lookup*.

*Reverse lookup becomes important when you are sending out alot of mail.  In order to stay off of the SPAM blacklists and get on ISP whitelists you will need to have the reverse lookup of the IP your are … (2 comments)

The Title Attibute - Why is it Ignored - 03/14/08 07:33 AM
Let me present the humble Title Attribute for your consideration.  This hard working attribute is a member of most HTML nodes, but is hardly used. Its syntax is easy and is very similar to the ALT attribute TITLE="TAG TITLE" and even has important ramification in SEO, but even so it is still mostly forsaken.
Lets take the example of a actual backwards link.  We all want backwards links right?  In the backwards link we have a page with its title element set to KEYWORD.  Now on our Linking page we have KEYWORD in context being used multiple times, we have even Bolded … (0 comments)

(X)HTML - Use a full set of tags - 03/14/08 01:38 AM
I guess I am a little amused by people trying to SEO their sites, with out thinking about the Optimization part of the equation.  They want their page to come up as first in Google, but they don't really think about the rest of it.  All that is fine by me, to me it means that people are finally driven to care about the mess of HTML code that they are leaving behind.
Editors like this one, and Front-Page(the granddaddy of all hateful editors) have been leaving junk codes behind them in volumns (petrabytes per day I am sure), with people happily … (12 comments)

iCalendar - Sending that calendar appointment request - 03/14/08 12:14 AM
iCalendar is a curious little interface.  It looks like something from my old windows 3.11 days, but it may prove to be an interesting addition to my coding tool box.
iCalendar is a text file specification with a MIME-TYPE(I'll talk about them latter, maybe).  It looks so odd because it was built by the lotus notes crew.  Basically it is a text representation of a Outlook Calendar Event.  This means that you can embed a link in a web page using this technology that will download an Outlook Calendar event to the user of your web page.
"You have a confirmed showing appoint?""Click … (0 comments)

Web 2.0 - Did some one say AJAX - 03/14/08 12:06 AM
AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, and what that means is the Javascript on the page calls into a Safe For Scripting DLL (Microsoft XML DLL in IE). A DLL stands for Dynmic Link Library and is a set of code instructions that execute when called.  The DLL makes a request to a web page, it contains a little(mini) web browser that has no GUI, it just opens up a socket call to the web server over the http port and get the response from the web server (usually a text return type).
This means in browser script (running client side) a … (0 comments)

Google? What makes them so great? - 03/13/08 11:55 PM
Did you ever wonder, what is it about the Google model that makes Google seem better then Microsoft, Yahoo or the other technology players.  Anyone can make a spider, and PageRank is not a very complex algorithm, so what gives, why is Google so hyped.
I'll tell you why they have that special glow, they are the only company to Monetize Grid Computing.  What I mean by Grid computing, is sending processing instructions to a whole host of machines and then assembling the output into one final solution.  This is what SETI @ home does, and what the particle collider computers do.  This … (0 comments)

"So you're Serious about SEO." Your web site is your bread and butter, it puts food on the table for your family and your serious about page rank.  You check to see where your site comes in on google and yahoo.  But is there a way to get serious PageRank Metrics without breaking the bank?

SEO - Adding Titles to your page and Page Elements - 03/13/08 07:35 AM
The biggest single SEO Item on any HTML page is the Title element of the page. This looks like <title>Your Page Title</title>.  You should place your desired search strings inside the title.
But there are also Header Elements <h1>Sub Title</h1> that go in the page.  You can use H1,H2,H3,H4,H5,H6. You should put the keywords that are your desired search strings into these elements.
Inside of your paragraphs of supporting text, you should also use the keywords, when you find them, make them bold with the <b> or <strong> or <i> or <em>, for bold, strong, italic or emphasis.
On your images that support your … (4 comments)

SEO -- Page Links - 03/12/08 07:25 PM
A big goal of SEO is to get your own pages to backlink to your websites default page.  Usually the default page is index.htm or default.asp.
You'll have a page pointed back at the root page. Usually you put in something like "home" and link to the "Home Page". Make's perfect sense, right.
But this will not help your page rank at all. You need to decide what search strings that you want to target.  Like "Delaware Homes", then in the page that is pointed at the index make sure that your use the words "Delaware Homes" about six times in the page.  For the … (1 comments)
