social networking: Stop Annoying Your Facebook Connections - Use SeeMyListings.com to Place Your Listings on Your Profile Page - 11/02/09 01:00 AM
The Marketing Machine - Annoying your Friends, Family and Other Members of Your Social Network
Social networking sites such as Facebook can be great tools for keeping in touch with members of your sphere of influence.  Keeping your friends and family informed of your professional interests is an appropriate use of social networking sites.  However, there is a fine line between sharing your professional insights and experiences on social networking sites and using social networking sites as an advertising and marketing machine.  For those new to social networking sites, it is easy to take the wrong approach to social networking by blasting your listing information repeatedly … (129 comments)

social networking: Social Networking Sites - So Many Choices So Little Time - You Can't Be Everywhere So Where Should You Be - 06/30/09 03:01 PM
When it comes to social networking, it seems like we are all lemmings.  I mean we hear that LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter generate leads so we follow the pack and dive right in.  Now, I am not saying that I necessarily disagree with the choice of social networking sites.  I have an active presence on each of these websites and they do generate business opportunities and leads.  However, my question is:  Why did you pick these sites?
For me, the answer is pretty simple.  I joined LinkedIn when a customer summoned me.  I joined Facebook when a family member sent me … (111 comments)

social networking: Website Review - Assetize.com - From Domain Names to Social Media Accounts, Cybersquatting is Still Alive and Well - 06/28/09 05:46 PM

Recently, Facebook.com offered vanity names for its accounts.  It prompted a gold rush or land grab type euphoria among tech savvy speculators who registered names with lightning speed.
Like domain names a few years back, cybersquatters are back and registering names on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites is now big business.
Now, as technology changes, speculators and other business opportunists fill the void.  There is a nasceant market for the buying and selling of social media names.  Now, I wouldn't characterize all such transactions as cybersquatting.  I don't see a problem with registering a Twitter account name such as … (2 comments)

social networking: Social Media Experts - Do Real Estate Professionals Really Need Marketing Consultants to Teach Us How to Effecitvely Use Social Networking Sites? - 06/27/09 03:19 PM
The National Association of Realtors and Missouri Association of Realtors had an interesting market comment on the use of social media.  It did a very good job describing the rise in the popularity of social media to market and sell real estate:
Many real estate brokers and agents are looking to "social networking" programs such as Facebook or Twitter to turn their business around.  (A recent NAR member profile indicates that more than one-third of all Realtors are using social networking sites and that seventeen percent regularly use blogs, RSS feeds and podcasts.)
It is really no surprise that one-third of … (67 comments)

social networking: The Great Debate - Is Social Media a Waste of Time?... My Answer "Yes...It's a BIG Waste of Time" - 06/23/09 09:59 PM
Recently, I received a telephone call that led to a lengthy discussion about real estate and the use of technology to market and sell homes.  The caller had read my ActiveRain blog entitled "The Lafayette Report" and had a pretty good grasp of my passionate views on the use of technology to market and sell real estate.  In fact, if you aren't committed to the idea that blogging is good for business, the fact that he read my blog and called me is really what it is all about - that is, it is all about new introductions, great conversations, and developing … (203 comments)

social networking: Social Networks are Social, Right? Why Place Obstacles in the Way of Communication, Interaction, Networking and Referrals? - 06/19/09 07:46 AM
SOCIAL MEDIA IS ABOUT COMMUNICATION AND INTERACTION
Yesterday, I ran into two examples where real estate professionals placed obstacles in the way of customers, colleagues and/or readers who attempted to use the social networks to contact the members.  It appears that these agents didn't recognize the simple fact that social networks such as ActiveRain, LinkedIn, and Facebook are based on communication and interaction.  When you place obstacles that impair interaction, you limit communication and defeat the power of social networks - namely, networking.

Here are four recent examples:

social networking: Social Networking Overload - How to Manage 50 Social Networking Sites with 1-Click Using Ping.fm - 03/06/09 05:03 PM

Do you feel overloaded with the weight and time consumed with updating your social networks?  There is a simple 1-click solution - Ping.fm.
The Problem...When it comes to managing social networks, it is difficult to stay active in more than 2-3 social networks at a time.  Often, we gravitate to 2-3 sites and ignore the rest.  A major part of the problem is that participating in most social networking sites includes the repetitive task of "updating your status."  If you participate in more than 2 or 3 social networking sites, this can be a time consuming and repetitive task.  It goes something like … (21 comments)
