Tickets are now on sale for Greenbrier Valley Theatre's (GVT)  Presentation of Leonardo Live

Leonardo daVinci

Nearly 600 years after his death, the brilliance of Leonardo da Vinci continues to captivate people across the world.

Although the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper are perhaps the most recognizable of da Vinci’s works, they are just a small part of his extensive collection.  On February 16, 17 and 18, audiences will have the opportunity to experience the largest collection of da Vinci’s artwork ever assembled as Greenbrier Valley Theatre presents Leonardo Live.

The movie was filmed during the installation of the recent “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter in the Court of Milan” exhibit at the National Gallery in London.  It provides a virtual walk-through of the show, with commentary from scholars and curators.

Dr. George Bent, head of the Art and Art History Department at Washington and Lee University, will speak to the audience prior to the Feb. 17 matinee.

Bent says the exhibition and now the film provide audiences with a tremendous opportunity to experience history through the works of da Vinci and his associates.

“This once-in-a-lifetime collection of the few pictures produced by the enigmatic master has allowed us to see, side-by-side, these images in their proper context,” Bent said.  “In this exhibition, we can see the tastes that drove late 15th Century preferences and the ways in which artists honed their skills and ideas within that cultural milieu.

“It is one of the major art historical events of this young century.”

Although da Vinci was also an incredibly accomplished inventor, scientist and draughtsman, the National Gallery’s display is the first dedicated only to his aims and techniques as a painter.

Featuring the finest paintings and drawings by da Vinci and his followers, the exhibition examines Leonardo’s pursuit in his representation of the human form.

Leonardo Live will be shown at GVT on February 16 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and February 17 at 12 p.m.   Brunch, provided by Stella’s in Lewisburg, will be served prior to the matinee presentation for an additional charge.  Anyone who wishes to purchase brunch is asked to notify GVT in advance.

Tickets available in person, by phone at 304-645-3838 or online at www.gvtheatre.org.

  • $16 for adults
  • $12 for seniors
  • $10 for students and children

The program is also presented with financial assistance from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History and the National Endowment for the Arts, with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts.

The Greenbrier’s Executive Chef Richard Rosendale won the prestigious Bocuse d'Or USA Finals, held January 28-29 at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.

Executive Chef at the Greenbrier wins Bocuse d'Or

Chef Rosendale, a Certified Master Chef (CMC) who has competed in more than 40 international culinary competitions, bested three other finalists: Chef Jeffrey Lizotte (On20, Hartford, CT) who took the silver; Chef William Bradley (Le Cordon Bleu, Cambridge, MA) who took the bronze; and Chef Danny Cerqueda (Carolina Country Club, Raleigh, NC) who placed fourth. Chef Rosendale's winning dishes were a Celebration of River & Glen Hookers Cod and D'Artagnan Winter Chicken Preparations.

Chef Rosendale will now represent the United States at the 2013 Bocuse d'Or in Lyon, France (January 29-30, 2013), where he will be joined by his commis (assistant) Corey Siegel.

Each chef had five-and-a-half hours to prepare two protein platters - one using River & Glen Hookers cod, one using D'Artagnan chicken - each with three intricate garnishes. The platters were presented for judging to select members of the Foundation's Culinary Council, comprised of some of the most respected chefs in America, including: Grant Achatz, Scott Boswell, William Bradley, Michael Cimarusti, Shaun Hergatt, Gabriel Kreuther, Barbara Lynch, George Mendes, Roland Passot, Michael White, and Alan Wong.

With the USA Finals complete, the training for next year's Bocuse d'Or in Lyon now begins. Chef Rosendale will be mentored by the Foundation's Board of Directors, Chefs Daniel Boulud, Thomas Keller, and Jerome Bocuse, and Team USA coaches Chefs Gavin Kaysen (head coach), Grant Achatz and Gabriel Kreuther.

The 2013 Bocuse d'Or, the 26th edition of the competition, will feature competitors from 24 countries.

Myself and many others were upset to learn that Picnik.com was closing.  But HOORAY.... Brad Andersohn, Outreach Manager at Zillow and an ActiveRain member, has provided an alternative to Picnik.  Check out what Brad has to say about iPiccy.com a twin brother to Picnik.... THANK YOU BRAD!

Via Brad Andersohn (Zillow - Outreach Manager):

In a frantic scramble last week to find a replacement for the Picnik.com closure on April 19th, I had written a post featuring 7 different FREE photo and graphic editing sites

However, some many of my online friends were hoping to actually find a replacement editor that was similar or at least closer to the same look and feel of Picnik’s site.  Is there such a site?

Well here it is!  iPiccy.com is the closest you’re going to find to Picnik.com
.  The look and feel are more similar than any other site I’ve seen.  iPiccy might actually be Picnik’s twin brother.  Once you explore the site, you’ll see what I mean.  iPiccy is 100% free, no registration required, and offers many of the same features and benefits that Picnik does and more.

