what to do in sandpoint: Seasons of Sandpoint, Idaho - A Photographic Journal: November 2011 - 02/20/12 06:14 PM
The next several blog entries will feature the various seasons in and around Sandpoint, Idaho. Sandpoint, North Idaho, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, and Lake Pend Oreille have been featured in the national news repeatedly over the last several years. Autumn of 2011 found Sandpoint, Idaho being voted America's Most Beautiful Small Town by Rand McNally, and in the winter of 2011/2012 Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort was named the Best Ski Resort of the Season by USA Today/Rand McNally.
Real Estate in Sandpoint has been on the rise approximately 7% a year for three years, much in part due to the decrease in pricing. … (1 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: Pend Oreille Arts Council – Supporting the Arts and so much more: Sandpoint Blog - 09/26/11 11:09 AM
I recently had Kim Brown Queen on my show North Idaho Arts & Adventure. I’ve known Kim since she first came to town and we interviewed her right after she took over the reins at POAC. By all accounts, Kim has done an outstanding job, and while there are other groups and organizations that support the arts, without POAC, I doubt Sandpoint would be the art town many consider us to be.
This was one of the first questions tackled by Kim.
Q – POAC is a strong force in promoting the arts in our area. There are other groups … (0 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: WINE OF THE WEEK - Steals and Deals: Sandpoint Blog - 07/15/11 03:55 PM

While many of the more spendy wines are fantastic, my goal, personally, is to find incredible wines rated 90 points or above that are mouth-watering and less than $10. Okay, this is not an easy task, but it is my goal.
This week I have chosen nine great wines either $10 or under, or within a buck or two of that benchmark.
Here they are:
Cinder Rosé - This Snake River Valley AVA wine has a winemaker who worked at Chateau Ste. Michelle to cut her teeth. Her style is, in my opinion, decidedly French, and her wines are top-notch. … (4 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: In spite of the rain, Sandpoint held its first Farmers Market: Sandpoint Blog - 05/07/11 11:42 PM
So, music was scheduled, but electronics and rain don't get along. Still, there was fresh bread and produce, bric-a-brac, and all sorts of sundries at the Sandpoint Farmers Market today.
Anyway, I showed up early and took some pics:

what to do in sandpoint: Sweetie & Sinatra - The story of the wonderful geese at Arlo's in Sandpoint: Sandpoint Blog - 05/02/11 07:37 PM
Nine years ago Lisa and Tom Guscott gave up the corporate life in New York and started their new life in Sandpoint, Idaho. Theirs was a storybook romance. Lisa had been a model and Tom worked the corporate world. They came here looking for a simpler life. The early years were fun and trying, Lisa with a new baby and the two of them starting a new life opening Arlo's Ristorante right next to the Cedar Street Bridge on Sandpoint's main drag, First Avenue.  They originally opened the restaurant with Lisa's brother, Chris Arlo, but soon the couple took over the … (5 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: A Special Wine Tasting in Coeur d'Alene: Sandpoint Blog - 04/26/11 10:36 PM
I have this great part-time job as Wine Steward at Yoke's in Sandpoint. This is the #1 wine store in Yoke's chain and I am very proud of the selections there. In my book Passion for Wine published in 1997, I claimed that Washington state wines were the best in the world. I am not ashamed of that claim, though I was widely ridiculed then. In the last decade, the Wines from Washington have garnered more awards and ratings above 90 points than any other region on the globe.
While to a large part of the nation, we in North Idaho … (0 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: SAND CREEK CLEAN UP SET FOR APRIL 16: Sandpoint Blog - 04/04/11 03:19 PM
Volunteers sought to help spruce up waterfront
The Downtown Sandpoint Business Association and Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper are teaming up this spring to remove trash from the shoreline along Sand Creek in downtown Sandpoint during the annual Sand Creek Clean Up on April 16, 2011.
A winter's worth of trash has accumulated along Sand Creek. That litter is unsightly and could also impact the ecosystem and wildlife in the creek and Lake Pend Oreille. The Sand Creek Clean Up aims to remove this garbage so it does not negatively impact Lake Pend Oreille or the beauty of the spring and summer … (0 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: Life in Sandpoint - A Video Commentary: Sandpoint Real Estate Blog - 03/15/11 11:57 AM
This last two weeks Sandpoint, Idaho had lots going on. The Follies wowed audiences, like usual. I had the good fortune to perform a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis with Lars Larson. (See the video here, and understand, it is not for the easily offended.) The event raises close to $25,000 for local charities. Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters had an event at the roastery last Saturday. My friend Ray Allen performed at the Pend d'Oreille Winery, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort had fresh powder, and town was kickin'.
My company, Tomlinson Sandpoint Sotheby's International Realty, had its annual meeting, and … (1 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: St. Patrick's Day - A Great Celebration: Sandpoint Blog - 03/14/11 01:17 PM

