north idaho: St. Patrick's Day - A Great Celebration: Sandpoint Blog - 03/14/11 01:17 PM
In a quick search for St. Patrick's Day parades on the www.st-patricks-day.com website, I noted that there were none in North Idaho. What! I may not be remembering my history well, but don't the Irish have this thing for potatoes? Where are the best potatoes from? It just seems a natural that with both places beginning with the letter "I" and having this potato connection, seems we in Idaho should have something going on for St. Paddy's Day. So, okay, there are some things going on down south in Boise and Treasure Valley, and the Idaho potato commission has some

north idaho: Another record season for Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 04/18/10 07:07 PM
Schweitzer Has Record Snow Two Years in a Row! Another record ski season for 2009, even with the difficult economy, and 2010 beat last year. What a great season Schweitzer had in 2009, but in news reported by the Bonner County Daily Bee April 18, 2010, this year was even better with a 7.5% increase in visits. 217,000 skier visits marked the 2009-10 season even though only 177 inches fell on the mountain. Part of that can be attributed to proper grooming, and the snow making capabilities that new, state-of-the-art equipment provided. Read more below. Weather prognosticators predicted a warmer winter

north idaho: More pics of downtown Sandpoint for Country Living Magazine: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 03/27/10 05:50 PM
So, as I wrote in my previous blog, besides being featured in a 6-page article in Where to Retire magazine, Country Living has asked me for photos of Sandpoint. They specifically wanted Main Street, but I let them know our main place of happenings is First Avenue. So, I took these pics this morning and sent them in to their New York headquarters. You get a sneak peek at them first. Cedar Street Bridge on First and Cedar Farmin Park at Main and Oak in Sandpoint, Idaho First Avenue in Sandpoint, Idaho Historic Panida Theater on First

north idaho: Sandpoint & National Housing Data - March 24, 2010: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 03/24/10 12:47 PM
As recently as last summer, fall, and winter the news pundits touted the apparent recovery of our national housing market. With the various government programs feeding the market, such as first time home buyer credits and loan amelioration programs, mainstream media found no end to positive spins of news stories. While these special tax credits and various programs have been extended and helped the lower end of the market, the improved numbers were not so improved at at, and these programs are losing their effect. Now, we are seeing the numbers in the housing market turn down once again. For the

north idaho: Is it getting harder to be a Sandpoint real estate agent, or is it just me? Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 02/11/10 04:29 PM
For years, I was one of the few REALTORS that did REO in my area. There is only one REO specializing company, and I started locally with them. Short sales, bank repos, it all took a bit more skill than the rest of the agents in our market, and I finally decided to stop doing them. Still, every year about 25% of my sales were REO. Then the world fell apart. My friends Cindy Bond and Merry Brown Hayes have both related this is the hardest they have ever worked in real estate. I am not complaining. I had sales, was ranked

north idaho: Madcap Mardi Gras takes over Sandpoint, Idaho: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 02/06/10 10:14 AM
The first year I came to Sandpoint I was invited to putt-putt at the Downtown Golf Scramble. We had a blast. You golf on tiny courses set up at various businesses, several of which serve you cocktails, then end up at a restaurant where prizes for best round and such are handed out. It was a cold February day, and we finished at Ivano's. My team won 'Worst Dressed.' Another year my restaurant, Wigleys, was one of the vendors for the Mardi Gras Ball. I love the event. After all, I am from New Orleans. There are events that take place

north idaho: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog: Becoming Friends with your clients can be great, or not... - 02/05/10 08:10 AM
For quite some time I taught adults. One thing we always made clear: it is best to be professional in all cases. Here is an example I used: When dining out, or working with a close associate in a transaction, such as purchasing insurance, it is common for the shopper/diner to ask the question, "So, are you from here?" In Sandpoint, a town that has received numerous accolades and national press, this is perhaps the most common question. While the answer may seem simple, it is probable that we forget the proper answer. We forget who it is being served. We

