economy: Still Made in America - 07/07/12 04:58 AM
MADE IN AMERICA. With the exception of many of us, it is tough to find something that can wear that label these days. As a result, it remains difficult finding a manufacturing job in America.
According to an interesting article posted on MSNBC, the United States lost one third of its manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2010. A third of 'em.
Some of the jobs just went away as companies went out of business. But a large number moved somewhere where labor costs were less. Places like China, India and Central and South America.
However, according to MSNBC's article, the pressures that … (1 comments)

economy: Booming or Just Building - Missoula is on the Move - 06/18/12 12:00 AM
I'M NOT SURE if downtown Missoula is booming, but it sure is building. Construction is all around the downtown area with investors betting that owning space in Missoula is going to pay off.
In the past it has proven to be a safe bet. Our community has a long history of supporting a vibrant downtown area. So when buildings began closing their doors several years ago, the question was asked: "What are we to do about it?"
Apparently that question has been answered. Investors are doubling down on downtown - and I'm just one of the Missoula residents thinking their wagers will … (0 comments)

economy: At Real Estate Pipeline, reviews get our attention - 05/23/12 02:00 AM
AT REAL ESTATE Pipeline, reviews and comments on our blogs are watched carefully. After all, the point of blogging is to receive responses, which can be the beginning of an on-line relationship that can serve everyone well.
So I read with interest the comments on a blog I posted about the inequity of wealth seen here in the United States. For the record, arguing for fairness, or pointing our how a few manipulate the markets for great profits, is not the same as arguing for socialism or communism.
Still, thanks for the comments. Much of the fun with blogging comes from the comments and … (0 comments)

economy: There's Plenty of Money - Too Few Just Have too Much of It - 05/20/12 10:55 PM

DOES ANYONE ELSE hear that sucking sound?
As I listened to pundits debate on the Sunday morning TV talk shows about how to jump start the stumbling economy, I kept hearing the sound of something valuable being sucked out of the system: money.
Both Republicans and Democrats appear to be ignoring this background sound, instead preferring to argue about where to cut and how best to tighten our belts.
I don't know about you, but my belt already feels tight enough. And it seems like every time I read the news, I am reminded that there appears to be plenty of money to go … (7 comments)

economy: Bad Banking Apparently Didn't Stop in 2008. - 05/11/12 12:06 AM
YOU'D THINK they would have known better.
JPMorgan, the nation's largest bank, announced this week it recently lost at least $2 billion by investing in hedge funds. The bank apparently was trying to hedge its investments with the same sort of shaky investment strategies that got us all in this financial mess several years ago.
In a case of deja vu all over again, officials with the bank said a complex hedging strategy backfired and led to the losses over a six-week period. Other losses may still be coming and other banks also might be preparing to release their own, similar, statements.
As hedge … (8 comments)

economy: Is Canada Going Down the Same Road that led to U.S. Recession? - 03/18/12 11:03 PM
Learn from the mistakes of others - you can never live long enough to make them all yourself. John Luther

RATHER THAN LEARNING from a neighbor's mistake, Canada appears to be making some of the same blunders the United States still tries to recover from. Overvalued housing and unsustainable consumer debt have some Canadians worried their country may soon have a recession of its own to deal with.
Similar practices caused the U.S. housing market and its broader economy to begin collapsing in 2006. It remains easy to see the consequences of such practices. Here in the United States, the price of … (1 comments)

economy: Cashing In On the Beauty - 03/11/12 11:21 PM
As a resident of Montana, I don't often need to be reminded of the importance of the natural beauty surrounding those of us living here. But a study just released illustrates just how important a pretty view can be for our economy.
Apparently, we can, at least to some extent, quantify in dollars and cents the value of a spectacular view.
According to a Michigan State University researcher, visitors to Glacier National Park in northwest Montana spend more than $100 million a year in the communities surrounding it. That spending supports nearly 1,700 jobs that are sorely needed in struggling communities like … (4 comments)

economy: 13,000 - No Big Deal. Wake Me When the Dow Passes 14,000 - 02/27/12 03:55 AM
"Memory is deceptive because it is colored by today's events." Albert Einstein.

THERE IS A LOT of chatter today about the Dow Jone Industrial Average climbing back above 13,000 as it briefly did last week. For many, it is a sign the economy is coming back, that good times are returning.
After all, times have been tough. But what we need to remember is that the last time 13,000 was a milestone, the Dow was dropping through it, not climbing above it. The stock market is graphic proof that what goes up can indeed come back down.
So, perhaps again reaching 13,000 is reason to … (2 comments)

economy: Candidates focusing on the wrong house - 02/01/12 01:09 AM

The only house candidates appear to be concerned with
Working in the real estate industry and being a political junkie, I have been watching the recent debates and primaries with much interest. During the most recent debates in Florida I thought where better for the candidates to discuss their plans for jumpstarting the ailing real estate industry? For the most part, Republican candidates have remained quiet on the issue.
Now, with the Florida debate and election over, the quiet remains. In the most recent debate, the candidates got their chance to address the issue when a member of the audience asked about how they … (3 comments)
