Greenbrier Valley Theatre presents the original musical, The Greenbrier Ghost, a true story!

In celebration of both West Virginia’s 150th anniversary as well as the history of Greenbrier County, the Greenbrier Valley Theatre will present the original musical,The Greenbrier Ghost.

The Greenbrier Ghost tells the strange but seemingly true local legend of Zona Heaster Shue, a young woman who grew up in the Richlands area of Greenbrier County who was murdered in 1897. While her death was at first attributed to an “everlasting faint” by area physician, Dr. George Knapp, this diagnosis didn’t set well with everyone, especially the girl’s family.

Within a month of her burial on Little Sewell Mountain, the girl’s mother began claiming that Zona had come back from the grave to appear to her in a series of dreams. The message from beyond was that Zona had been murdered by her husband of three months, Erasmus Trout Shue. That may sound strange enough, but this ghostly testimony eventually changed enough minds in the area that it led to Zona’s body being exhumed and her death ruled a murder upon reexamination.

More disturbing facts about Trout Shue’s past soon emerged, including two previous wives, one of whom died under questionable circumstances. However the fact that Zona’s ghostly testimony was admitted in the eventual trial of Trout Shue and that it, along with physical evidence, helped lead to his conviction was an unprecedented legal maneuver both then and now.

Though the events of the story took place over a century ago, the legend of the Greenbrier Ghost remains a well-known story in the county. A number of books have been written on the topic, such as The Man Who Wanted Seven Wives, by Katie Letcher Lyle. GVT first staged a non-musical version of the story, simply called Zona, in 1998. The musical, developed by Cathey Sawyer and Joe Buttram, received its first production in 2003 and was subsequently produced in 2004 and 2009.

Sawyer says that when writing the book of the musical, she tried to base the details on actual coverage of the case as published by the classic area newspaper The Greenbrier Independent (1859-1980). “I tried not to read Katy Letcher Lyle’s book until I’d already written [the musical],” Sawyer says. To fill in other details of life in 1897 that were not covered in the original reporting, Sawyer says she studied the types of gatherings that would have been common in order to give setting to the first meeting of Trout Shue and Zona Heaster. She also looked for details in everything from the heated political race of 1897, to the kinds of crops people were planting then, to etiquette books, to common phrases of the day. “Most of the references to the politics of the period are pretty accurate,” Sawyer says.

The story will be told by a cast of over 25 local and professional actors, two of whom have deep ties to the story itself. Alana Preston is the great great granddaughter of John Alfred Preston, the original prosecuting attorney in the trial of Trout Shue. And cast member Vivian Gibson is a great niece of Trout Shue himself. Both are veterans of the musical, with Preston having appeared in all previous productions.

“I think it helps to know that it’s a true story and that it’s an important Greenbrier County story,” Sawyer says.

The show will run May 24-25, 30-31, and June 1, 12, 14, 19, 26-29 at 7:30 p.m. There will be matinee performances June 1 and June 29, at 2:00 p.m.

$21 for seniors, and

$15 for students and children.

A Pay-What-You-Can preview performance will be held at GVT on May 23 at 7:30 p.m. and at Greenbrier West High School on May 28 at 6:00 p.m.

What does West Virginia and Sesquicentennial have in common?

Sesquicentennial means a 150th anniversary or its celebration. And, on June 20th, West Virginia celebrates its 150th Birthday! In 1863 West Virginia became America’s 35th state. Join the celebration, June 20 – 23, 2013.

The celebration, organized by the West Virginia Sesquicentennial Commission, will take place at the State Capitol Complex beginning on the state’s official birthday, Thursday, June 20, and concluding Sunday, June 23.

The events at the State Capitol will be something you won’t want to miss.

The birthday celebration will kick-off with a statewide bell ringing on Thursday, June 20 at 1:50 p.m. by Governor Tomblin. That evening, an outdoor symphony concert will be held on the Capitol lawn. Following the concert, West Virginia history will be brought to life in a special three-dimensional film that will be projected directly onto the face of the State Capitol building. The video will conclude with a Zambelli fireworks show launched from the roof of the Capitol.

The celebration will continue throughout the weekend. Saturday morning, the Commission will partner with FestivALL to host a parade which will end the at State Capitol where a day-long festival complete with family friendly events will continue into the evening. The celebration will be spread across the Capitol Grounds and will include outdoor concerts, a vintage car show, the Smoke on the Water Chili Cook-Off, elements of the Vandalia Gathering, history lectures, Civil War re-enactors, sternwheeler rides, West Virginia food and craft vendors, and a giant birthday cake for all to enjoy. Saturday evening, the Capitol building will come to life with another showing of the 3-D film followed by another huge Zambelli fireworks show.

