virginia beach: Flying Ants or Swarming Termites - 04/20/10 02:19 PM
I woke the other day to what looked like snow in my backyard in Virginia Beach.  On closer inspection it was a swarm of flying insects from the yard next door.  I was in a hurry and took a couple of pictures but now realize I should have captured a few to see what they were.  From a distance you can't tell the difference but I guess up close you can inspect the wings and the bodies.  I know the difference now but still don't know what these insects were.  By the way, ants have three part to their body (termites … (7 comments)

virginia beach: King of The Backyard Feeder in Virginia Beach - 04/20/10 02:00 PM
I have a new king of the backyard birdfeeder.  Last year it was a hawk of some kind.  He could eat the birds.  This raven just likes to sit on top of the feeder and not let anyone else eat.  It is just crazy.

virginia beach: It Is Snowing in Virginia Beach - 04/04/10 07:40 AM
I went out this morning to enjoy the fresh air in Virginia Beach and it was snowing at about 60 degrees.  You see the Bradford Pear trees are in full bloom and they are very pretty unless your car is under them.  It was snowing little Bradford Pear petals everywhere down our street in Glenwood.

virginia beach: I Have Been Droid ed in Virginia Beach - 03/15/10 01:17 PM
I have been DROID ed and I like it.  Actually I bought two.  One for me and one for my bride of 36 years.  I had a Motorola Q9M and the wife a Curve Blackberry.  The battery life on the Q was dismal to say the least.  The Blackberry was quite good but using the internet was torture.  The DROID fixes all those problems and then some.
If you haven't surfed on a 3G network it is great.  No lag it just zooms.  The two keyboards and speech give you lots of ways to enter information.  I bought a mount window mount … (4 comments)

virginia beach: Milestones - 03/08/10 12:32 PM
What milestones are in your life?  I recently went over 200,000 points on Active Rain.  I will be 55 in a few short days.  I just bought a new DROID and it is great.  I lived in the same house in Virginia Beach in Glenwood for over 10 years.  My car just went over 70,000 miles.  But the biggest milestone is 36 YEARS of marriage.  WOW can you believe it?  I certainly can't.  Well on my way to the next 36.

virginia beach: Tax Rate Increase For Virginia Beach A Possibility - 02/25/10 01:12 AM
Will the tax rate increase for homeowners in Virginia Beach?  Home values in Virginia Beach and in my area of Glenwood have continued downward for the second year in a row.  The assessments on homes will fall by an average of 5.75%.  What a striking difference from 2006 - 2008 when assessments rose by over 20% each year in Virginia Beach.  If you want to see the entire report go to PilotOnline.com  While homeowners may think they will see their taxes go down, Mayor Will Sessoms thinks there should be a revenue nuetral budget.  Sounds like a plan to me.  What … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Curbside Meters For The Homeless - 02/18/10 07:11 AM
Virgnia Beach is considering installing curbside meters-similiar to parking meters- that donars can insert coins in.  The money will be used to help the homeless.  The head of the Resort Advisory Commission, Jim Davis said the idea is discourage panhandling.  The money will be funneled to a charity such as the United Way.  The city of Denver has something similiar and they have raised about $100,000 a year with it.

virginia beach: WOW!!! What A Price For The Oceanfront In Virginia Beach - 02/09/10 12:49 PM
What a price for the Oceanfront in Virginia Beach.  Recently a home sold at the Oceanfront for             $7.6 million.  I t was the most expensive piece of real estate sold in some time at the Oceanfront.  The home was the retreat of Art Sandler.  Sandler and his brother own L.M. Sandler & Sons, a beach based housing development firm.  Most of us have heard of them one way or another but who can afford such a price?  How about the chief executive of ADS, Inc. Luke Hillier.  What does ADS do?  How about supplying special operations gear to the military.  Mr. Hillier is teaming up with US … (2 comments)

virginia beach: Is Your Heating System Failing In Virginia Beach? - 02/04/10 01:15 AM
It is cold out there and heating systems are failing in Virginia Beach.  When you start looking for a new heating system keep something important in mind that you may not have thought about.  The INSTALLER!!!.  You can buy a Cadillac heating system and have a YUGO installer.  What you end up with is system that doesn't function the way it should.
With that in mind, what do you look for in a new heating system?  Know this abbreviations.
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency).  This number tells you how well the furnance uses gas.  If you put a dollar of gas in … (4 comments)

