VERO BEACH - 2009 has been a banner year for Ivo David.

The Vero Beach artist won first place in the Hibiscus Festival poster competition with his oil painting "Downtown Vero Beach." His "Centennial Fountain" oil was one of six winning entries in the Downtown Vero Beach banner art competition. Now David has his eyes on the poster contest for the city's 90th anniversary celebration Oct. 16.

His watercolor and tempera entry is titled "90th Anniversary, Progress in Vero Beach."

"It's how I see some of the advances the city has made, from the drawbridge over the lagoon to the modern Barber Bridge and the high-rise Village Spires," said David, 74, who is a native of Italy.

"The splendid richness of the sun's rays are generated by an orange, whose peel and segments form the number 90."

The rays and their reflection in the lagoon permit him to use his favorite color, yellow. "I call it ‘my signature color' because it has been a characteristic of my works from the beginning," he said.

"It gives me a sense of freedom and projects the theme of dream, juxtaposed with the reality represented by the secondary colors."

Like his other works, his anniversary painting contains a rich palette of colors and bold brush strokes that are traits of "The Fusionism, 1956" art movement, which he founded.

"It was a reaction against the distortions of surrealism. It's an elaboration of classicism, romanticism, impressionism and post-impressionism, and their combination in one unified style," he said.

A lifelong painter, David received his first art lesson from his father, also an artist. He graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Art in Naples, Italy, and had his first one-man show at the city's Galleria del Ponte.

David moved to Vero Beach from New Jersey in 2005.

"I love the beauty and tranquility here," he said. "Nothing is more rewarding than driving around and transmitting on canvas or paper my feelings of the area."

As you may or may not know, this is Pride Month.  This weekend culminates in the 40th Annual Pride Parade, celebrating the contributions and culture of the GLBT community.

This year the parade is dedicated to all those who were a part of the Stonewall riots in New York City with grand marshal Alexandra Billings.

LINCOLN PARK

You're seeing the promos.  You can walk right by the Biograph Theater in Lincoln Park all on your own.  Now you can buy the gun that is responsible for the death of John Dillinger. 

On July 28th the .38 caliber Colt Army Special revolver will be auctioned at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.  Due to City of Chicago laws, the actual gun will not be on the premises as it is illegal to have a handgun or automatic weapon within city limits.

OAK PARK

The Oak Park Rotary is just getting warmed up!  The Rotary is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

Rotarians like John Barclay (one of the earliest members who joined in 1962) and Telfer MacArthur (the first president of the club) have fond memories of their continued community service.

The club motto of "integrity and service above self" is well evidenced by the support of the various literacy programs, teen mentoring programs and humanitarian programs around the world.
