This series of blog entries features the various seasons in and around Sandpoint, Idaho. Sandpoint, North Idaho, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, and Lake Pend Oreille have been featured in the national news repeatedly over the last several years. Autumn of 2011 found Sandpoint, Idaho being voted America's Most Beautiful Small Town by Rand McNally, and in the winter of 2011/2012 Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort was named the Best Ski Resort of the Season by USA Today/Rand McNally.

One of the final events for the Sandpoint Winter Carnival is the K-9 Keg Pull. Every shape and size of dog participates, and every age and type of owner urges them on. It is held in the alley beside Eichardt's Pub, and people cheer on the mutts and purebreds, as the dogs commune with one and other. It is billed as just possibly the most endearing event you'll ever attend, and this year didn't disappoint.

For the 37th Annual Sandpoint Winter Carnival hundreds of people gathered in Schweitzer Village to witness this Winter Carnival signature event where Schweitzer lit up the night with its annual torchlight parade and fireworks. A constellation of skier-powered torchlights wove their way down the mountain creating a cascade of fire trails ending with a bang with a grand fireworks show over the village and the snow-covered slopes.

Every year, Main Street right in front of my office at Tomlinson Sandpoint Sotheby's International Realty is closed off for one of the main events for Sandpoint Winter Carnival for the Rail Jam and Bonfire. Brent Sleeps handles the fire, and there is a DJ and plenty of skiers and onlookers.

sandpoint winter carnival: Bio-Luminesce Fire Dancers perform at Pend d'Oreille Winery for Sandpoint Winter Carnival: Sandpoint Blog - 01/14/11 11:39 PM
The Bio-Luminesce Firedancers have performed for the last five years at the Sandpoint Winter Carnival. They have always performed in the courtyard at Pend d'Oreille Winery. However, in the last two years they have attracted a crowd upwards of 200 people, so this year, the street was closed off. I was there tonight, and though I estimate there weren't more people this year, there were as many as previous years, and we all had a better view and more room. The winery was packed, the rain held off, and it was a good time had by all.

The Taste of Sandpoint started Sandpoint Winter Carnival with food and fun at the Sandpoint Events Center Thursday night. The Sandpoint Events Center at 515 Pine St. sat empty for years until being renovated just a few years ago.
The Sandpoint Events Center, otherwise known fondly in our community as "The 9th Grade Center" and "the old Sandpoint High School," was completely renovated by a local family. The historic character of the building was maintained and highlighted in the renovation, and this restored facility is a fabulous addition to the community. Sandpoint Winter Carnival Kicked off with the KPND Ski & Board Party at Trinity at City Beach, 58 Bridge St. last night with a surprising large crowd and good times had by all.
Trinity is one of the participating restaurants in the month-long Dine Around Sandpoint, and owner Justin Dick was on hand to make sure the ship sailed smoothly.

So, this is the 37th Sandpoint Winter Carnival. Like many I have volunteered in the past, and now run www.SandpointWinterCarnival.org to diplay how things went for the previous years. For the best pics of previous years, this is the site to visit.
This year features two new events: Skijoring at the Bonner County Fairgrounds both Saturday and Sunday and a Country Western Dinner & Hoedown from 5 p.m.-on at Trinity at City Beach. Longest Ski Hat in the World
Kicking off the Sandpoint Winter Carnival, Susan Moon and her REALTOR® colleagues from Tomlinson Sandpoint Sotheby's International Realty parade "The World's Longest Ski Hat" from the Cedar Street Bridge Jones Square.
