Tips for Water Damage

Water leaks/flooding can cause great damage to a home if not taken care of properly.  Some water events are not covered by insurance, so you may want to check with your agent beforehand to ensure you have the best coverage available.  However, here are some tips to minimize damage if something does occur.

•1.        Notify your insurance company and call for professional help.  Damage from water and bacteria growth can begin within hours.

•2.        Take photos of the damage before clean up begins if possible.

•3.        Remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting.

•4.        Remove wet area rugs and other floor coverings that may be dried out by hanging them up.

•5.        Do not enter a room with standing water if the electricity is still on.

•6.        Do not use a normal household vacuum to remove water.

•7.        Do not remove permanently installed floor coverings without professional help.

•8.        Do not disturb or remove mold if it is visible without professional help.

•9.        Ensure that the insurance adjuster approves any of the repairs before the work is completed.  However, you may want to take any necessary steps that will prevent further damage until their inspection is made.

Gene Welch (Welch Insurance Agency, Inc.)
Hi All, As the cold of winter settles in let me remind all of you to take some time to properly winterize your home or rental properties. It is good to double check items like your lawn sprinkler systems to ensure main supply valves are shut off…