The West Virginia Sesquicentennial Commission is offering limited edition silver coins as part of the state's 150th birthday celebration. The coins are $49.99 and can be found at the Sesquicentennial Commission's online store. Only 1,863 of the coins have been minted, denoting the year the state was born. The coin features the West Virginia 150 logo on one side and a three-dimensional engraving of the Great Seal of West Virginia on the other. The coin will also be available at the state's official 150th birthday celebration at the State Capitol next month.

On A Rainy Summer Day In Prince William County Vist The US Marines

Opened symbolically on November 10, 2006. The National Museum Of The Marine Corps currently houses artifacts portraying the history of the US Marines from November 10, 1775 to the present day. The museum is a 120,000 square foot state-of-the-art interactive building that captivates visitors. Quantico Marines served as models for the mannequins plus full scale equipment is used in the displays. It is rapidly becoming one of the premier visitor destinations in Prince William County and Northern Virginia.

Over the past year my husband and I have made numerous trips to the National Museum Of The Marine Corps with our camera. The Studio Shows accentuate what the potter, Jeff Diehl has been working on, as well as, providing a glimpse of what goes into producing the work. Typically, Jeff has an off the “wheel” activity for customers to participate in, be it glazing a vase and watching it being fired in a raku kiln, throwing on a treadle wheel, making bricks, or competing in an unconventional contest for a pottery prize. Customers are refreshed with an array of Donna Diehl’s delicious cuisine highlighted by Jeff’s trays, chip and dips, and bowls. The shows are a pleasurable experience for all.

Prompted to contact new members by the Active Rain Newbie Outreach Challenge, I had the pleasure of connecting with Harley Harrington.

I would like to introduce Harley Harrington to Active Rain. Harley is a software developer who has thirty years experience in the computer programming field.

Harley has recently written a program that creates interactive floor plans for builders and Realtors. I have checked out his web site for Plan Gator and it is extremely impressive. The site walks you through homes where you can click in various sections of a room to see a photograph of the view from that angle. Another feature allows you to add windows, doors, bump outs, additions, etc. and see how they would look added on to the current floor plan. The software is really top notch!

Harley lives in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. On a personal note, he loves computer programming and software design and enjoys creating computer programs as a hobby a well as for his career. When not working with computers, Harley enjoys boating and fishing. He particularly enjoys fishing for salmon and trout on Lake Michigan.

The 26th Ronceverte River Festival, a three-day event!

The 26th Ronceverte River Festival starts Friday, June 7th and goes until Saturday, June 9th. The river festival offers parades, vendors, rides, free concerts at the amphitheater, and fireworks. The three-day event includes the famous Rubber Duck Race on the Greenbrier River.

If you've never attended the Ronceverte River Festival, you are missing out on a fun-filled exciting weekend. This three-day festival is fun for the entire family. The event is held at the Ronceverte Island Park, a 20-acre park located on the Greenbrier River. Admission and parking is free.

These young girls are growing and learning....watch them ROAR!

Forty-seven volunteers arrived on May 11, 2013, for the Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity construction site in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 3-12. Over half of the volunteers were 18 years of age, and younger.

As one volunteer said... "No one should underestimate the abilities of a woman- she can run a home, raise a family, and have a career. A woman can truly do it all!” These volunteers will be women one day..... Like the song by Helen Reddy ..."I AM WOMAN...HEAR ME ROAR .... just says it all!

It was indeed a challenging and fun day for all volunteers... of all ages! The young girls jumped right into the work.... painting and installing trim/baseboard.

This was a great chance for these young girls to give something back to the Greenbrier community. They are growing and learning....watch them ROAR!

Young Volunteers Working at Habitat for Humanity’s 2013 National Women Build Week

On May 11, 2013, over 40 women including Lowe’s Heroes and Joan Reed, Executive Director of the Sheppard Center of Lewisburg, WV, volunteered on an Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity construction site in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 4-12. Now in its sixth year, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing in their local communities.

The 47 volunteers worked on installing the trim/baseboard on one house and painted the interior on a second house at the Summer Elms Development, White Sulphur Springs, WV. The Greembrier Drum Line from the Greenbrier Academy for Girls, ages 16-18, volunteered their time, as well as, entertained volunteers just before lunch. Local volunteers and Lowe’s heroes also volunteered.

