virginia beach: Hampton Roads #5 of 50 for Working Mothers - 10/18/11 09:37 AM
Forbes magazine has ranked Hampton Roads #5 of 50 metropolitan areas for working mothers.  Hampton Roads includes Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton and Newport News. The criteria was varied but includes such things as number of physicians, school-district-per-pupil expenditures and violent crime rates as reported by the FBI.
A steady paycheck is nice but included in the criteria was a healthy employment rate, safety, health care and education.  I don't think they included weather in the criteria because Buffalo-Niagra was #1.
Richmond was seventh and D.C. was 9th.  Raleigh, N.C. was 41st and Jacksonville, Fl was 37th (the Navy wants … (0 comments)

virginia beach: New Camera New Birds - 01/27/11 11:08 PM
Santa brought me a new camera, Panasonic DMC FZ 100, for Christmas.  Along with that he brought a family of new birds that I haven't identified yet but there are about 8 of them that clean my feeder out on a regular basis.  My back yard in Glen Wood in Virginia Beach is really quite busy this time of year.  A bit surprising as I have at least 10 different types feeding at different times and sometimes trying to get there all at once.
At first I wasn't as happy with the pictures as I should be until I looked at … (7 comments)

virginia beach: Xmas Cat - 12/28/10 09:10 PM
I was at my sisters house in Virginia Beach playing with my Xmas present and caught this picture.  I took three or four and this is the only one with the two color eyes.

virginia beach: Fannie Mae Help In Virginia Beach - 09/07/10 01:37 PM
I have a buyer that is purchasing a Fannie Mae property in Virginia Beach (sold as is).  The home inspectior found a leak in the sky light.  The buyer asked for the skylight to be repaired.  The agent has gotten bids on but the seller hasn't answered.  There are also several appraisal items that need fixing.  I asked the listing agent if the seller is willing to make those repairs but she said she wouldn't tell me until the buyer signs off on no repairs to the skylight.  Kind of smells like rotten eggs.  The next words of course are she … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Why I Like A Small Sensor Camera Part VII (DMC FZ-18) - 07/25/10 04:35 PM
I was standing in my yard the other day with my Panasonic DMC FZ 18 and remembered why I like it so well.  I took these three pictures in my backyard in Virginia Beach without moving or changing lens.  They were done in automatic mode.  It is truely an amazing camera that starts at 28mm and goes way out to about as far as one can see.

The golfers are in the center of screen even though you
can't see them

virginia beach: Does Your Buyer Want A "Girl Cave" In Virginia Beach - 07/16/10 09:08 PM
I have been taking buyers out for years and having men wanting a "Man Cave".  You know the big hulking room you can put a home theatre in or fix the car or play pool.  Now I was reading in our local paper about a lady in Virginia Beach making a "Girl Cave".
A "Girl Cave" could be something simple according to Betsy DiJulio.  She converted a former guest room into a "Girl Cave" by adding a nice looking sleep sofa, dresser, end table, lamp and a t.v. .  Now she has a room for guest to relax in, sleep in and … (5 comments)

virginia beach: Virginia Beach To Purchase INDIGO DUNES!!! - 07/14/10 10:51 PM
Virginia Beach along with several conservation groups are planning to purchase INDIGO DUNES.  This is the last "wild" major tract along the Lynnhaven River and should have been purchased a long time ago.  This area has oyster beds, a maritime forest and wetlands all within its 122 acres.
The land was bought several years ago by L. M. Sandler and Sons for $30 million with Wells Fargo holding a loan for $19.4 million (ouch).  They were going to put over 1000 homes on the property.  The city will ante up about $5 million from its open space fund to pay for … (2 comments)

virginia beach: Fix For The iPhone 4 Reception Problem In Virginia Beach - 07/13/10 08:22 AM
This is a repost of a post in another blog that I found.  I am sure it will work in other places than Virginia Beach.
You've got a new iPhone 4, but you're a bit blue because apparently you've been holding phones wrong your whole life. No need to buy an expensive case to fix your phone-holding habits and weak-signal woes. Fix it with a cheap bracelet! Some iPhone 4 owners have reported that holding the phone low and with your hand wrapped around the bottom half of the phone has deadened or canceled their wireless/3G reception. Many people hold their phone … (3 comments)

