Autumn of 2011 found Sandpoint, Idaho being voted America's Most Beautiful Small Town by Rand McNally, and in the winter of 2011/2012 Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort was named the Best Ski Resort of the Season by USA Today/Rand McNally.

I have hesitated to update this blog with an economic page due to the downturn in our national picture as well as local doldrums. In a meeting last fall with Mel Dick, former CFO of Coldwater Creek, and David Keyes, editor of the Bonner County Daily Bee, the question was asked of how many restaurants would go under before the next summer season. We were just firming up the plans for Dine Around Sandpoint. This one-month long promotion had radio and print advertising, and strategic internet marketing. For years, I was one of the few REALTORS that did REO in my area. There is only one REO specializing company, and I started locally with them. Short sales, bank repos, it all took a bit more skill than the rest of the agents in our market, and I finally decided to stop doing them.
Still, every year about 25% of my sales were REO.

People think of Sandpoint as a tourist town, and that is true. However, tourism ranks way below the other main employers. In order, our biggest employment sectors are manufacturing, government, education, and then tourism. So, while tourism provides a healthy boost to our economy, without producers such as Coldwater Creek, Quest Aircraft, Airtow, Lignetics, Thorne Research, Unicep Packaging, and Litehouse Foods, we would have far fewer high-paying jobs.
Our most recent addition is Smart Plugs: a green technology company that manufactures high-tech, cleaner burning spark plugs, and a combination catalytic converter/smart spark plug.

The first year I came to Sandpoint I was invited to putt-putt at the Downtown Golf Scramble. We had a blast. You golf on tiny courses set up at various businesses, several of which serve you cocktails, then end up at a restaurant where prizes for best round and such are handed out. It was a cold February day, and we finished at Ivano's. My team won 'Worst Dressed.'
Another year my restaurant, Wigleys, was one of the vendors for the Mardi Gras Ball.
I love the event. After all, I am from New Orleans.

For quite some time I taught adults. One thing we always made clear: it is best to be professional in all cases.
Here is an example I used:
When dining out, or working with a close associate in a transaction, such as purchasing insurance, it is common for the shopper/diner to ask the question, "So, are you from here?" In Sandpoint, a town that has received numerous accolades and national press, this is perhaps the most common question.

Okay, so I don't have any hard data, but I am working with dozens of local businesses right now, so I believe i have the skinny.
For the last several weeks I have been organizing the Sandpoint Winter Carnival. Part of that is putting together the Winter ArtTrek: 80 North Idaho artists displaying art at 17 locations in Sandpoint, Idaho as part of the Winter Carnival. Also, we have been putting together the new event called Shop Around Sandpoint. Add to that working closely with 15 restaurants for Dine Around Sandpoint (www.DineAroundSandpoint.com).

Yesterday, Tuesday December 17, 2009, my interviews were as diverse as the colors of the rainbow.
I host two radio shows: North Idaho Business and North Idaho Arts & Adventure. Both shows are broadcast, right after Rush, on KSPT 1400 AM in Sandpoint and KBFI 1450 AM in Bonners Ferry on Tuesdays. This is the fifth year I have been doing the shows and I have interviewed almost two hundred local leaders, artists, politicians, characters, and every walk of life in North Idaho.

With over 100 websites, there are few private individuals that can compare with my web presence. While in a company meeting, our broker, Jeff Bond, suggested that having YouTube videos would help a website's position in Google. So, using my tiny netbook, I put two videos on one of my sites right then and there.
This year those websites are on target to get over 450,000 hits. The websites range from pure real estate business, to art, community support, and a variety of other fields and interests, all about Sandpoint, North Idaho, and Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort.

Let's face it, REALTORs® have a reputation just hovering above used car salesmen. I don't mean that everyone thinks poorly of us, but we rank in opinion right around attorneys, politicians, and doctors. Weird that some of those professions used to be the most respected.
I believe that while we earn our daily bread from selling properties, it is also our job to promote and steward our towns and communities.
