A much lamented statistic that has plagued Pittsburgh for many years may be finally turning around in our favor. The migration out of the city by young adults in their mid-20s has for the first time in many years turned in our favor with Pittsburgh actually seeing a .30 increase in retention for the 2007-2009 period as reported in a recent study from the Brookings Institution by researcher William Frey. The deadline to file for an Act 1 Homestead exemption for your home is coming up on March 1. This reduction is funded by the tax on gaming revenue in Pennsylvania. It is available to all homeowners for their primary residence. Allegheny County residents can find out if their home is registered for the exemption by calling the Allegheny County Assessments Office at 412-350-4600 or check the county's online real estate website. There's an old joke here in Pittsburgh that when the world ends we'll still have 7 years left. I've even heard people talk about how the recession really hasn't hit Pittsburgh yet. I don't agree. In my opinion, Pittsburgh has been able to weather the downturn because it is a stable, down-to-earth city that already went through the bad times. It was able to diversify it's economy and attract new investment. Like the rest of the country we saw a decline in home prices but nothing like the huge drops that were happening in other areas, just a few percentage points. … (2 comments)
