Nashville Home Inspection - What's Wrong With This Picture?
HINT:  Hairy wood is rarely a good thing.

ANSWER:  Everything!  What you are looking at is a piece of wood that supports a porch.  So you are looking from below the porch and the grey material at the bottom of the picture is the concrete foundation wall.  What you are also looking at is some white fungal growth (that's the nicest way I can describe it) in different forms.  There is the white powdery stuff near the top of the wood, then there is the creepy angle-hair stuff hanging down from … (0 comments)

mold assessment: Tennessee Mold Assessment - What's That Black Stuff on the Garage Wall? 9.6.10 - 09/06/10 08:51 PM
Tennessee Mold Assessments completed by HABITEC Home and Building Inspections, LLC, involve at first a mold survey (ie. inspection) looking for red flags that provide an indication of mold in the building.  One of the red flags is what we call mold-like material.  Foreign material that looks suspiciously like mold.  Look at the pic below.  Do you see any mold-like material that would qualify as a red flag?

The problems come when the owner, an individual who has moved already, or a bank, thinks it is a good idea to turn the HVAC off to save money on utilities.  WRONG!  The reason is humidity.  Especially in the warmer summer months.  Remember a primary component of the air conditioning process is to dehumidify the air, versus cooling the air.  If you turn the A/C OFF during … (2 comments)

WARNING - IF YOU ARE SQUEEMISH, DO NOT LOOK AT THESE PICTURES!
What happens when a toilet leaks below the toilet?  Sure, that can be bad, but how bad can it be?  Brace for the following pics, because it can be real bad.
In the pics below the wood has rotted and mold-like material has developed, the metal support structure has rusted significantly, and stalactites of waste material have grown on the framing.  This is a situation out of control and in need of immediate repair.

Below is a closeup of the rotted wood and stalactite of bacteria.
