What Does Your Chamber of Commerce Do for You? - 10/20/07 12:37 AM

One of my first acts as a new business owner was to join the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce (GACC) http://www.abqchamber.com/.  I joined with no expectations beyond being learning and being part of a network of business people. Like so many others who join the chamber I, also was seeking knowledge.
Time and a frequent question from friends and acquaintances: encourage me to focus on what it means to be a member of the GACC. "What does the chamber (Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce) do for you? they ask. It is a question that reminds me of President … (8 comments)

Albuquerque, New Mexico is a great place to live. The almost 450 thousand people who live in the city can give you many reasons to support this statement. Albuquerque's Top Picks, and now they have another - the environment.
In 2006, Mayor Martin Chavez and the city of Albuquerque beat several other cities from around the world to receive top recognition for water sustainability. In addition, the mayor and the city also beat 90 other cities around the nation for the number 1 spot as the greenest United States city: http://www.albuquerquegreen.com/.

God Calls From a Hot Air Balloon - 10/10/07 02:30 PM
During balloon fiesta time in Albuquerque, NM, it is not unusual to step out your front door to hear and see a hot air balloon hovering overhead. But what are the odds of discovering that the balloon is being piloted by friend or an acquaintance and is so close that you can talk to each other?
This morning I had one such one-in-a-million encounter. I stepped out of my house to go to the letter box and heard a balloon nearby. I looked up and saw it hovering low over my neighbor's house. I waved as I usually do to the … (10 comments)

Of Fairs, Fiestas and This Time of Year - 10/04/07 10:00 PM
Carole Provenzale's beautifully illustrated post  Fun at The Fair: Bellmore, Long Island, New York/A Feng Shui Consultants' Play Time! reminded me of my own New Mexico State Fair 2007 experience that I described elsewhere and made me aware that she and I have something in common. I too, like this time of year with its fairs and fiestas and try to visit as many as possible.
Our New Mexico State Fair ended two weeks ago. As always, it was delightful. It presented lots of photo opportunities, but in writing about it, I chose to focus on my friend's quilting achievement. I was very pleased to have a friend who … (7 comments)

Hitch a Ride on a Hot Air Balloon in Albuquerque, New Mexico - 10/04/07 08:44 PM

I wrote the post below last year to introduceAlbuquerque, New Mexico's annual international event and to celebrate my very first ride in a hot air balloon.
I was very pleasantly surprised with the calm and peacefulness of the ride. From start to finish, from take off to landing, it was like floating on a cloud. Reflecting on that flight, it is difficult to reconcile it with yesterday's tragic events relating to a balloon flight. Of course, on a calm uneventful flight, we tend to forget how really frail our balloon vessels are. I wrote:Our annual 9-day balloon fiesta event in Albuquerque, … (4 comments)
