gary lirette: This is the thread that developed when my iPhone died: Sandpoint Blog - 07/20/11 10:52 PM

Gary - My iPhone passed away yesterday. Old gurl was almost three years old (that's 120 in cell phone years). She had been running slower lately, and been showing signs of her age. Her screen is now a white background with a group of straight lines on one side. I will miss you gurl. RIP.
Cathy - My sincere condolences... however, a new girl will come along soon and, while you'll never forget your first, it will ease the pain.
Gary - I know, but she was such a hard worker, multi-tasking, surfing the web with me, and...let's be honest. … (5 comments)

gary lirette: Wine of the Week = Nicholas Cole GraEagle Bordeaux Blend at Yoke's: Sandpoint Blog - 06/29/11 10:22 AM
At Yoke's Fresh Market in Ponderay near Sandpoint there is a sense of pride in being the top regional wine-selling store. Admittedly, it is only my part-time job, but the wines carried are stellar. One of those is the Nicholas Cole GraEagle.
This wine has a special story.
In December, Nicholas Cole Cellars founder/owner Mike Neuffer sent out a brief message explaining that due to pressing family issues, he would be "placing an indefinite hiatus on winemaking and future vintages of Nicholas Cole and GraEagle wines."
Neuffer moved to Walla Walla a decade ago to pursue a winemaking dream. He planted … (1 comments)

gary lirette: Northside Fire Department near Sandpoint in Bonner County saving lives: Sandpoint Blog - 06/22/11 03:28 AM
Last night my girlfriend called me to tell me she was on a call. She is part of Northside Fire Department and the call was a breached large gas line.
An excavation crew had punctured the large pipe in spite of having a map. Maps are only so accurate.
O'Hally is a super hero, but so are all the firefighters in her crew.
She told me the gas was coming out so intensely it blew hair back. While talking to her on the phone, the best description of the sound I can come up with is 'screaming.'
They had been on … (2 comments)

gary lirette: National Day of Prayer in Farmin Park, Sandpoint, Idaho: Sandpoint Blog - 05/06/11 10:01 PM
National Day of Prayer was Thursday. It was held in Farmin Park at noon for a time of prayer. Many groups from area churches were there along with live music. Pastor Craig was on the 1400 am KSPT radio at noon sharing prayers over the airwaves. The rain held off and the turnout was great. Nice to see so many people in town on a Thursday for a good event.

Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene, First Baptist Church of Sandpoint, Sandpoint Assembly of God and many other churches were represented there along with individuals just wanting to participate … (1 comments)

gary lirette: BIKING & HIKING GUIDE for SANDPOINT IN NORTH IDAHO: Sandpoint Blog - 05/03/11 10:15 AM
So, there are some trails that are not exactly legal, like the one off Brisboys and Lakeshore, or the Pend Oreille Bay Trail. Why go on one of those when there are so many great ones to choose from in North Idaho?
Here are two great trails that are perfectly Kosher: North Idaho Bikeways - Sandpoint Biking Trail Map ...and Dover Bay has nine miles of paved trails
Mountain bikers and hikers have long known how totally outrageous North Idaho is for the sports for some time. But in 2005, when the NORBA National Championship was held at Schweitzer Mountain, the … (0 comments)

gary lirette: Sweetie & Sinatra - The story of the wonderful geese at Arlo's in Sandpoint: Sandpoint Blog - 05/02/11 07:37 PM
Nine years ago Lisa and Tom Guscott gave up the corporate life in New York and started their new life in Sandpoint, Idaho. Theirs was a storybook romance. Lisa had been a model and Tom worked the corporate world. They came here looking for a simpler life. The early years were fun and trying, Lisa with a new baby and the two of them starting a new life opening Arlo's Ristorante right next to the Cedar Street Bridge on Sandpoint's main drag, First Avenue.  They originally opened the restaurant with Lisa's brother, Chris Arlo, but soon the couple took over the … (5 comments)