virginia beach: Any Coast Guard or Navy Vietnam Veterans in Virginia Beach? - 06/29/10 10:08 PM
Being a retired Navy Senior Chief I try to keep abreast of service related items in the Virginia Beach area.  The latest is for Coast Guard and Navy veterans who served in Vietnam.  There is an updated list of vessels that were exposed to the herbicide Agent Orange.
The additions include all Coast Guard vessels with a hull designation of WPB (patrol boat) and also the WHEC (high endurance cutter).  For any veteran who can prove they served aboard these ships they can have their benefits expedited.
If you don't know, Agent Orange is linked to several types of cancer and … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Swimming Pool Safety In Virginia Beach - 06/27/10 09:32 PM
I sell homes in Virginia Beach with swimming pools and have safety on my mind all the time.  If you are looking at a home with me that has a pool I will provide you with not only printed information on pool safety but also provide you with some good web sites to go to.  One of the best is one the Consumer Product Safety Commission.  For those of you that already have pools it is a good place to go as a reminder or to find out how to make your pool safer.

virginia beach: Approved Short Sale In Virginia Beach - 06/24/10 10:17 PM
What is an approved Short Sale in Virginia Beach?  This is a question for the Short Sale experts out there.  I have seen several listings here that say in the remarks that a "Short Sale" has been approved at a certain price but no other other terms have been disclosed.  When I look into the disclosure section there is a for reducing commissions if the bank chooses.
So my question is when you get a bank to approve a Short Sale what does that mean? and why can't I as the buyers agent have access to the approval letter.  If my buyer … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Flying Ants or Swarming Termites - 04/20/10 09:19 PM
I woke the other day to what looked like snow in my backyard in Virginia Beach.  On closer inspection it was a swarm of flying insects from the yard next door.  I was in a hurry and took a couple of pictures but now realize I should have captured a few to see what they were.  From a distance you can't tell the difference but I guess up close you can inspect the wings and the bodies.  I know the difference now but still don't know what these insects were.  By the way, ants have three part to their body (termites … (7 comments)

virginia beach: King of The Backyard Feeder in Virginia Beach - 04/20/10 09:00 PM
I have a new king of the backyard birdfeeder.  Last year it was a hawk of some kind.  He could eat the birds.  This raven just likes to sit on top of the feeder and not let anyone else eat.  It is just crazy.

virginia beach: It Is Snowing in Virginia Beach - 04/04/10 02:40 PM
I went out this morning to enjoy the fresh air in Virginia Beach and it was snowing at about 60 degrees.  You see the Bradford Pear trees are in full bloom and they are very pretty unless your car is under them.  It was snowing little Bradford Pear petals everywhere down our street in Glenwood.

virginia beach: I Have Been Droid ed in Virginia Beach - 03/15/10 08:17 PM
I have been DROID ed and I like it.  Actually I bought two.  One for me and one for my bride of 36 years.  I had a Motorola Q9M and the wife a Curve Blackberry.  The battery life on the Q was dismal to say the least.  The Blackberry was quite good but using the internet was torture.  The DROID fixes all those problems and then some.
If you haven't surfed on a 3G network it is great.  No lag it just zooms.  The two keyboards and speech give you lots of ways to enter information.  I bought a mount window mount … (4 comments)

virginia beach: Milestones - 03/08/10 08:32 PM
What milestones are in your life?  I recently went over 200,000 points on Active Rain.  I will be 55 in a few short days.  I just bought a new DROID and it is great.  I lived in the same house in Virginia Beach in Glenwood for over 10 years.  My car just went over 70,000 miles.  But the biggest milestone is 36 YEARS of marriage.  WOW can you believe it?  I certainly can't.  Well on my way to the next 36.

virginia beach: Tax Rate Increase For Virginia Beach A Possibility - 02/25/10 09:12 AM
Will the tax rate increase for homeowners in Virginia Beach?  Home values in Virginia Beach and in my area of Glenwood have continued downward for the second year in a row.  The assessments on homes will fall by an average of 5.75%.  What a striking difference from 2006 - 2008 when assessments rose by over 20% each year in Virginia Beach.  If you want to see the entire report go to PilotOnline.com  While homeowners may think they will see their taxes go down, Mayor Will Sessoms thinks there should be a revenue nuetral budget.  Sounds like a plan to me.  What … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Curbside Meters For The Homeless - 02/18/10 03:11 PM
Virgnia Beach is considering installing curbside meters-similiar to parking meters- that donars can insert coins in.  The money will be used to help the homeless.  The head of the Resort Advisory Commission, Jim Davis said the idea is discourage panhandling.  The money will be funneled to a charity such as the United Way.  The city of Denver has something similiar and they have raised about $100,000 a year with it.