Additionally, Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity had 18 volunteers, 3 of which were mother/daughter volunteers in Franklin, WV and they painted the exterior of a house.

In Durbin, WV there were 11 volunteers that built interior walls for a house that will be built this summer

“It was an honor to take part in today’s event. It was so gratifying to witness such cooperation, talent and energy from such a diverse group.” said Joan Reed, Executive Director of the Sheppard Center of Lewisburg, WV.

Courtney Hartman a volunteer said “Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers both male and female of all skill levels. No one should underestimate the abilities of a woman- she can run a home, raise a family, and have a career. A woman can truly do it all!”

Lowe’s donated a $5,000 store gift card to Almost Heaven Habitat and $1.75 million to the 2013 National Women Build Week to support 300 participating affiliates. National Women Build Week is one of the major initiatives supported through Lowe’s five-year, $20 million pledge to Habitat. As the underwriter of the Women Build program since 2004, Lowe’s conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach women construction skills and provides the support of Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers to build homes with partner families across the country.

"Lowe's has underwritten Habitat’s Women Build program since 2004, and we are proud to continue to bring together women from all walks of life to raise walls alongside local families in need," said Marshall Croom, chairman of the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. "We thank our Lowe's Heroes and the thousands of volunteers who will help strengthen communities throughout the country this week."

The U.S. Census Bureau reports more than 16 million children are living in poverty in the United States. Nearly 48 percent of the children reside with women heads-of-household. In Eastern West Virginia, more than 17.2% of families are in need of affordable housing. Habitat’s Women Build program recruits, educates and inspires women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable homes in their communities.

Since Habitat’s Women Build Program was created in 1998, more than 2,100 Habitat for Humanity Women Build houses have been constructed in partnership with low-income families. Nearly 41,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in the five previous events.

Bring the kids, Volunteer or join the CISGC’s Fruity 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Fun Course

Communities in Schools of Greenbrier County (CISGC) is having their Fruity 5K Run/Walk and Kids' Fun Course on Saturday, June 1st and are looking for volunteers!

To encourage active, healthy lifestyles for our youth, participation in the Fruity 5K is free to youth (under age 18) and the Kids' Fun Course is open, and free, for kids age 4 to 10.

Adult registrations for the 5K are $20 and $25 day-of-race. This unique, fun event will celebrate participants progress with "color toss" stations along the 5K course and Kids' Fun Course.

What is The Fruity 5K Run/Walk?

No matter your age or fitness level the Fruity 5K Run/Walk is for you! The goal of the Fruity 5K Run/Walk is to celebrate each kilometer with a dose of color. In the end, your badge of honor will be the colors you’re wearing!

The course is a combination of inclines that challenge you and declines that reward you.

CISGC has had a great response for the race so far and are looking for extra hands to help out with this fun event. Volunteers will toss color at participants along the 5K course and Kids' Fun Course, work as timers for the event, help with registration, or the kids' activity area before the 5K! Volunteers should plan on arriving at 8:00 and staying until 11:30 on Saturday morning.

The Fruity 5K Run/Walk will be in downtown Lewisburg at start behind the New River Community & Technical College (starts at 9:00) and the Kids' Course will follow on the lawn (starts at 10:00). Volunteers should plan on attending from 8:00 - 11:30.

Mission BBQ in Nottingham, MD sponsored a "Lunch with the Heroes" today on Armed Forces Day in association with the Wounded Warrior Project™.

My family was grateful for the invite and honored to attend. This was a first for us, we are still getting used to saying (family of a ) Wounded Warrior.

Mission BBQ is a one-of-kind BBQ. The National Anthem is played at noon every single day and its decoration leave no doubt, Mission BBQ is proudly serving those who serve!

But they do much more than show patriotism and display their support for the troops. Mission BBQ is on a serious (and very successful) mission to raise awareness for the invisibly wounded by supporting wonderful organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project™. During the "Lunch with the Heroes" today, Mission BBQ presented a check over $20,000 to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Wounded Warrior Project's mission is "to honor and empower wounded warriors" through a variety of programs that "nurture the mind and the body". Support is extended to families of wounded warriors - many of whom have taken on the role of caregivers - as well.

We enjoyed our lunch at Mission BBQ immensely. We got a much needed break and some time to enjoy as a family, everyone was very welcoming and we could feel the support... and, oh yes, the food is home-made and was great, too!

