virginia beach: Building Gone But Church Lives On - 02/06/08 11:12 AM
The Zion Baptist Church building was destroyed in a fire recently.  The building had stood since 1894 but other buildings had served the church since 1865.  Blacks had split off from the mother church for many reasons and was the first church owned in Portsmouth by blacks.  The church meets in an auditorium at the Sheriff's Academy at Randolph and Green streets.  The Rev. Thomas T. Shields thinks god doesn't want him to build a church building but to build ministries.

virginia beach: New Meaning for "Cub Scout" - 02/06/08 10:51 AM
5 month old lion cubs, Granby and Neka, made their first public outing a few weeks ago.  I wasn't able to make it but was told that the rainy weather didn't stop the cubs from having a good time playing with each other.  Neka is the female and appears to be the more aggressive of the two.  She has been seen fighting her mom Zola, for food and tearing at the mane of her father Mramba.  I don't have any pictures but you can follow this link to the cub cam and if you are lucky you can watch from your computer screen.

virginia beach: Suffolk's Next City Manager - 02/06/08 08:40 AM
No job application?  Wow that's pretty good but considering that Selena Cuffee-Glen has been with the city since 2005, maybe none was needed.  She won Vice Mayor Curtis Milteer over on a trip to New York.  City officials were trying to get the nations top three bond rating agencies to improve the cities outlook financially.  Cuffee-Glenn played an important role and two of the three agencies responded by withdrawing their "negative outlook".  Most everybody thought of her when Jim Johnson, the current city manager, announced his retirement.  There was talk of looking outside but sometimes it pays to promote from within.

virginia beach: Fairmont Park - 02/01/08 10:39 AM
Fairmont Park was established around 1904 and the lots started at $92.00.  As a place for homes it didn't really take off for twenty years.  Then it was found by World War 1 vets and off it went.  The streets were named for famed battles such as Verdun, Marne, Bapaume, the bloddy Somme and the infamos Vimy Ridge.  The leaders are also acknowledge with streets such as Pershing and Kitchener.  Next time you take a trip through Norfolk, take a trip through Fairmont Park and remember the fallen heros.

virginia beach: Waterfront Development To Be Guided - 01/30/08 11:53 AM
The Planning Commission is is trying to make sure the waterfront is a community gathering place and not for inappropriate development.  You could get an upscale haircut but not a tan.  You may buy sweets from a bakery, art from a gallery but not get your shoes repaired.  Those adult magazines, forget it.  The city council needs to look at the changes and approve them.

virginia beach: Local Man Wants To Move - 01/30/08 11:40 AM
Justin Nelson and his wife want to move but so far he can't.  It seems he received his property from his father by way of a family transfer.  Suffolk is the only local city that allows local transfers and one of the stipulations is that you can't sell the property for ten years.  Mr. Nelson received a job transfer to Roanoke and is asking the city council to approve the sale of his home in Suffolk.  It should be interesting to see how it comes out.

virginia beach: Eyes Don't Lie - 01/30/08 11:19 AM
I just heard recently that the Norfolk City Jail will scan the iris of inmates eyes when they are incarcerated.  The new equipment will cost about $30,000 and should be ready in March.  The equipment takes a black and white picture of the iris.  When the inmate is being released, the pictures are matched up.  I always thought that is what finger prints are for but apparently the computers or no computers don't talk to each other.  Well, whatever it takes to keep the correct inmate in jail, I'm for.

virginia beach: Village Schools Survive - 01/23/08 11:46 AM
Two schools scheduled to merge have been spared. Suffolk has been grappling for a long time whether to merge Southwestern Elementary and Robertson Elementary but have finally decided to let the two schools stand. The class sizes are small, both are fully accredited and the parents don't want the village feel of the schools to go away. There would have been a great savings every year by having one school but the parents have won out. Southwestern will get a $21. 9 millon renovation and Robertson will get a facelift and expansion expected to cost $10.8 million.

virginia beach: New Skate Park Proposed - 01/23/08 10:53 AM
The state last year restricted cities from condemning blighted properties just because they are blighted.  With that in mind, the city is looking into condeming some properties in the Wards Corner area of the city.  In its place would be a skate park.  That would be for a public recreational facility and is allowed under the new state rules.  The city is looking hard at several sites but there are problems with most of them.  The Wards Corner option would solve several problems at one time.

virginia beach: Boat Tax Floating Away - 01/23/08 10:40 AM
The dreaded boat tax may be going away.  It has not raised any money and may actually be costing the city money to collect.  Many boats have left for cities with lower taxes causing marinas and resturants around the city gasping for customers.  If its broke, fix it.

