A family experienced symptoms of poor health and asked HABITEC Home and Building Inspections, LLC, to assess for mold and complete a home inspection.  This is what we found behind the kitchen refrigerator.  This area tested positive for stachybotrys, a highly toxic mold.  The family has since moved out of the house.

Prayers:  For those of you who know someone who lost their lives or were injured in this recent storm damage please accept our condolences and know that our prayers are with you at this time.
Damage Control:  When these major storm damage events come through there is much to be done to stabilize the situation if your home or the homes and buildings of neighbors, friends and relatives are damaged.  One of the most likely damages is to the roof.  It is critical to put in place temporary systems to prevent water from entering the building any more than already has.  Then take … (1 comments)

mold: Mold Assessment Services - For or Against? - 02/04/08 08:49 PM
Some have suggested that mold services including testing and assessments are not necessary.  I disagree and here is why.
First let me say that mold services are not for everybody.  At HABITEC Home and Building Inspections, LLC, we have undergone training at two agencies and I can say that this is a complicated subject and a very serious service to offer.  It is not unreasonable for some to go through the training and find that they simply do not understand the material.  If you are poorly trained, or you just cannot understand the information, then you will not be able to offer a quality … (2 comments)

mold: Question: Can mold exist on a frozen surface? - 01/24/08 03:57 PM
Answer:  Yes!  According to MoldREPORT, one mold type, cladosporium, is a genus that contains some species that can grow at temperatures near or below freezing.  "These species can be found on refrigerated foodstuffs and even frozen meat."  This information can be important if you suspect mold presence in your building but you are unable to identify the mold source or location.

mold: Question: How Long Should a Home Inspection Take? - 01/18/08 12:11 PM
Answer:  A well conducted Home Inspection should take approximately 1 hour per thousand square feet.  This time can vary depending on what the Home Inspector is asked to do.  If a Home Inspector is also contracted to complete a radon test, mold evaluation or property inspection then the total time at the site will increase.
Older homes take longer than newer homes because of the effects of aging and the tendencies of home owners to modify homes over time.  Occupied homes take longer to inspect than vacant homes.  A crawl space generally takes longer to inspect than a basement or a … (12 comments)

mold: Question: How much should a Home Inspection Cost? - 01/18/08 12:01 PM
Answer:  The cost of a Home Inspection varies depending on several issues.  The size of the home, the age, the foundation and the complexity all can factor in to the cost of a Home Inspection.
Some Home Inspectors offer a variety of services in addition to the basic Home Inspection.  These can include a Property Inspection, Environmental Services (mold, radon, water quality, lead in paint, asbestos, etc.), expert testimony and coordination for estimates to repair or improve.  These services will be charged in addition to the cost of  basic Home Inspection.

mold: Home Inspector Advise: A Story About Radon (January is National Radon Action Month) - 01/06/08 03:32 PM

A STORY ABOUT RADON
By Richard Acree
President
HABITEC Home and Building Inspections, LLC
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated January is the National Radon Action Month.  This is a story about radon that everyone should read.  First a brief review.
Radon is an odorless and invisible radioactive gas that is produced from the natural breakdown of the uranium found in most rocks and soils.  As the breakdown occurs, radon emits atomic particles into the air we breathe.
Once inhaled, these particles can be deposited in our lungs.  The energy associated with these particles can alter cell DNA, thus increasing the risk of lung cancer.  … (0 comments)