Swans wanting to be noticed...

We were at the Greenbrier Sporting Club visiting friends and driving by the river I see these two swans. Of course, I had to take some photos.

I start taking some pictures and the swans noticed me and

started coming toward me.

They come on the grass and start talking to each other... probably about me!

Then they started moving as if they were dancing...

it was indeed the funniest thing I've seen.

These swans were definitely showing off in front of the camera. When I was leaving, they were still moving and dancing..just having a great time!

Rhododendron in bloom

Last week there wasn't a bloom on this Rhododendron bush... With having frost on Monday and Tuesday ...I wasn't expecting to see any blooms... and yesterday with the temps in the 80s we are now starting to get these beautiful flowers. Driving into the garage I just happened to notice the blooms and grabbed my phone and captured some photos.

Rhododendrons in bloom...Looks like Spring is here and summer is on its way....

OH happy days!

Alderson's First BridgeFest Celebration

The first Alderson BridgeFest Celebration, coordinated by Friends of the Lower Greenbrier River (FOLGR), will be held in downtown Alderson, WV, on May 18. Festivities include river activities, representatives from environmental organizations, Spring Fling hosted by the Methodist Church, food, live music, and much more!

Come on out and join in on celebrating the Greenbrier River. Paddlers are welcomed. This family fun day starts at 8:30 AM with the opening of the Alderson Community Market at the Greenbrier River Interpretive Center (GRIC).

This first BridgeFest event features a variety of events on and around the Greenbrier River.

Exhibitors will be located on the old pedestrian bridge.
Stuart’s Hot Dawgs will be selling barbecue.
A cardboard boat competition, open to all ages and groups will be held at the Alderson Mini-Park at 10 AM.
Paddlers are invited to meet at the mini-park at 1:00 PM for a fun afternoon trip down the Greenbrier.
FOLGR will provide information about the Greenbrier Geocache Trail, educational programs and water conservation at its information booth on the bridge, as well as selling shirts and hats for a donation.
The Alderson Main Street will be staffing the GRIC and introducing a new kiosk with an interactive touch-screen computer presenting history of Wolf Creek/Smith Mountain. This easy to use format will enchant computer challenged adults and be a breeze for youngsters to operate.

This fun filled event will include river activities and booths on the old bridge and around the river. BridgeFest runs from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 18... come join in the fun!

The Alderson Memorial Pedestrian Bridge, built in 1913 is on the National Register of Historic Places. The concrete arch bridge linking two counties (Greenbrier and Monroe) and one town together offers gorgeous views up and down the Greenbrier River. This concert, featuring the Possum Holler Glee Club, is a fundraiser for Brady Mickey, a young man fighting Cancer.

Date: Saturday, June 8, 2013

In mid-February 2013, Brady, age 13, started to get sick to his stomach, was taken to the hospital thinking he had a stomach bug. Since he was not getting better, on March 12th Brady and his family travelled to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and has begun a six-month series of chemotherapy treatments.

If you can not make the concert and/or want to donate, please go to the Online donations for Brady Mickey.

Besides the sounds of Possum Holler Glee Club, enjoy food by the chefs at the Greenbrier Sporting Club in addition to a silent auction and cash bar.

All proceeds from the concert go to benefit the Mickey Family to assist with Brady's cancer care at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Tickets are available for $15 at the door. The goal is to raise $10,000.

Do you remember your first time..... when you hooked, cast the line and caught your very first fish. Then help make lasting memories for your kids and bring them to the Annual Fishing Derby at the National Fish Hatchery on May 25.

Registration starts at 8:00 am... fishing until 1:00 pm.

In past years, visitors from across the state of West Virginia and other places like Virginia Beach, VA; Winston-Salem, NC and Brooklyn, NY flocked to the White Sulphur Springs National Fish Hatchery for the Annual Fishing Derby.

Co-hosted by the hatchery and the White Sulphur Springs Rotary Club, the derby is a chance for children and their families to rustle up some of the biggest fish the hatchery has to offer. Nearly 200 children (ages 1-14) attended last year.

It’s these special moments, catching your first fish with family and friends that provide children with lasting memories and a deep connection with great outdoors. Connecting children to nature is one of the hatchery’s top priorities because a kid that plays outside is a healthy kid. Research shows that kids that play outside on a regular basis are less likely to have weight problems, diabetes and symptoms of ADD and ADHD.

The National Fish Hatchery is located in White Sulphur Springs, WV on Route 60 East.

