It was pretty good. I didn't find it new or groundbreaking, but it was a good refresher. The premise of Simon's book is that all great leaders and companies have a big, clear WHY of what they are doing. This 'Why' attracts other people that identify with it. For example, here at Glenn

edmonton alberta real estate investments: When Is The Alberta Economy Going To Kick It Into Gear Anyways? - 12/18/10 06:21 PM
Pretty darn soon, judging by the Suncor, Total $1.8 Billion Oil Sands deal....What was originally thought to be a cyclical downturn, turned into a much deeper and widespread recession. However, the turning point falls in step with the cyclical upswing that was earlier projected. From the Billions of dollars that has been sat on in Alberta, we can start to see signs of life. 2012-2016 will be another growth period, although more tempered than the boom and 'bust' you've seen before. I suppose you can't accurately call it a 'bust' if it does, in-fact, keep going. The meat of this article

It's hard to imagine a labour shortage with unemployment at 6.6% but apparently there is one looming around the corner.Alberta braces for next labour squeeze - "A rebound in the oil patch is sparking fears of a labour shortage like the one that led to sky-high wages and mass importing of skilled tradespeople ...." “We are about to start running into, believe it or not, another labour shortage,” “It is going to be significant again,” says Brian Vaasjo, president of Capital Power Inc. As the need for labour increases so will the need for rental units as in-migration increases. A look

edmonton alberta real estate investments: This and That - 01/08/10 01:46 AM
What a decade. It started with Y2K and ended with a global recession. It seems 2010 is bringing new optimism in it's wake and the news is reflecting that. Alberta poised to lead in growth - "Following a sharp economic contraction this year, Alberta's economy is forecast to be one of Canada's fastest growing provinces in 2010. Scotiabank economist Alex Koustas predicts that in 2010, the energy province's GDP will grow by 2.9% after shrinking 2.6% this year. Only B.C., at 3%, is forecast to grow at a faster rate. Come 2011, Alberta will be firmly planted ahead of other provinces,

Employers not appealing to Gen X and Yers - "The labour market in Edmonton and Alberta is tight as I've ever seen it in 10 years in this industry, and if you can't attract this next generation of upcoming leaders, the Gen X and Gen Y, then you as an organization are going to have significant challenges moving forward." Mike Corbett, vice-president, Edmonton, at David Aplin Recruiting. Poll results buoy Alberta minister - "Fifty-seven per cent of respondents in The Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey said there are more benefits than drawbacks to the oil sands, while 35 per cent reported the

edmonton alberta real estate investments: Don't Be In The 80% - 02/02/09 12:27 AM
I used to love listening to CBC Radio but after Morningside's Peter Gzowski, Vicki Gabereau and of course Finkleman's 45's left, my heart did too.Instead I've tuned into BBC Radio. Recently heard on BBC Radio 5 live 'Phone In Programme' discussing the world economic recession:Caller: 'Thanks to my financial adviser I now have a small fortune.'Presenter: That's very interesting, tell me more.Caller: Pause……………..Caller: 'Mind you, I started off with a large fortune.'Just a little joke to put a smile on your face.Remember Pareto's law? 80% of people are frozen (in this case) fear, while 20% are out there investing (in action). The

edmonton alberta real estate investments: Take A Look At Edmonton Now - 09/06/08 05:07 AM
Sometimes when you have a good thing you take it for granted and often treat it quite badly. As I type that sentence I don't know how many pop songs are flitting through my head. It's quite a common theme. We do it to cities too. Let's take Edmonton it's had it's booms and busts over the years. Many complain about traffic, cost of living, lack of service, increasing taxes and house prices flattening out. Well if you look at all those things objectively they are signs of a great economy. Don't scoff. Traffic - increased traffic means population growth. The

edmonton alberta real estate investments: On The Road To Being A Y.A.W.N - 08/18/08 05:34 PM
*I drive a fuel efficient mini-car.*I don't buy brand name clothing nor do I want to.*Our monthly living expenses are ridiculously low by choice.*All our expendable income goes into investments.*I tithe a percent of my income to help children in Africa.Looks like we are on the road to being Y.A.W.N.s (Young And Wealthy but Normal). Why are they called Y.A.W.N.s? Because they are boring. Un-sexy as they sound, if everyone did this debt would be erased, people would be happier and the world would be a better place - especially if we all gave more to charity. The basics

edmonton alberta real estate investments: How To Invest And Profit In A Falling Real Estate Market - 07/29/08 07:44 PM
Todd has had another article published with Nu Wire investor. If you can see past all the bad news and media hype there are many, many excellent investments to be bought in Alberta now and even if you go further afield in the USA. This article is a very basic outline on how to buy a good property in a falling market - I should clarify that Alberta is a buyer's market not a falling one! "There is no doubt that it is more difficult to profit from a falling real estate market in the short term. However, some of

edmonton alberta real estate investments: Oil Fuels Calgary's Office Space - 07/24/08 01:21 AM
"The energy sector, and the related services to it, are the prime drivers of office space demand in the downtown core without question," "We're also seeing growth in the financial services sector as well. And we're seeing a lot of interest as the capital budgets continue to increase for not only conventional, but also oilsands related development, and the staggering budgets for those projects. The financial services sector is also increasingly looking, from frankly around the world, (to locate) branches here and increasing the size of the offices they have here." edmonton alberta real estate investments: Alberta Wealth Sets Prices In Okanagan - 06/22/08 08:33 PM
When Albertans are looking for a recreational property they often go to British Columbia. The province's overflow of wealth has increased prices in the Okanagan area so much that until now there was multiple offers and double digit increases on recreational properties. Now that Alberta is cooling down so is this area."Alberta buyers are a very important part of our market, and not just southern Alberta, but northern Alberta as well," Rob Shaw, Vernon Realtor and director of Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board (OMREB)What that means is the beautiful Okanagan valley is also leveling out and becoming a buyer's market. edmonton alberta real estate investments: Getting Shaken Up - $1 Dollar Assumable - 05/15/08 07:25 PM
Even in a market with strong economic fundamentals there are plateaus. If you are aware when these plateaus come they won't alarm you, in fact you welcome them because they create excellent buying opportunities. In Edmonton we have gone from extreme seller's market to a strong buyer's market.I found a property that can be assumed with qualifying in Edmonton the other day. I like this for 2 reasons:1. It's good marketing. It will attract buyers out of curiosity just like you - who will click here to see what it is about.2. It shows there are a lot of motivated sellers

edmonton alberta real estate investments: So It's Not Just An Edmonton Thing - 04/18/08 12:25 AM
Sales are falling across Canada while listings are surging in western Canada. Could it be the record cold winter where people just weren't interested in checking what was on the market? I think in Edmonton it's a lot of investors testing the water to see what the property they bought last year is actually worth or what they pull out with. “Canada's six-year housing market boom is officially over. Aside from a few choice prairie locales, sales are melting faster than this year's snowpack,” Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Nesbitt BurnsI'm not sure I agree with that blanket statement

edmonton alberta real estate investments: Oilsands Get Big Bucks This Year - 02/28/08 08:16 PM
In Alberta where investment is always spoken of in BILLIONS not MILLIONS - this year will stand out as the year we beat all manufacturing across Canada for the first time. Philip Cross, Statistics Canada economistThis money isn't invested "willy-nilly" with no idea of ROI - extensive research is done; every possibility factored including Royalty reviews, Kyoto accords and oil prices. It is long term thinking with an eye on the future. So if all this investment is going into a tiny little area
