southern pines: Moore County, NC clamps down on development - 03/30/08 03:10 PM
A six month moratorium on development throughout the western end of Moore County was been implemented and now three of the county's towns are considering moratoriums for reasons of their own.
SOUTHERN PINES, NC is contemplating a freeze on development, ostensibly to be imposed so that the town's Comprehensive Land Use Plan can be updated. But the issue was suddenly thrust to the front burner when concerns were expressed about how the would-be-developers of Pine Needles Village tract might supposedly react to the Town Council's rejection of their plans. This appears to be a pre-emptive strike.

The Southern Pines Police Department has reported that "so far this year, overall crime is down 30% from the previous year." Break-ins and larcenies are down even more. The figures include crime statistics form the first two months of 2007 and 2008. March figures are not yet available.
There were 74 total crimes in the business area during the first two months of 2007, according to Police. That number has decreased to 50 this year. Also down are break-ins, burglaries and robberies. Burglaries declined 60% from 10 this time last year to 4 this year. Larcenies involving motor vehicles are down 75% … (0 comments)

Recently our local newspaper reported... "Sewage Backup Floods Home"
The story was about an unpleasant surprise awaiting a homeowner returning from a business trip. As he unlocked the door and attempted to enter his home, he struggled to force his way in, discovering his home had been flooded by raw sewage.
"It was sewer from one end of the house to the other" the homeowner said. Dishes, appliances, antiques, furniture, and family heirlooms were all ruined."
Two weeks later county work crews have been on site gathering information and examining the system. Baseboards, flooring and carpets inside the home have been ripped up. … (0 comments)
