You know 411, 911 but do you know 811?  I bet the person that puts your real estate sign posts in the yards around Chesapeake knows 811.  811 is a Virginia statewide number for anyone getting ready to do any type of excavation on their property.  It is commonly known as Miss Utility.  Once you call they will come out and mark your utility lines so you don't have a mishap.  Some cable and phone lines are just several inches under ground and it doesn't take much to dig them up.

Do you know where yard sales are in Virginia?   I know where most of them are because I go to www.YardSaleTreasureMap.com .  The site takes information from Craigs list and posts them.  You enter a starting address, how many miles you want to drive, the day of the week and click search.  You are awarded with a Google (of course) map with each yard sale as well as driving directions.  If you click on the red balloon it gives you the time, address and any specifics about what is being sold.

Why not warm up your open house in Virginia this weekend with some great Mulled Cider with Butter.
2 quarts fresh ciderr                                 3 cinnamon sticks (broke up) plus 10 for garnish
4 Tablespoons butter                               1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar      1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
10 thin halved orange slices                      1/3 cup dark rum
1/2 medium cored but not peeled apple     4 whole cloves
Place the cider in a large pan over medium heat til warm

I read an article recently by John F. Farber that brought up an interesting subject.  Transfer fees in Virginia.  Have you seen them on a settlement statement and should we be worried about them. 
Transfer fees are imposed by a developer on a piece of property for up to 99 years and are usually 1% of the gross sales price every time a property transfers ownership.  The developers say they can sell the properties cheaper but I don't see it.  What the developer does is sell the rights to the transfer fees at a substantial discount and walks away with extra … (1 comments)

virginia: Atlas Van Lines Says Welcome Home - 01/31/09 08:41 AM
Atlas Van Lines has classified Virginia as a moving destination.  I could have told them that if they would have asked.  People are moving away from states with hard hit industries like automobiles and heavy manafacturing.  Believe it or not many midwesterners are headed to warmer climates and brighter economic prospects.
Atlas said they moved 4,210 families into the state as opposed to 2,968 out.  Washington, DC had the highest gain as did North Carolina.  The overall market for moving has cooled by 9% as has most of the economy.
