Almost all of Albany students beat the state average on the latest round of reading and science assessment tests administered by the Oregon Department of Education. However, many slipped below in math.
Students taking the 10th-grade math test outscored the state for the second year in a row. For that test, 58.9 percent of Albany students met or exceeded state standards, compared with 52.2 percent of students statewide.
Results of the 2007-08 assessment tests in reading, mathematics, writing and science can be viewed at the state's website, www.ode.state.or.us.
All Albany students topped the state in science. In reading, only sixth-graders were below, with 69.7 percent making the grade versus the state's average of 73.3 percent.
In math, students in grades 4, 5, 6 and 8 scored just below the state average. In writing, 34.9 percent of seventh graders met the standard compared with 49.2 percent statewide.
The state tests grades 3 through 8 and grade 10 in reading and math, grades 5, 8 and 10 in science. Grades 4, 7 and 10 are tested in writing.
Can these results be trusted? Educators warn that the results can't accurately be compared to results from students in prior years.
Tests are given annually, but scores and standards were realigned in 2006 and tests in 2006, 2007 and 2008 were not identically administered.
