According to the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs ...
"Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.
Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country." In the U.S. this weekend, we'll celebrate Memorial Day in modern ways.
How Choosing the Right Lender Can Make a Big Difference Mindset. Mood. Outlook. Funny how the human mind works ... Saturday night we headed into the northern part of the City to visit family. What really stood out that night was the number of people walking or riding bikes. There'd been fewer out over the last few weeks, driven indoors by the sub-zero temps. There was still plenty of snow on the ground. Temps aren't allowing it to melt. But the air seemed almost warm. To our minds, it seemed near balmy. Yet just one (17 comments)

Chicago's best-known weatherman, Tom Skilling, says Chicago and all of Chicagoland are on a "hot streak". And there's no doubting it.
Summer is arriving this year with a real fury ... bringing intense heat, scorching temperatures, and strong winds. The sun's rays are as direct as they can be here in our region, and hitting as far north as they will get at any point during the year.

The Chicago SunTimes says 100. The Chicago Tribune/WGN's Tommy Skilling says 100 too! What am I talking about? The Chicagoland weather forecast for Friday through Saturday, July 1st and 2nd. That means heat and dangerously high temperatures. It also means sunshine. Lots and lots of sunshine. Two of summer's most potentially damaging health issues can result from heat and sun. A cool, comfortable place to stay during extreme temperatures is a must for Chicagoland residents and visitors. The State of Illinois' "Keep Cool" Campaign makes over 120 state facilities available as cooling centers. Cooling centers are open throughout normal business hours (8:30 am to 5:30 pm, (4 comments)
Below you will find a list of Chicago and Chicagoland communities offering Farmers Markets or French Markets during this summer and into early fall of 2011. Many of these Markets also offer items beyond produce and food, such as musical performances, kids activities, community services, and more. There's great benefit to supporting these Farmers Markets and French Markets. Besides enjoying the health benefits of fresh, locally-grown produce, fruits, and vegetables ... you're also supporting the local economy and your fellow neighbors. Again, a huge win-win for all involved. Hope you seek-out and enjoy a Farmer's Market (12 comments)
Living in the Chicagoland area is great. You can enjoy the best of both worlds ... a little city and a little country. Drive into the city and you can enjoy museums, zoos, the lakefront, theatre, the Magnificent Mile, major league sports, music entertainment of all kinds, and more. Yet, you can drive a relatively short distance and enjoy farm fields, open spaces, and nature in its abundance.
About 3 years ago, my wife and I ventured into the city and discovered the "Old Town School of Folk Music". Located on North Lincoln Avenue, it's smack in the middle of (11 comments)
