west monroe la: School is back in session! - 08/17/11 10:19 AM
School started here on Monday.
I'm too old to have a student at the elementary school only a block away, but I consider myself to be very lucky living so close to this wonderful school. Why? Every morning I hear the principal's voice on the loudspeaker say, "Good morning, boys and girls! Please stand for the Pledge of Allegiance."
It's a wonderful way to start the day--for the students and for me!
PS.Be sure to have your eyes open for those precious ones while driving near the school zones.

west monroe la: A Look at the Market in Indian Lakes, West Monroe, LA - 06/15/10 11:47 AM
The home market is always busy in Indian Lakes! This popular community was built around 3 lakes, and now has more than 530 households. Drew Elementary, Westridge Middle and West Monroe High Schools serve this area.
Currently, only 9 homes are for sale ranging in price from $157,000 to $649,500--quite a range of sizes, amenities, and prices. This is evidence that Indian Lakes has affordable homes as well as some of the larger, more prestigious homes in Ouachita Parish.

Since the beginning of 2010, 11 homes have sold with an average of 94 days on the market, priced from $145,000 to $550,000. As expected, the … (0 comments)

west monroe la: Today is FLAG DAY--Retire a US FLAG with DIGNITY. - 06/14/10 03:42 PM
Many people don't know what to do with a flag that has seen its better days. Proper etiquette for the flag is to remove it when it looks faded or torn. It must be disposed of properly, too, not just thrown in the trash.
When a flag is so tattered that it can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. The American Legion, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of the USA and other organizations regularly conduct flag retirement ceremonies, often on Flag Day.
If you live … (0 comments)

west monroe la: Can it possibly be FALL? - 09/17/09 08:46 AM
In Louisiana, September usually has 90+degree temps. We've had a little reprieve lately that leads me to the hope that fall may be coming soon. During this week's "rain event" in which the Monroe/West Monroe area has received 2" of rain per day since Saturday, the temperatures have been lower than the norm. Chances of rain today are 80%, so I think it will be another mild, though soggy, day.
Three things are the signs of fall to me:
1.  The majestic pecan trees in my back yard are heavy with pecans. This is good news because last year was a year … (0 comments)

west monroe la: Mother Nature at work in West Monroe, LA - 07/27/09 10:10 AM
For the past couple of weeks, people in Monroe and West Monroe have been watching the Ouachita River even more than usual. Why? Because a beautiful 2-unit condo building is about to COLLAPSE into the River!
For those of you who are not from this area, the Ouachita River was extremely high for several weeks. This caused the river bank to become totally saturated. When the river began to go down, the bank became unstable.
Officials report that the river bank has failed in numerous places along the course of the Ouachita, but it's too expensive to repair. It would take a … (2 comments)

west monroe la: Moving to Monroe? Good news about the local economy... - 06/25/09 03:57 PM
Talk to anyone from any other state. The majority are singing the blues about their local economy. Here in northeast Louisiana, we have reason to celebrate! News of large expansions happening in the not-too-distant future makes us excited, but what is already happening BEFORE the new businesses is still good news.
If you're looking for a construction job, Monroe is the place to be.