virginia beach: Lead Based Paint and Contractors!!! In Virginia Beach - 02/03/10 07:48 AM
Homes in Virginia Beach with potential lead based paint and contractors are soon going to be very initimate.  On April 22, 20101 any contractor working on a home built prior to 1978 will need to be be a "EPA certified renovator".  This work only pertains to the disturbance of lead based paint.   I think a lot of the work done inside a home would qualify in some way or another.  If it is a firm doing the work then at least one worker on the job must be certified.
Here is the basic regulation and the web site to go visit.

virginia beach: Animals and Snow in Virginia Beach - 01/30/10 12:02 AM
Here are some pictures of the animals running around in Glenwood, my area of Virginia Beach.  This was first thing this morning around 7 am.  I saw a rabbit but he was too fast for me.  We have about 5 inches where I am and expecting more.
The man walking this guy said it was the dogs first snow.

I think the birds are thinking about how to get into the warm house.

You can't see them but the lake is filled with seagulls.

Here is a closeup of the seagulls.

virginia beach: No Phone At Any Speed In Virginia Beach - 01/27/10 01:21 AM
No phone at any speed in Virginia Beach is a safe way to drive but how do you accomplish it?  Use the off button of course.  What if you don't want your teenagers driving and talking when you are not there.  What if you aren't disciplined enough.  What would your insurance company think when you are in an accident talking on the phone with your buyers in the car?
There is a service out there called ZoomSafer that uses a phones GPS to determine if a phone user is moving at driving speeds.  If so, the phone is disabled.  The system can be … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Do You Know Where The Yard Sales Are In Virginia Beach? - 01/26/10 08:41 AM
Do you know where yard sales are in the Glenwood section of Virginia Beach?   I know where most of them are because I go to www.YardSaleTreasureMap.com .  The site takes information from Craigs list and posts them.  You enter a starting address, how many miles you want to drive, the day of the week and click search.  You are awarded with a Google (of course) map with each yard sale as well as driving directions.  If you click on the red balloon it gives you the time, address and any specifics about what is being sold.

virginia beach: Hampton Roads To Be Silicon Valley Of Wind Energy - 01/16/10 02:14 PM
The mayor of Virginia Beach, William Sessoms, wants the Hampton Roads area to become the Silicon Valley of Wind Energy.  Mayor Fraim of Norfolk would like to turn the old Ford Plant into a manafacuring plant for wind turbines.  There is a new group in town called the Virginia Offshore Wind Coalition and they want to make Hampton Roads a wind energy hub.  Josh Prueher president of Earl Energy estimates that the potential for 10,000 jobs and a net worth of $80 billion to the region is possible.  Of course as with almost anything in the area has to approved by … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Rent Prices Rose Slightly In Virginia Beach - 01/06/10 10:54 AM
Rents prices rose slightly in Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads last year.  Good news for landlords and not so good for renters.  They were up almost 1.5% from April to Oct and the vacancy rate is down to 6.9%.  That probably will go up after new figures are in for the next quarter.  More houses were bought and taken out of the rental market.  That should drive vacancy rates down and rents up.  More investors are being foreclosed on at the same time.
Planned new construction for apartments dropped dramatically as well from nearly 3,800 to 1,500.  That is a really big … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Text The Kettle, Whats Next? - 12/08/09 12:35 AM
It is that time of year Virginia Beach.  Lights, decorations, presents and the bell ringers from the Salvation Army.  If you are like me you never carry pocket change or anything less than a $100 bill in your pocket.  So what do you give to the bell ringers?  Here is a thought, text the kettle.  Thats right, text the kettle.  Just text "sal" to 50555 and instantly $5 goes to them.  See how fast your 15 year can text that and empty out your account.  Seriously though, this is a great time of year to remember the bell ringers and if you … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Orange You Glad You Stopped By Glenwood in Virginia Beach - 12/04/09 08:37 AM
I was out walking in Glenwood with my camera the other day and saw this orange tree.  Didn't know you could grow them here.  I go by this tree everyday and never noticed it until then.  It must have had oranges on it for a while and in past years.  How funny that you can miss something like that.
