christa ross: The curse of vanilla homes - boring! - 11/23/10 03:51 PM
I've seen quite a number of vanilla homes lately, you may know what I am talking about. White walls, white molding, beige carpet, beige countertops, beige tile. Some of these homes are priced pretty high, but they leave so little impression on a buyer that they are easily forgotten. While I agree that you should not personalize your home so much that it won't appeal to most buyers I think it's equally important to give your home some personality. Your goal is to create an inviting, warm homey space that anyone can imagine themselves living in and yet so many (especially

christa ross: Get Ready for Higher Electric Bills Pennsylvania! - 09/28/10 06:51 PM
Coming soon to your mailbox, Higher Electric Bills! Many years in the making, Western Pennsylvania's energy market will be deregulated effective January 1, 2011. What this means to consumers remains to be seen but for the parts of the state that were deregulated earlier in the process it has meant increases between 10-40%, depending on who you ask. Previously, energy was generated by just a handful of companies that had a monopoly on our energy. In an effort to create a competitive marketplace the state decided back in 1996 to deregulate the PA energy market. In an effort to soften the

christa ross: Existing Home Sales Fall, But Prices Rise - 01/29/10 02:37 PM
Existing-home sales fell as expected in December after first-time buyers rushed to complete deals during the months leading up to the original November deadline for the tax credit. However, prices rose from December 2008 and annual sales improved in 2009, according to the National Association of REALTORS® For the past several years there has been a lot of talk about where the "bottom" of the market is. In my interpretation, it may have been in November. This week NAR published data, quoted above, that shows prices beginning to rise. It is true that activity went down in December, but I personally

christa ross: The Perfect Storm - 01/26/10 09:27 AM
Can you feel the winds blowing? The Perfect Real Estate Storm is coming Prices are Low - Sellers have had to drop their prices over the last year, making the time right for buyers. Interest Rates are Low - Matter of fact, they can't be much lower and most experts agree that as the economy shows signs of life, the rates will start to creep up. The Tax Credit was Expanded - $8,000 for first-timers, $6,500 for those that owned for at least 3 of the last 5 years, for homes under contract between now and April 30th and closed by

christa ross: URA-Sponsored Homes Add Up to Big Savings for City Buyers - 01/12/10 04:49 PM
If you are looking for a great value on a home in the city, consider a URA-sponsored house. If you are not familiar with the URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority), it is the City of Pittsburgh's economic development agency. Its goals are to create jobs, increase the city's tax base, and improve the vitality of businesses, neighborhoods, and the City's livability as a whole. One of their more popular programs is the Neighborhood Housing Program, which sponsors the construction or rehabilitation of single family homes and then supplies interest-free, deferred, second mortgage financing to qualified buyers. The homes are built in neighborhoods
