Manalapan Township 2012 Photo Contest - "An Appreciation of Where I Live"

The Township of Manalapan is pleased to announce the holding of its 4th annual photo contest.The 2012 theme is “Manalapan – An Appreciation of Where I Live” – a repeat of the first photo contest.The Contest will be looking for pictures of any scene, object, event, people or activity that occurs in Manalapan that inspires an appreciation of residing in the town.Each year’s contest has been very successful as over 160 photos have been submitted in the first 3 years.

“We encourage all Manalapan residents to consider submitting a photo.Whether it came from a walk in one of the parks, a beautiful surprise in a backyard or the capture of a moment of people enjoying themselves at a Manalapan event, any photo that brings out the positive qualities of the Town are welcome. We want to make it as difficult as possible on our Judges.” said Mayor Susan Cohen.“I am appreciative of the Manalapan Arts Council assuming the stewardship of the contest again this year and want to personally thank its leadership and in particular Barbara Miller for agreeing to co-chair the project.I still look at the photos from the 2011 contest which are displayed in our Town Hall Court Room and am so impressed with the talents of this community.”

The contest is open to all Manalapan residents.Township residents can only enter one photo.Photographs must include a brief description (25 words or less) and the location/event of the photo. Awards will be given in the following categories:<12 years old, 12-17 years of age and adult (18 years of age and over).All photos will be on display at the Manalapan Under the Stars community event on June 16, 2012 where a special “Peoples Choice” award will be given to the photograph that garners the most votes that day from the visiting and judging public.

Photographs must be received by 4:30 p.m. on May 8, 2012.Photographs can be submitted by email to photocontest@mtnj.org (file must be less than 1.5mb) or dropped off at the Manalapan Township Health Department (photographic prints must not be larger than 5” x 7”).The full set of rules and the submission form are available online at the Township website – www.mtnj.org – or at the Manalapan Township Health Department.Please remember a submission form must accompany the photograph.Forms are also available on the Township web site or at the Manalapan Township Health Department.

Dog and Cat Licensing

The Health Department of Manalapan Township is presently licensing all dogs and cats.

2011 licenses expired January 31^st so all pets must be relicensed for 2012.

An important reminder – the grace period to re-license animals before a late fee is imposed ends on February 29^th.

The Township will be fulfilling its bi-annual Animal Census obligation to look for unlicensed animals. This Census is expected to start before the end of February. So don’t delay!!

Manalapan Englishtown Preschool Program

Program open to 4-year-olds

The Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District will be offering an Integrated Preschool Program at the John I. Dawes Early Learning Center, Gordons Corner Road, Manalapan, which will be open to 4-year-old children who live in Manalapan and Englishtown.

Classes will be taught by certified teachers and supported by a paraprofessional aide. The program which will be aligned with the New Jersey State Department of Education's Preschool Teaching and Learning Expectations will provide an inclusive educational environment for preschool children, according to information provided by the school district.

Typically developing children and special needs children will be included in the program. The class will run from 9:50 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. daily for the length of the 2009-10 school year.

The program will accommodate a total of 16 students. Eight nondisabled students will be selected for the program through a lottery drawing should the number of applicants exceed the number of openings. Tuition for the school year will be $3,500. Transportation to the program is the responsibility of the parents/guardians.

Parents/guardians who are interested in having their child attend this program should submit a letter by Aug. 4 with their child's name, birth date, address and telephone number to Frank J. Sein, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Manalapan-Englishtown Regional Schools, 36 Gordons Corner Road, Manalapan, NJ 07726.

DocuSign affords me three extra hours a week

If using DocuSign affords me three extra hours a week (and I don’t see how it won’t) then I would spend the time with my family and friends. In the real estate business we neglect the people we love too often. We work weekends when they are home. When I take off a half day on Wednesday they are working. I would add the 3 hours to Saturday afternoon so that I can still show homes early in the day but still have time for my family.

It is already winter and I never really got to set up my deck for last summer. I never even had a barbeque or ate dinner outside. This job takes over every spare moment of your life. When you are not with clients, you are preparing for or following up with them. When not with clients, we are staring at the computer!