gary lirette: Sometimes you just have a good week: Sandpoint Blog - 05/01/11 10:50 PM
Have you ever been so busy you wonder if you are actually accomplishing your real goals? I have had a good and busy week.
Last week I added another million dollars in listings, and will add another mil next week. On Monday I will be finalizing an offer for a home in the $800,000 range. The client found me through my internet presence, which is considerable.
I had a very good radio show last week, and the guests were pertinent and entertaining. You can read about them in my previous blogs.
I also had a very good cooking demo at Yoke's … (5 comments)

gary lirette: A Special Wine Tasting in Coeur d'Alene: Sandpoint Blog - 04/26/11 10:36 PM
I have this great part-time job as Wine Steward at Yoke's in Sandpoint. This is the #1 wine store in Yoke's chain and I am very proud of the selections there. In my book Passion for Wine published in 1997, I claimed that Washington state wines were the best in the world. I am not ashamed of that claim, though I was widely ridiculed then. In the last decade, the Wines from Washington have garnered more awards and ratings above 90 points than any other region on the globe.
While to a large part of the nation, we in North Idaho … (0 comments)

gary lirette: Cooking and Wine Demo at Yoke's Today: Sandpoint Blog - 04/22/11 12:03 PM
Today I will be presenting three great wines at Yoke's plus Banana Cake and finally a Strawberrry Sabayon.
The wines are two of the great Columbia Crest Grand Estates new releases: Amitage and Moscato. The third we are making the Sabayon with: Barefoot Bubbly Moscato Spumante.

I do this every Friday from 2:30 - 5pm. It's a great chance to try some new wines and see how some chef's dishes are prepared.
Since we are primarily sampling dessert, two of the wines are dessert-like in quality. Plus, we teach you the proper sequence when drinking wine with sweets.
The third … (1 comments)

gary lirette: Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper helping to keep our waters pristine: Sandpoint Blog - 04/19/11 08:11 PM

Anyone who has listened to my North Idaho Arts & Adventure radio show knows I have a special place in my heart for Lake Pend Oreille. We all do. Time after time I have heard the story about how when first approaching Sandpoint crossing the Long Bridge, a love affair with this place has kindled from virtually every person who has ever been here. I have had the Clark Fork-Pend Oreille Conservancy on the show several times. We all have the same goal. Preserve our majestic and pristine clear waters and forests.
Today Jennifer Ekstrom of the Lake Pend Oreille … (0 comments)

Rich and I are hosting Yappy Hour for the Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS). This is an event that was started in order to have a social hour for owners and their dogs. Here is an article published in the Bonner County Daily Bee about last year's party: click here. They reported over 600 cars in the vintage car parade.

gary lirette: Sandpoint Music celebrates their Grand Opening April 8th: Sandpoint Blog - 04/07/11 02:43 AM
After losing the former Sandpoint Music, to get quality guitars and equipment, we now found ourselved having to drive to Coeur d'Alene. Sure, Nieman's Florist sells some stuff, and you can get a few things related to playing music at other places, but c'mon, we need a music store in Sandpoint.
Last Tuesday I interviewed Dan Wallace of the new incarnation of Sandpoint Music. The old business had moved out of downtown, and not long afterwards went out of business.
Dan carrys a great selection of quality guitars, amps, and everything I was hoping for in a music store.
They are … (0 comments)

gary lirette: Sandpoint City Beach - Early Spring: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 04/01/11 12:55 AM
Wanting to get away from it all, I drove just one minute from downtown Sandpoint to the Sandpoint City Beach. While the park will become the center of town life this summer, right now, while the temperatures are in the high-50s approaching 60 degrees, there is a certain silent solace overlooking Lake Pend Oreille.
Here are the pics and video:

gary lirette: Sandpoint Blog: An interview with entrepeneur Jaclin Smith - a fascinating lady - 01/07/11 04:48 PM
Last Thursday I enjoyed a fascinating interview with Jaclin Smith. No, not the one from Charlie's Angels. That one is spelled with a ‘y' in the name. This one is a prolific builder and entrepreneur, parent, world traveler, and philanthropist.
I met Ms. Smith while volunteering to help with a Christmas dinner for deserving women hosted at her fantastic residence, Chateau Jaclin, put on by Ms. Smith and counselor Cyndee Darby of Sandpoint.
Over half a century ago, she arrived with her family in Sandpoint, and this year her family celebrated her father's 59th year of his practice as a doctor … (0 comments)