Tomorrow is Mother's Day. A day we remember our beloved mothers.

I remember every Mother's Day, our entire family would be home and attending the family church. Now since there were 11 children, some with spouses and children, the Vasvary family would take up quite a few church pews on Mother's Day. Mother loved this day as she new all her family would be together at church and afterwards a family dinner.

The last time that the entire family attended church together was Mother's Day. My mother was dying, she had pancreatic cancer and nothing would keep her from going to church. She died September 2, 1967, at the young age of 53 years. She was a remarkable woman and mother.

Her memory lives on with her ten surviving children. Although it has been 46 years, I think of my Mother every day. She was a VERY SPECIAL LADY!

To ALL THE MOTHERS...a bouquet of flowers is being sent your way...

LITTLE SPARROW: The duo Little Sparrow is known for close vocal harmonies and detailed treatment of traditional Appalachian and Celtic songs, as well as finely crafted original material. Both musicians have performed seperately for years and are delighted to combine their talents in creating music full of heart, soul, humor and spunk. A down home stage presence makes their show feel like a front porch summer evening with friends.

MARY HURST: Mary Hurst’s goals as an oil painter are to portray the unseen spirit she perceives around and within us, and to invite the viewer in for a closer look. From botanical forms and forest scenes, to abstractions of the human figure and animals, her works possess a vulnerable quality that is balanced by her boldness and skill as a painter. Mary is currently living in Lewisburg, and enjoying working out of her Church Street studio.

The Wings of Fancy Live Butterfly and Caterpillar Exhibit at Brookside gardens is now open for the season until September 22, 2013. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Dolores and I always enjoy photographing the butterflies.

Heavenly Orange Fluff

This jello salad, "Heavenly Orange Fluff", is so creamy and fruity. While visiting my sister-in-law a few weeks ago in Mechanicsburg, PA she served a delicious dinner and a dish she called "Heavenly Orange Fluff". My husband and I had never tasted this jello dish and found it very refreshing, as well as delicious. I made the jello dish this week and it is so easy. Below is the recipe:

Ingredients

2 sm packages or 1 large orange gelatin
2-1/2 cups boiling water
2 cans (11 ounces each) or one large can mandarin oranges, drained
1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple, undrained
1 can (6 ounces) frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed

TOPPING:

1 package (3.4 ounces) instant lemon pudding mix
1 cup cold milk
1/2 container of small cool-whip

directions:

In a large bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in oranges, pineapple and orange juice concentrate. Coat a 13-in. x 9-in. dish with cooking spray; add gelatin mixture. Chill until firm.

Next, in a large bowl, beat pudding mix with milk until slightly firm; fold in cool-whip. Spread over firm orange gelantin layer.

Chill. Yield 12+ servings.

Bring the Children to the Lewisburg Farmers Market to "Pot a Plant for Mom"

For Mother's Day, the Lewisburg Farmers Market is providing a special time for the children to pot a flowering plant for mom. Potting soil, a cup and a choice of flowering plant will be available for some fun now and later as the plant grows in your garden border. A grown-up will be around to help out any little fingers.

The Lewisburg Farmers Market is on May 11 located in the parking lot between the Post Office and Lewisburg United Methodist Church. The market is open every Saturday from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm through October. Watch for special events occurring throughout the season.

The weekly market features a wide variety of in-season fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, plants and fresh flowers that are grown locally in the Greenbrier Valley.

CASA Superhero Race Fundraiser

On May 25 in White Sulphur Springs, CASA of the ELEVENTH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, WV, Inc., will be hosting their Superhero Race fundraiser.

This race in conjunction with the 2013 West Virginia Dandelion Festival in White Sulphur Springs, WV..... that is a celebration and appreciation for the determination of the dandelion.

This event will be great for all ages to participate and become a SUPER hero along with our community leaders to lead the fight against child abuse and support the CASA Superhero Run. CASA’s 5k race.... for the runners in the community along with a one mile children’s race and a family fun walk/race totaling one mile

Many children can’t run from abuse. This challenge is to get people involved, to make an impact, and help change your community for the better!

All participants are encouraged to wear superhero costumes, t-shirts, your own designs , etc. Bring your family and join the superhero fun!

Registration starts at 8:00 am... fishing until 1:00 pm.

In past years, visitors from across the state of West Virginia and other places like Virginia Beach, VA; Winston-Salem, NC and Brooklyn, NY flocked to the White Sulphur Springs National Fish Hatchery for the Annual Fishing Derby.