north idaho: Real Estate Blog: www.SandpointID.net receiving awards and success: Gary Lirette, REALTOR - 01/27/10 12:20 PM
This morning, my website that I provide for my business as well as a community resource, received an award on www.Garden-Planters.com Here is the link for their awards page. While it may not seem that this is something a gardening site would consider, we have the only Farm & Foods Guide for our part of North Idaho. Our website gets over 12,000 hits a month, and informs on hundreds of varying subjects, providing, again, hundreds of pages, thousands of photos, videos, graphs, information, and more. The site promotes our town and North Idaho, and it is easy to navigate. Plus, it

north idaho: Sandpoint Idaho Real Estate Blog: Sandpoint is a community that doesn't give up - 01/09/10 01:12 PM
With the Sandpoint Winter Carnival beginning Thursday with the annual Taste of Sandpoint, we kick off our late winter season of happenings. One thing that was glaring this year was how many North Idaho communities dropped event after event. Every month I update the www.SandpointID.net/calendar.html events calendar. Unlike other calendars, I try to include other areas, such as Hayden, Priest Lake, and Schweitzer Mountain. As I updated from last year, I began to notice that other small towns, and even Schweitzer and Stoneridge Golf community were dropping annual music events and activities like crazy. I understand. Times are tough and revenues

north idaho: Too late now, but how much would a tunnel cost in lieu of the Sand Creek Byway - 01/09/10 12:25 PM
Just wondering how much a tunnel would have cost in lieu of the Sand Creek Byway. By no means is this scientific. Using the New Zealand Manapouri Second Tailrace Tunnel bid published by the Colorado School of Mines figure of $132,000,000 in 1998 dollars for the 10 km tunnel, I came up with the math. That would be $174,000,000 in 2009 dollars. The rock was old, about 13 million years. Our mountains are also old and have a similar geologic nature. Our byway is 2.1 miles. Let's see, one mile is about 1.6 kilometers. So, 3.38 x $17,400,000 per mile cost

north idaho: Christmas season a success for North Idaho businesses - 01/06/10 06:39 AM
Okay, so I don't have any hard data, but I am working with dozens of local businesses right now, so I believe i have the skinny. For the last several weeks I have been organizing the Sandpoint Winter Carnival. Part of that is putting together the Winter ArtTrek: 80 North Idaho artists displaying art at 17 locations in Sandpoint, Idaho as part of the Winter Carnival. Also, we have been putting together the new event called Shop Around Sandpoint. Add to that working closely with 15 restaurants for Dine Around Sandpoint (www.DineAroundSandpoint.com). I manage one of those restaurants every weekend -

north idaho: Sandpoint, Idaho: A great place to live - 12/22/09 06:04 AM
The Story of Sandpoint, North Idaho Sandpoint, North Idaho, Schweitzer Ski Resort, and Lake Pend Oreille gets a lot of attention, with a new article about to come out in Country Living magazine, and me, Gary Lirette, and Sandpoint recently featured in Where to Retire magazine. Now you want to know the inside story. In the last few years we have had literally dozens of articles, television shows, news reports, etc., that have touted our area as the paradise of the West. Sure, we have some of the same issues that most communities our size have to tackle, but the good far outpaces the bad. Tourism

Sandpoint Winter Carnival is a great way to celebrate the winter, with bonfires, rail jam, fireworks, great food, and so much more. Schweitzer Mountain puts on quite the show, and 2010 looks to be a fantastic repeat of the great fun and success Winter Carnival had in 2009. To see everything that happened last year, check out Sandpoint Winter Carnival-A look back on 2009. This year there are some new additions. One is Dine Around Sandpoint, offering discounts and other fun events like wine tastings and beer tastings, at some of Sandpoints finest dining establishments. There are prizes and

north idaho: Lakedance International Film Festival in Sandpoint, Idaho - Named to the Top 100 Film Festivals - 11/05/09 09:37 AM
Lakedance Film Festival has gone through some changes since its beginnings four years ago. Its founder, Trevor Greenfield, wanted to bring a world-class event to small-town Sandpoint, Idaho. In the first year, there was no major sponsor, and the event was in the red. For the previous two years, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort sponsored the film fest, and last year they went into the black, making a small profit for the first time. Schweitzer declined to be the backer this year, and Laser Image stepped in. Good timing too, because Lakedance was named to the Top 100 Film Festivals this year.
