The 2009 Tour de Lafayette is another geat reason as to why to live in Lafayette Square.  The Tour de Lafayette  is more than just a bike race.  It is a community event that showcases Lafayette Square and its Victorian Painted Ladies as the premier St. Louis neighborhood.  It is also an event that allow neighbors to mix and mingle and highlights the strength of the local business community in Lafayette Square.  To the community volunteers, local business supporters, and race organizers, I just wanted to offer my congratulations for another successful Tour de Lafayette cycling event.

Lafayette Square is set to play host to the Tour de Lafayette which is the first stage of the 2009 Gateway Cup.  Professional cycling teams will compete in races of various lengths on a flat, open course around Lafayette Park with the excitement building as the cyclist make the harrowing 90 degree turns at the four corners of Lafayette Park.  The first race starts at 3 p.m. with the last race scheduled for approximately 9:30 p.m. under artificial lights.

Well, this week St. Louis plays host to the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.  The game will start with the momentous words "Let's Play Ball."  Now, for baseball fans, these words signal the start of the game and precede the first pitch.  However, for our furry friends, these words mean something entirely different to our furry friends.

Congratulations to the Arts Council of Lafayette Park, Linda Skinner, and all of the community volunteers who made the first installment of the 2009 Movies in the Park series - Spiderman - a great success. It is estimated that over 700 people attended the event on a spectacular Saturday night in Lafayette Park.
This year's movies are intended to raise awareness and funds for local charitable organization.  This movie benefited Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri.

lafayette square: Urban Renewal - From Hospital to Home - The Story of City Hospital No. 1 (Lafayette Square - St. Louis, Missouri) - 06/06/09 11:55 PM

In 1909, the City of St. Louis started construction on City Hospital No. 1.  From 1912 to 1985, City Hospital No. 1 served as the primary general hospital for the City of St. Louis.  In 1985, City Hospital closed its doors. 
From 1985 to 2005, the hospital remained vacant and continued a slow deterioration.  In early 2000, Gilded Age and its principals led a concerted effort to save this city landmark from demolition.  In 2006, the first residents moved into the building.  The building was completed in early 2007 and now stands home to 104 residential condominiums known as the Georgian.