Grabbing any image or photo is easy.
Just click the appropriate button and GO!  The editing options are endless and the ability to create some really cool customized graphics and images will be limited only by your creativity and of course your time and schedule. The workspace on iPiccy will be easy to navigate, especially for Picnik users, and will feel just like your old Picnik stomping grounds.

There are multiple effects with single click options at your fingertips.
These will make your photos and images really “POP” and if you use a combination of the wide variety of tools and options available, the possibilities will be endless.

In literally minutes, you’ll be able to adjust your contrast
, auto-correct colors, customize images, fix blemishes, remove red-eye, lighten and darken graphics, and even add text overlays, reflections, shadows and more.  Having the ability to utilize some really cool effects without being a graphics designer makes iPiccy one of my TOP CHOICE recommendations and a great replacement for Picnik.

Here’s a sample we just put together for a Valentine show promotion:
We added a border,
created a matting,
went with a sepia effect,
added a thick pencil sketching,
made it black and white,
re-sized it keeping constraints,
added a drop shadow border,
dropped some text at the bottom and saved to the desktop.
We then emailed it as a .jpg attachment to the event promoter.
This all took about 3 minutes from beginning to end.

Check out iPiccy.com and compare it to Picnik.  If you’ve never used Picnik.com, then you’ll have discovered a very cool free online photo and image editing site that you’re going to enjoy.  If you have used Picnik, and feel as though you’ll be losing a best friend come April, I can promise that iPiccy will make the hurt a whole lot less.  In fact, I think some of you will like iPiccy better than Picnik.  Happy creating, enjoy~

Grant Sasek writes an enjoyable article about his home state of Montana.  I feel the same way about my state. Check out Grant's blog as he is new to Active Rain and leave him a comment. Thanks,

Via Grant Sasek (Real Estate Pipeline):

montana, winter, house, home, real estate, agents, brokersI live in Montana. It is February. The pale light of the short days of winter, temperatures below freezing and snow crusted with frost define my part of the world. That won't change anytime soon.

I sit in the office, considering where to call. Enough buyers come into our service that almost anywhere in North America is an option. So I look for leads in Florida, southern California, maybe South Carolina and Arizona. I pull up websites of faraway agents featuring patios and pools, green grass and best of all, beaches and oceans.

For the next eight hours, I live vicariously through the websites of others.

I ask an agent outside San Diego how warm it is as we speak. Then I laugh and add "You win."  I talk with an agent in Punta Gorda sitting in an open air restaurant. I speak with another Florida agent who promises to call back after an afternoon round of golf. Yet another trys to decide how best to feature a home's lush landscaping.

But I am in Montana and it is February. After enough, I put on my vest, then my coat, I slip on my gloves and hat and begin the careful walk home on icy sidewalks. I pass the blocks thinking about the choices we make - and the ones we don't.

Can a person really buy a small condo within walking distance of the beach for $60,000? Why don't we all live in Florida?

As soon as I ask the question, I know the answer. Once, I lived on a Caribbean island where bars and restaurants are on beaches, days are always warm and Christmas is celebrated in shorts. But there, Christmas presents were delivered by a postman rather than by a loved one. So, on an earlier February, I left the island and returned to Montana. And here I have been ever since.

For better or worse, Montana is home. Almost always has been, probably always will be. Even when I lived elsewhere, I knew where home was waiting.

Here, for me, memories are as long as the shadows, history becomes personal, relationships are old. I am here for the same reason many of us are where we find ourselves. It is about "being home."

It is a distinction real estate agents deal with daily - that difference between house and home.

We live in a mobile society, people moving across the country and around the world. Sometimes they seek a house, a place to stop, rest and find shelter until moving again. house, home, montana, winter, real estate

Others want a home, a place children and trees have time to grow, a place where both can grow roots and become attached to the particular ground under them.

I continue my walk, pull the coat a bit tighter.

I think that if I ever buy a house, it will be within walking distance of a beach. But, when the time comes to buy a home, it will be here, in Montana, where light grows short and temperatures fall.

And despite my winter whine, that is just fine with me.

Almost Heaven Habitat For Humanity Breaks Ground for the new Earth Day Build House and Celebrates Nissan’s Partnership

On Friday, February 1, 2012, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity broke ground on a new house in partnership with Colette Godfrey and her family.

Joining in the celebration were over 30 Habitat for Humanity volunteers and supporters from the community and around the state.

Colette Godfrey was born and raised in Greenbrier County and works at a convenience store as a cashier. She is the mother of three children: two grown children and an 8-year-old son, Deshaunte. A few years ago, they had to move out of their home due to circumstances beyond their control. She couldn’t afford to rent a new place, so they had to move in with her sister in a small 2-bedroom apartment in which Colette and Deshaunte share a bedroom.

“You hear, see and read about people being homeless, and during those times you never ever think you would be in that position. This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to go through and to see how it affected my son is even worse,” confessed Colette. “Now I have true hope for a brighter future for me and my family. It is wonderful to break ground on my new home!”

