real estate: Too late for the bad Apple... Early bird gets the worm. - 07/08/11 10:22 PM
Wonder what this will do to revenues. This from Business Times: Apple Inc. 's iAd mobile advertising business is struggling to keep top clients, cutting rates by up to 70 percent, Bloomberg reports citing people familiar with the matter. Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) was initially charging clients such as Citigroup Inc.(NYSE: C) and JC Penny Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) $1 million or more to run campaigns, when it rolled out the iAd service a year ago. The report says Apple is now charging as little as $300,000 for packages as clients have turned instead to Google Inc. 's (NASDAQ: GOOG) AdMob, Millennial Media and

Nicolas Cage - turns 47 Coming up with a list of "did you know?" weirdnesses pertaining to oddball Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage might seem like shooting very strange fish in a very abnormal barrel. But how better to kick off our long-overdue Nicolas Cage Week than by assembling the most peculiar minutiae we could round up about one of Hollywood's most eccentric thespians? To celebrate the actor's 47th birthday this Friday (which also happens to be the very day his new movie, 'Season of the Witch,' is released), Moviefone hereby presents 47 titillating Cage tidbits --

Time Travel: Take a Trip Through Civic Center History January 6th, 2011 credit: Bancroft Library, Jesse B. Cooke Collection via Up from the Deep The beginning of a new year is as good a time as any for a field trip through San Francisco history and this morning the folks at Up from the Deep took a trip through a long-gone piece of Civic Center: Marshall Square. The plaza once connected Market Street to City Hall Ave (likewise long-gone at this point) and was the original home of the Pioneer Monument that now sits on Fulton Street between the Public Library’s Main Branch

Florida’s Gay Adoption Ban Crumbled November 21st, 2010 Saturday is National Adoption Day. This year, Martin Gill is free to mark the day as the official father of two foster children he’s been raising since a caseworker dropped the boys — a feverish baby and his wary 4-year-old brother, both riddled with ringworm — on his North Miami doorstep six years ago.A year after the boys arrived, Gill petitioned to adopt them. And that’s when the wait began. Gill was a trusted foster parent who had cared for six children since he was licensed in 2002 — that number is now

The Sit/Lie Proponents Win, Prop L Passes; Prop G, Changing the Way Muni Drivers Are Paid, Also Passes November 4th, 2010 sit-lie-vid.jpg Measure L, the Sit/Lie law, looks to have passed with 53% of the city voting yes to outlaw sitting or lying on sidewalks between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sure, the whole issue of enforcement (which will likely be driven by area businesses, as this proposition was driven by Haight Street merchants), remains to be seen. But there you have it, folks. S.F. is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to sidewalks. Proposition

real estate: SoMa buildings attracting tech companies - 10/12/10 08:31 PM
SoMa buildings attracting tech companies By: Sarah HaugheySpecial to The ExaminerOctober 12, 2010 SAN FRANCISCO - The South of Market area is returning to its high-tech status a decade after the dot-com crash, with large technology companies leading the real estate charge. The big draw to the area for companies such as Google, Twitter and Dolby is the buildings themselves, according to real estate agents. Former warehouses were swept up in the late 1990s by Internet companies and startups, but the land grabs stalled when the technology sector took a hit in the early 2000s. Now tech companies are looking

SoMa Nightclub For Sale Without a Full Liquor License October 12th, 2010 SoMa Nightclub For Sale Without a Full Liquor License This isn't exactly a diamond in the rough... But a "newly remodeled" nightclub in an area of SoMa without any residences nearby is up for grabs for a mere $150,000. The lease is $7,400, there's a 200+ capacity, but the catch is, they've only got a beer and wine license, so you're looking at a big up-front expenditure before this can actually be, you know, a nightclub. http://www.gregorygarver.com Cruise Ships Cheaper than SF Rents: Not that we'd expect cruise ship... September 26th, 2008 Not that we'd expect cruise ship rent to consistently beat solid-ground prices in San Francisco, but in at least one instance, it does. At a cost per day of $31.53 on a 19-day cruise on the Norwegian Sun, maybe luxury cruise ships are a viable option for the exodus of folks who can't afford to stay. UPDATE: Just Kidding! No Embarcadero Halloween after all?: Seems the Examiner may have flubbed... September 26th, 2008 Seems the Examiner may have flubbed that Halloween Embarcadero story. According to SF Gate blog City Insider, the mayor's office is citing some "crossed wires" over the whole thing. Oct. 31 is Friday, and Sunday Streets is called Sunday Streets for a reason. To be fair, though, the mayor's spokesman wouldn't say the paper was "wrong" to say that Gavin said they were planning it. Huh?