Tommy Smigiel of Norview High fame is in the running for Teacher Of The Year.  If he wins he would be the first teacher from Hampton Roads to receive the award.  The contest is sponsored by the Council of Chief State  School Officers and the ING foundation.  Smigiel is in only his eighth year of teaching and is teaching at his alma mater.  Let us pray for his continued success in his drive for teacher of the year.

virginia beach: Wisconsin Still A Winner - 01/20/08 07:30 AM
The Wisconsin may be mothballed but she still brings her big guns to the party.  She is berthed next to Nauticus which is Norfolks' idea of a Naval Museum.  The last figure for visitors to the battleship was 1.8 million and should top 2 million by April.  Please come out and keep these two wonderful places afloat.

virginia beach: Nimmo Parkway - 01/12/08 08:55 AM
What's in a name?  Well Nimmo Parkway (pronounced nimmo as in rim not kneemo) was named for a geographic area of the beach.  That name also the name of a fine church in the area.  The land the church was built on was essentially given to the church by a family named, who else, Nimmo.  That was back in 1791 when Ann Nimmo sold the land to the church and the rest is history.

virginia beach: Hotel for Edinburgh - 01/12/08 08:42 AM
If a local company has its way, the area of Edinburgh could have as many as 200 hotel rooms.  Hotel chains such as Hilton, Marriott and Holiday Inn have expressed an interest.  The company has asked the city to rezone 7 acres and if rezoned, the first hotel could be open sometime in 2009.

virginia beach: The Green Store - 01/12/08 08:31 AM
Norfolk has a green store.  In fact it is the only one in the area.  The store is called Green Alternatives and is owned by Amanda Clarkson and her mother, Frances.  Where else could you buy stationary made from elephant poop or soy candles, nylon shopping bags and greeting cards embedded with wildflower seeds.  You can recycle your old computers, DVD players and other electronic items for free.  They call this e-cycling or recycling electronic wastes.  The store has teamed up Computer Recycling of Virginia and they say they do not dump their products in third would countries.

virginia beach: Mail Carrier Really Delivers - 12/31/07 11:43 AM
Lamar Rivers is not only a mail carrier but he is one that pays attention and cares about people.  Recently he noticed mail piling up in one of his customer's mailbox in the Camellia Shores area.  He became suspicious and rang her door bell.  When she did not answer he went around the home trying to find her.  He alerted some neighbors and eventually got into the house.  They found her on the floor with the phone off the hook.  She had suffered a stroke and had been there for up to 48 hours.  Make sure you give Lamar Rivers the due … (1 comments)

virginia beach: Virginia Beach House Gets Drilled - 12/15/07 12:32 AM
The Lynnhaven House in Virginia Beach is getting drilled.  Michael Worthington and some associates had came from England to drill holes in the basement timbers.  The city is taking over the house and wants to learn more about it.  So they called in some experts who think they can tell not only what year the lumber was built but in what season it was cut.  In case you didn't know, the science is called drochronology.  Lets hope the city gets the information they want from this timeless home.

virginia beach: Norfolk Middle School Football - 12/15/07 12:17 AM
Norfolk's middle schools have no football program.  Who knew.  What feeds the area high schools?  The Mayor Paul Fraim wants to discuss the possibilities.  The council was taken by surprise but seemed warm to the idea.  As always in sports, funding is a problem and that is way there has not been any middle school football.  Lets hope the school board can come up with some money.

virginia beach: Virginia Beach Oysters - 12/11/07 10:38 AM
Wow can you believe it.  After many years of being shut down the Lynnhaven River is open to oyster harvesting.  The Lynnhaven River used to have the biggest and most succulent oysters for miles around.  Disease, sewage and development along the river shut it down decades ago.  Now some 1,500 acres are open again and producing some very good oysters.  Cam Chalmers is one of the farmers and is expecting to harvest the 2 to 3 million he is planting.  Lets hope he succeeds many times over. … (0 comments)

virginia beach: Norfolk History To Be Saved? - 12/09/07 06:06 AM
Not if council members have their way.  Three historic buildings in downtown Norfolk will be razed for a new hotel and convention center.  Preservationists are mounting a petition drive to force the city to delay the demolition.  This is a last resort effort.  The signs are up and demolition of this real estate is imminent.  The council does not want to stop the destruction of the three buildings.  On a side note, Norfolk's downtown area was named in May as one of the Most Endangered Historic Sites in Virginia by the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities/Preservation .  Now we now way. … (1 comments)
