orlando property taxes: Central Florida tax assessed values way down for 2009 - 05/29/09 10:49 AM
If you think your local city and county governments and school boards had it tough last year, just wait until 2009. According to a story in yesterday's Orlando Sentinel, tax values in Orange County, Florida are down 10.5% since last year with some segments down significantly more - homesteads 26%, condos 33%, and condo conversions 60%. I am actually surprised that the total average is only 10.5% in a year. You almost have to wonder where they got that number from because everything I am seeing is down 20-25% unless it is in the mid to high-end established neighborhoods like College

orlando property taxes: City of Orlando passes its biggest tax increase in modern history - 09/17/08 07:33 AM
In a 5-2 vote on Monday, the Orlando city commission approved the largest tax increase in modern Orlando history. Fox 35 News story (Yes, I am one of the people holding the picket signs.) Orlando Sentinel article I along with many fellow investors and landlords from Central Florida Realty Investors tried to stop the increase. Our local association of Realtors also spoke out strongly against it. But the city commission apparently already had its mind made up because it took them about 60 seconds to vote on the budget with zero discussion on behalf of any of the commissioners. If you own property

orlando property taxes: Orlando Sentinel article - property tax budget hearings 9/8 and 9/15 - 09/07/08 05:35 PM
If you haven't read it already, last week I mailed An open letter to Orlando Mayor Dyer and all Orlando City Commissioners in to the Mayor and all Orlando City Commissioners. I also included with my letter a teabag symbolic of the Boston Tea Party when overburdened taxpayers revolted against yet another government tax. The only commissioner that did not receive a teabag from me was Commissioner Phil Diamond who is to be applauded for his stance against raising the Orlando millage rate. The Orlando Sentinel also gave me a little press in today's newspaper. Pretty cool. This article is about the upcoming 2008 Orlando budget hearings tomorrow

orlando property taxes: An open letter to Orlando Mayor Dyer and all Orlando City Commissioners - 08/31/08 11:19 AM
To Mayor Dyer and all Orlando City Commissioners: (The only exception is Commissioner Phil Diamond who is the lone commissioner that is against raising millage rates. Good for him! A first-class letter similar to this was sent to the Mayor and all City Commissioners today.) I wanted to voice my strong opposition to the Orlando city commission considering raising the property tax millage rate. The city's budget was $604 million just 4 years ago and in the $400 million range just 8 years ago. Now the city's proposed budget is $919 million for 2008-2009 which is up from $820 million just last year. While

orlando property taxes: The City of Orlando is broke and needs to raise your property taxes - think again, waste is everywhere - 08/09/08 10:20 AM
I love this photo because it speaks volumes. It is a vehicle with OUC logos on it. OUC stands for the Orlando Utilities Commission which is the electric company owned by the City of Orlando which generates significant income for the city. Where is this photo taken? In the OUC parking lot in downtown Orlando, nope. At a power substation in East Orlando, think again. This photo was taken at a home located in Altamonte Springs just around the corner from my office. 634 Parkwood Drive, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714 to be exact. Someone is parking it there every single night.

orlando property taxes: Florida's economy is struggling, so what is the answer? Raise taxes everywhere - let the people eat cake - 07/26/08 08:31 PM
With the real estate market struggling, revenues from property taxes are down. Sales taxes are down, documentary stamp collections are down, assessed values have decreased on properties, Amendment 1 did some small cuts to property taxes too. On top of this expenses have gone up due to inflation, fuel prices have increased, prices in general have gone way up. So what is the logical thing for cities to do? Cut the fat out of their budgets? No way. Live within their means? I don't think so. Reduce unnecessary expenses? Give me a break. The logical thing to do is raise your taxes. How else

orlando property taxes: City of Orlando meeting for property tax hike proposal - 07/19/08 07:33 AM
I have blogged extensively regarding the property tax issue and quite recently about the City of Orlando and its proposal to raise property taxes. So I won't bore you to death with another rant on the issue. I will let you know where you can rant for yourself though. The City of Orlando may be making some decisions at the next council meeting this Monday 7/21/08 at 2:00 p.m. at City Hall. The proposal is to raise the millage rate by one whole point. That is $100 in additional taxes for every $100,000 in value. If you are a property owner in the City of

orlando property taxes: City of Orlando might be raising your property taxes - let's analyze shall we - 07/16/08 04:20 PM
The City of Orlando like so many other local governments in Florida right now is having budget problems. The revenues coming in just aren't meeting their expenses. The city officials blame the shortfall on Amendment 1 that was overwhelmingly passed by voters back in January. Liberal Democrats like the Mayor Buddy Dyer and Commissioner Patty Sheehan want to scare us all to death by claiming fire and police services will get slashed to the bone. I almost wonder how the city operated a few years ago on the meager little budgets they had at that time. Patty Sheehan apparently thinks that when your