In a quick search for St. Patrick's Day parades on the www.st-patricks-day.com website, I noted that there were none in North Idaho. What! I may not be remembering my history well, but don't the Irish have this thing for potatoes? Where are the best potatoes from? It just seems a natural that with both places beginning with the letter "I" and having this potato connection, seems we in Idaho should have something going on for St. Paddy's Day. So, okay, there are some things going on down south in Boise and Treasure Valley, and the Idaho potato commission has some … (2 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: An interview with Chix in the Kitchen and pics of the Beer Chili Cook-off at Laughing Dog: Sandpoint Blog - 02/23/11 05:01 PM
Last year I interviewed Lisa Richards who started a cool group called Chix in the Kitchen. Laughing Dog Brewing was just about to have their grand opening at the new digs at 1109 Fontaine Drive and the Chix were having a Beer Chili Cook-off there.
The day before the new tasting room had been packed with well-wishers and beer tasters. The hope was to have a repeat success. We talked about the event, and how Chix had evolved over the last year. Below you can read a little of that interview.
The Chix invited well-known chef Gabe Cruz and myself to … (1 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: "Puppy Love" by Teresa Pesce, a romantic comedy: Sandpoint Blog - 02/23/11 04:22 PM
I interviewed the cast of "Puppy Love" on my radio show last week. First let me tell you these are the funniest troup to ever be on my show. There, I said it. Add to that the foible that I called the award-winning author Penny several times, even though her name is Teresa Pesce.
Bottom line is, if they are that funny just ad libbing and talking off-the-cuff on a radio show, the play must be hilarious.
Below is the info taken from the Panida Theater's website:

The entrance to Coldwater Creek Wine Bar
In an interview with Dave Vermeer we talked about Coldwater Creek Wine Bar last Tuesday on my radio show, North Idaho Arts & Adventure. At one time we had just two wine bars in town, Coldwater Creek and the Pend Oreille Winery. Obviously, you could only get the wines produced by the winery at their bar, and the Coldwater Creek Wine Bar was beautiful, in the Cedar Street Bridge overlooking Sand Creek. It came replete with over-stuffed leather couches and giant timbers. When the … (2 comments)

what to do in sandpoint: Bio-Luminesce Fire Dancers perform at Pend d'Oreille Winery for Sandpoint Winter Carnival: Sandpoint Blog - 01/14/11 11:39 PM
The Bio-Luminesce Firedancers have performed for the last five years at the Sandpoint Winter Carnival. They have always performed in the courtyard at Pend d'Oreille Winery. However, in the last two years they have attracted a crowd upwards of 200 people, so this year, the street was closed off. I was there tonight, and though I estimate there weren't more people this year, there were as many as previous years, and we all had a better view and more room. The winery was packed, the rain held off, and it was a good time had by all.
Here is a cool … (0 comments)

Babs' Pizzeria in Sandpoint, Idaho
Last Thursday I interviewed Babs from Babs' Pizzeria on my show Speak Up North Idaho on KSPT and KBFI as part of the North Idaho Talk Radio Network.
Babs is participating in Dine Around Sandpoint, and was voted Best Pizzeria in Bonner County in 2010.

I had a part-time job managing Dish Home Cooking last year, which was in the same complex as Babs. That's when I met this incredibly hard-working woman.
Babs related how her background is Sicilian, and New York-style pizza is part of her heritage. … (0 comments)