We only seem to see friends and family when we are invited for the obligatory holiday or birthday. It would be nice to see them for an impromptu get together or just go to the movies. I could also use it to take my dog on longer walks. I always seem to rush him when he just wants to sniff and check out the neighborhood.

The Freehold Branch of AAUW will award two $2000.00 scholarships, the Lew Williams Scholarship and the Leila Sulkes Scholarship for the academic year 2012-2013.

Scholarship Applicant Qualifications

• Women 25 years of age or older

• Resident of the following towns: Colts Neck, Englishtown, Farmingdale, Freehold Boro, Freehold Township, Howell, Manalapan, Marlboro, Morganville

• Enrolled in a bachelor's degree program having completed a minimum of 60 credits or enrolled in a graduate degree program having completed a minimum of six credits

• Must have maintained a minimum GPA of "B"

• Will be enrolled in the school year 2012-2013

The American Association of University Women’s Freehold Branch is accepting book donations for its 2012 used-book sale. All books, with the exception of Reader’s digest condensed books and textbooks, can be dropped off between 10:00 am and noon on Tuesday mornings at the Freehold Savings Bank, 65 W. American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a nationwide network of more than 100,000 members and donors, 1,000 branches, and 500 college/university institution partners.

This branch unites college women in the area for work on the educational, civic and social problems of the community; aids promising women students by providing opportunities for higher education and research; and cooperates in the programs of the AAUW.

The sale, which will take place June, 2012, is their major fundraiser and provides the means with which they are able to offer local scholarships and contribute to the National organization’s educational and Legal Advocacy funds.

Annual Manalapan Jersey Cares for Coats Drive - 2011

Make this a Warmer Winter for Neighbors in Need!!

The goal of the 16th Annual Jersey Cares Coat Drive is to collect and distribute 50,000 “gently used” winter coats to at-risk men, women, children and infants.

Over the past fifteen years, Jersey Cares has collected, sorted and distributed thousands of winter coats to New Jersey residents in need through this program.

Companies, churches, police stations, schools and other organizations collect coats throughout the drive.

Volunteers then sort the donated coats and bag them for pick-up. Agency recipients schedule their pick-up and distribute the coats to those in need.

If you have a coat to donate, bring it between November 1^st through December 1th to Manalapan Township Town Hall. The hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm.

Alternatively, I am happy to pick up any coats from Manalapan Residents if you can't get over there. Please call me at 732-580-7893 to arrange a date for pickup.

Manalapan Leaf Collection

MANALAPAN LEAF RECYCLING

Manalapan will continue with the expanded leaf collection program this fall. Leaves will be collected on November 7, 14, 21, 28, December 5, 12, 19, 27, 2011.

All leaves must be placed in biodegradable compost bags.

These bags can be purchased at the Public Works Department on Mondays – Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The bags are sold in bundles of 5 for a cost of $2.00.

You can also purchase these bags from local retailers.

NO leaves will be collected that are not in these biodegradable bags.

Bagged leaves containing twigs, grass, brush, weeds or other debris will not be collected.

Please place bagged leaves at the curb, not in the street, on the first day of each scheduled collection to insure you will not miss any of the collections.

Leaves in biodegradable bags can be brought to the Public Works yard throughout the year.

Manalapan Township Curfew

Township officials are asking for parents’ cooperation for Mischief Night (Oct. 30) and Halloween (Oct. 31)

A curfew for people under the age of 18 will be in place in Manalapan this week.

9 p.m. Oct. 30 to 6 a.m. Oct. 31.

9 p.m. Oct. 31 to 6 a.m. Nov. 1.

The only exceptions during those times for individuals under the age of 18 are for people returning from work, night school, fraternity or church or school meetings, or en route to or returning from a doctor’s or dentist’s office where treatment has been rendered or is to be rendered by the doctor or dentist, or is accompanied by his or her guardian over the age of 18.

During the times and dates mentioned above, no one over the age of 18 shall wear “any appliance for the purpose of covering any portion or part of his or her face, commonly known as a mask or partial mask in any public place, public street, or public property in the township.”

My neighbor in Marlboro is not cutting his grass

When your Marlboro, NJ neighbor is not mowing his lawn and it is driving you crazy the township can help.

