Along with a slew of other benefits, homeownership also allows a lot of saving on taxes. The National Association of Realtors lists lots of ways to save, including in areas such as mortgage interest deductions, capital gains, and credits for energy-efficient upgrades*. 
The savings aren't only limited to wealthy homeowners: the NAR reports that the 91% of homeowners who receive reductions have an income of less than $200,000 a year.
