san francisco: Is the Fairmont Hotel really for sale or just testing the water? - 06/15/11 04:24 PM
Is the Fairmont Hotel really for sale or just testing the water? With so many comparable hotels on the market (and no list price) you have to wonder. Photo: Pargon/Flickr Fairmont Hotel Goes Up For Sale, But Tonga Room May Be Around for Quite a Bit Longer It seems like it's been years that we've been talking about the possible demise of the Tonga Room (it has). We've followed the ups and downs of a developer's plans to raze the rear section and tower portion of the building and destroy the great and glorious temple of Tiki that is

san francisco: 34th America’s Cup Race: A-Cup coming to SF: Rhode Island Feeling Slightly Soiled - 01/08/11 03:39 PM
34th America’s Cup Race: A-Cup coming to SF: Rhode Island Feeling Slightly Soiled “Larry Ellison on the Joystick” Photo Credit: Sail World So yes, it’s on. San Francisco was officially anointed the venue for the 34th America’s Cup. Not that Team Ellison had much choice. Rhode Island gracefully exited last week, not prepared to complete an offer in the short time frame they had to work out a bid, perhaps unable to shake off the nagging sense they were being used. Possibly someone noticed that Valencia, the site of the last race and a spectacular purpose-built racing facility, had dropped

san francisco: Take a Trip Through Civic Center History - http://MrSanFrancisco.net - 01/08/11 03:34 PM
Time Travel: Take a Trip Through Civic Center History January 6th, 2011 credit: Bancroft Library, Jesse B. Cooke Collection via Up from the Deep The beginning of a new year is as good a time as any for a field trip through San Francisco history and this morning the folks at Up from the Deep took a trip through a long-gone piece of Civic Center: Marshall Square. The plaza once connected Market Street to City Hall Ave (likewise long-gone at this point) and was the original home of the Pioneer Monument that now sits on Fulton Street between the Public Library’s Main Branch

san francisco: Google vs. Microsoft... Does your mail have a "G" in it? - 01/06/11 12:41 AM
Am I missing something here? "Microsoft 59 million VS Google 21 million. Almost 3x the cost...... I'd be investigating the finances of some of the Department of Interior" Seriously... I'm sure there is a good use for the extra 38 million dollars, if those figures are accurate (though I doubt Google could complete the job for THAT cheap). Besides, I would trust GOOG and its security over MSFT. It appears many people have yet to discover Google Chrome. Sounds like Susan Braden deserves a pat on the back... I mean really, Google will produce a better, more secure

Pearl Harbor Day - San Francisco The Attack on Pearl Harbor or Bombing of Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack on the United States naval base on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. It was launched on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 (Hawaii time) by the Empire of Japan's Carrier Striking Task Force against the U.S. Pacific Fleet and other US armed forces stationed at the harbor and also on the other side of Oahu. The attack spurred the U.S. into entering World War II on the following day and officially started the Pacific War. If you're looking for Pearl Harbor Day

san francisco: Caught the SF Playhouse production of "Freddy & Me" - 12/02/10 04:16 AM
Caught the SF Playhouse production of "Freddy & Me," Sunday night. The one man show written and performed by Bryan White was unique and entertaining. The premise is how Wes Craven’s sequels of the "Freddy Kruger" films affected one man's personal life and thoughts. The sometime intense but humorous dialog brought memories of Edward Albee (Who's afraid of Virginia Wolf, The Zoo Story) style. With some audience participation and piano interludes, the 70 minutes show was fun for all. The skillful direction of Nicholas Pappas brought it all together.

san francisco: Florida’s Gay Adoption Ban Crumbled November 21st, 2010 Saturday is National Adoption Day. - 11/24/10 01:56 AM
Florida’s Gay Adoption Ban Crumbled November 21st, 2010 Saturday is National Adoption Day. This year, Martin Gill is free to mark the day as the official father of two foster children he’s been raising since a caseworker dropped the boys — a feverish baby and his wary 4-year-old brother, both riddled with ringworm — on his North Miami doorstep six years ago.A year after the boys arrived, Gill petitioned to adopt them. And that’s when the wait began. Gill was a trusted foster parent who had cared for six children since he was licensed in 2002 — that number is now

san francisco: Prop 19... 215... Oh the IRONY, irony, irony... Pot Smokers Not Actually Making It to the Polls? - 11/07/10 05:11 PM
Pot Smokers Not Actually Making It to the Polls? The LA Times blog reports that, via preliminary exit poll data, "only about 1 voter in 10 said that his or her main motivation to vote in this election was Prop. 19." Most voters polled were mainly there to vote for governor, with 1 in 4 saying they cared about the Boxer-Fiorina race. True, younger voters (under 40) were slightly more likely to say that Prop 19 mattered to them. Updates on the "semi-official" State Election Results page won't start for another half hour or so. UPDATE: The Chron is calling this

The Sit/Lie Proponents Win, Prop L Passes; Prop G, Changing the Way Muni Drivers Are Paid, Also Passes November 4th, 2010 sit-lie-vid.jpg Measure L, the Sit/Lie law, looks to have passed with 53% of the city voting yes to outlaw sitting or lying on sidewalks between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sure, the whole issue of enforcement (which will likely be driven by area businesses, as this proposition was driven by Haight Street merchants), remains to be seen. But there you have it, folks. S.F. is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to sidewalks. Proposition

I buy a lot more groceries.” There you have it: the so-called prominent life of the Internet rock star.

Pier 70 - Developers Still on the Fence October 5th, 2010 Developers have just six weeks, until Nov. 18, to decide whether to chase Pier 70. That is not a lot of time to develop a vision for a 2.5 million-square-foot project of mind-boggling complexity. And quite a few potential builders are still on the fence about whether to respond to the Port of San Francisco’s request for qualifications. Here is what some of them are saying.