The event kicked off Almost Heaven Habitat’s Earth Day Build, with construction of the home scheduled to be completed in time for a dedication the week of April 23rd, in celebration of Earth Day.  A major sponsor of the house is Nissan, who provided grant funding towards the construction of the new home, as well as the means for Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity to purchase a new vehicle from a dealership.  Almost Heaven HFH selected Lewis Automotive, located in Beckley, WV, as their partner dealership, and Sarah Abrams of Lewis Automotive was on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony.

Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity Groundbreaking

In the ground breaking line up from left to right:  Donna DeHart, Development Director of HFHWV;
Sarah Abrams, PR Manager at Lewis Automotive; Llodyd Haynes, Mayor of White Sulphur Spirings;
Colette Godfrey and her son Deshaunte future Habitat Homeowners;  Katie Ickles, Executive Director Greenbrier County Chamber of Commerce; and  Michelle L. Connor, CEO of Almost Heaven H4H.

“Nissan Foundation has a history of supporting Habitat for Humanity, as well as green and environmentally-friendly initiatives. Our Nissan dealership, Lewis Automotive, is no exception. “This will be our first Habitat for Humanity build, and we are very excited about the opportunity to frame the interior walls for this house in the coming weeks,” reported Sarah Abrams, who serves as Public Relations Manager in her family’s 4th-generation dealership.

This past fall, Nissan Americas announced a significant expansion of its longstanding partnership with Habitat for Humanity International with a $2.5 million donation. Nissan’s vision is to invite all its stakeholders to participate in the partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Point-of-sale materials in dealerships and communications to consumers will convey information about Habitat activities. Consumers who visit the Nissanusa.com website can click through to Habitat’s site to make a donation or find volunteer opportunities across the country.

Nissan is funding grants and providing Nissan vehicles to 10 Habitat affiliates that make commitments to sustainable construction practices; Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity is one of those 10 affiliates selected to receive a grant and a vehicle to support its operations.

“Nissan’s financial support enables us to help serve the Godfrey family, and we are extremely grateful to have a partner like Nissan that shares our commitment to building sustainable communities,” said Michelle Connor, CEO of the Almost Heaven Habitat affiliate that serves Greenbrier, Pendleton, and Pocahontas Counties.

Throughout this partnership Nissan and Habitat for Humanity will share a common goal: to build affordable, sustainable homes in partnership with families in need of decent housing.

Nissan-sponsored Habitat homes will be equipped with many “green living” features, including low-flowing plumbing fixtures, programmable thermostats, energy-efficient fluorescent lighting, high-performance windows and ENERGY STAR® appliances. These eco-friendly amenities align with Nissan’s Green Program, which supports efforts to reduce the Habitat for Humanity’s Earth Day House.

Wordles ... is something new I learned about today. Gary Coles provides a basic and easy tutorial on this software tool... Check it out and watch for more of Gary's tutorials.

Via Gary Coles Latin America Real Estate (Venture Realty International):

I just had a featured post (What is the Last Thing You Taught Someone?) and I promised to write two more posts.  Here is the first one.  It is a basic tutorial on Wordles.  Wordles are "word clouds" that are created from text or from the text on a web-page.  The images can be modified with different colors, shapes and fonts.  They are fun and can be used in your posts or printed materials.  You can create your own Wordles at Wordle.net.

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

Here is a basic Wordle made from the ActiveRain home page:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

In this image, I changed the colors using the drop down color button,  I selected the custom pallet and used colors similar to the ones in ActiveRain:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

I used the Layout button and changed the Layout:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

This time I changed the font using the menu from the Font Button:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

I used the color button to get a totally different look:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

I went back to create a Wordle and inserted a block of copy (Latin America paradise4gringos.com Gary Coles real estate  My specialty is referrals to Latin America  If you have a referral for Latin America I would love to help find them a home for retirement or investment.).  If you notice the two-word phrases are separated:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

This time I keep the two-word phrases together by replacing the space between words with a tilde character "~"  (Latin~America paradise4gringos.com Gary~Coles real estate  My specialty is referrals to Latin~America  If you have a referral for Latin~America I would love to help find them a home for retirement or investment.) Now those words and names stay together.  This will work for longer phrases too.

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

The size of words is determined by how many times they show up in your text. You can add the words over and over several times to get them to be larger. I added the word "big" and typed it three times to get it to show as large as anything in the image:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

This time I deleted the word "big" by right clicking on it and then clicking on the remove button:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

To save an image the easiest way is to use your print screen feature (Shift and PrintScreen in Windows).  Here is the screen shot:

Wordle by Gary Coles - Paradise4Gringos.com

Now I crop the screen shot and have my Wordle all ready to use or I can then add text, rotate and do other things to the image depending on my software for working with photos.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial on Wordles.  Have fun with them.

The deadline for all agents interested in advertising in the first issue of the WV Real Estate Guide is February 15th (all contracts and payments needed).  If you are not already in the first issue and would like to be, please contact Chris with CNS Designs at (843) 864-3193 and he will be happy to help you get your ad in th first issue.

On March 1, look for the WV Real Estate Guide, a new magazine providing resource for  everything Real Estate (Property Listings, Mortgage loans and Home Owners Insurance) in Greenbrier County.