Call the Zoning Office (732-617-7225) and report the address. A letter will be sent to the homeowner explaining the grass ordinance and giving them ten (10) days to cut the grass. If after ten (10) days, the grass has not been cut, a Notice of Violation will be sent. Ten (10) days will be given for the grass to be cut. If at this time, the problem has not been addressed, either a Summons can be issued or a Notice to Abate an unsafe condition can be sent. Failure to comply with a Notice to Abate can result in the Township cutting the grass or the Township hiring an outside contractor to cut the grass. A lien will be put against the property to cover the cost of cutting.

Please bear in mind that properties where the grass is not being cut are typically in foreclosure and the bank holding the mortgage must be identified and contacted in order to get the grass cut.

Monmouth County Library Logo Contest

Calling all young artists! Monmouth County Library seeks new logo

MANALAPAN -- Chairperson of the Monmouth County Library Commission Renee B. Swartz is pleased to announce that the Commission has authorized a contest for a new design for its logo. The aim is to emphasize the added dimension of the Library’s services that are part of the growing dynamic of the Monmouth County Library System.

“Not only is the Library a place to dream, a place to learn and a place to realize one’s potential, but the Library has also become everyone’s corner store of the mind,” Swartz said. “These are the concepts we would like to see reflected in our new logo.”

The logo contest will be open to all Monmouth County students, ages 14 to 22. The winning artist will receive a $500 prize. The prize money will be donated by the Friends of the Monmouth County Library.

“This is a very exciting time for the Library System. We have taken on new challenges and have been very successful in offering a wide range of services and programs for the residents of Monmouth County,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Library. “So it’s only fitting that we open the competition to our very talented young residents to create a new symbol for the Library.”

The new logo will be used on the Library webpage, letterhead, fliers and other Library documents.

The contest begins June 1 and will run through the summer. Deadline for submissions will be September 30. The logo entries will be judged by the Library Commissioners, and one winner only will be chosen.

Manalapan Township On-Line Tax Payments

Manalapan Township is pleased to announce for the convenience of the residents, property taxes may now be viewed and paid on-line 24 hours a day 7 days a week. With the new Web Inquiry and Payment Portal (WIPP) program residents can make payments by credit card, debit card, or check. Fees are associated with the on-line payments to avoid increases to the municipal budget. It is important to note that the fees retained are paid to the service provider and are not paid to or shared with the Township.

To access the WIPP program, visit Manalapan Township’s website at www.mtnj.org and look under Community News. Just follow the links. The program is very user friendly.

A computer will soon be available in town hall for residents without access to a computer at home. The new program is another convenient option for residents to pay property taxes. Among others include, a drop box in town hall that is open from 7am to 8pm Monday through Friday, and 7am to 3pm on Saturday.

The WIPP program will also allow access to realtors, banks, lawyers and mortgage companies to check information such as assessment of properties and whether there are any outstanding back taxes due.

The Township’s tax bills were mailed out August 13, 2011. The grace period will be extended to September 9^th. All payments received after that date will incur interest calculated back to 8/1/11 in accordance with State Statues and Township Resolution.

Manalapan Township Property Taxes Delayed

Manalapan Property Taxes Delayed: Due to the school funding showdown that occurred at the state level, the state was late in sending out property tax certifications this year. The property taxes will be sent out on Aug. 15, and the new deadline is Sept. 8. There is no ten day grace period with this new deadline; therefore, if you do not pay your property taxes by Sept. 8 you will be charged interest back to Aug. 1.

MTTN provides look at life in Manalapan

Relying solely on volunteers the Manalapan Township Television Network (MTTN) has built a reputation as a place to turn to for community information and entertainment.

MTTN, which is the township’s municipal access channel, airs on Cablevision channel 77 and Verizon FIOS channel 42.

The operation of the municipal access channel is overseen by the Cable Television Advisory Committee, the members of which are appointed by the Township Committee.

Upon written request and approval, MTTN may attend recognized not-for-profit community functions in Manalapan, schedule permitting. Additionally, MTTN offers no-cost bulletin board postings for not-for profit organizations and government entities that are aired throughout the day.
