Things to do in Nanaimo in July & August

I love living in Nanaimo for many reasons; one of them being all of the choices I have in how I wish to spend my leisure time.  With the summer months upon us we have a cornucopia of events, festivals and activities to choose from.

If you enjoy being out on the water you can participate or watch the Save-on-Foods Dragon Boat Festival July 5^th-7^th  or The Silly Boat Regatta – Sunday July 21, The Nanaimo Marine Festival-July 26-28 and of course the world famous Bathtub Race on July 28^th.

Silly Boat Regatta-

The race takes place Sunday July 21 at Maffeo Sutton Park.  Boat building begins at 8:00 am and activities and games begin at 10:00 with the race starting at 1:00 and finals at 2:30.  All proceeds are given to the Nanaimo Child Development Centre.

The Bathtub Race - Sunday July 28

Nanaimo is known as the bathtubbing capital of the World.  Entrants to the race come from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the U.S.

At 11:00 am on Sunday the bathtubbers will race out of Nanaimo Harbour, head to Schooner Cove in Nanoose and circle the Winchelsea Islands.  The race ends back at Departure Bay Beach where the racers park their bath tubs and race up the beach and ring a bell.  The best vantage point to watch the racers is on Departure Bay beach or on the beach at Stephenson Point.

Some other fun ideas:

VIEX -August 16-19between 9am-9pm: “From Pioneer Days to Modern Ways" celebrates the VIEX as the largest and oldest event in the community for 118 years. Some of the activities and events you can expect to see are horse shows, silent auction, livestock displays, a Kid’s Zone, goat milking demonstrations, Jack Russell terrier races, as well as lively tribute bands.  I f you get bored with any of that you can enjoy some lively fun on the rides.  This year there will be a new midway - Shooting Star Amusements.

The Bowen Road Farmers' Market: A fun & vibrant market with wonderful locally grown produce. The market also feature musicians and vendors selling products and produce that have been grown within an 80 km radius 

Cedar Yellowpoint Artisans Tour:  If you would like to enjoy a day in the country take the summer Cedar Yellowpoint Artisans tour.  You can visit their website to download a map of the tour at www.cyartisans.com.  With the map in hand you can tour artists’ studios, farms or shop for fresh produce or eat in a local restaurant.
